Comments:genetics - This was the hardest class i took this semester (and I took OCHEM). Lopez rushes material and way too much time is wasted in class on "group work" where we talk to our small group for 2 out of the 5 minutes he gives us. The LA's were also kind of a joke because it felt like they got just as confused as us. If you do take his class, go to office hours because they did slightly help.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2306 - guys seriously do not take him. I read these reviews and thought maybe he would be better for genetics, NO. He babbles the entire class about random stuff that is so non important and then goes so slow and then right before we have an exam he sends out chapter slides to learn for the exam (and the exam is based on the new slides he never taught). If you go to his office hours he is nice and helpful but there is usually such a long line that i do not have the time to wait yk. the quizzes are lowk hard too but its group quizzes so its easy and he usually gives you a 100. the exams are SO HARD for no reason. its all application and he genuinely tries to trick you with MC 6 options, select all the apply but only one right answer, and just insane reaches of questions. Knowing all the slides and content is not enough you have to do so much to earn an A. His voice is so monotone its so boring to listen in class. the final was easy and he does drop an exam so thats nice at least. he is a really sweet guy and genuinely does care for you as a student but that does not make up for how dumb the exams are and genuinely tricky. guys im being so fr take someone else. its possible to do good but you have to do sm extra work.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2306 - This is one of the most frustrating classes I’ve taken. Genetics is already difficult, but this professor makes it unnecessarily brutal. Exams are extremely long, confusing, and feel intentionally designed to trick students rather than test real understanding. The questions are often written like riddles, which adds stress instead of clarity. Lectures are poorly balanced—some topics are dragged out for far too long while others that are heavily tested are barely covered, leaving students to teach themselves major concepts. A large portion of class time is spent on group work, which feels like a waste when students are struggling to keep up with the material. Office hours are overcrowded and inefficient, with long wait times because so many students are confused. While the Connect homework assignments are tedious and time-consuming, they mostly function as grade padding rather than meaningful learning. Although he gives some points back on commonly missed exam questions, it does little to offset the overall difficulty. He seems like a nice person, but the course is disorganized, overly stressful, and far harder than it needs to be.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:2306 - These reviews don't reflect how Dr.Lopez truly is. He is the nicest person and explains everything super well. You'll do fine as long as you stick to the slides. I recommend going to his office hours if you don't understand a concept because he will ALWAYS help you. The exams are super fair. He loves questions about what happens when a mutation occurs, which is 100% what genetics is about. He gives a bunch of extra credit opportunities towards the end of the semester and will add points to the final exam. The final is also notoriously easy. If you're struggling with the exams during the semester, the final is easily the easiest one and replaces an exam. And those cookies he brings at the end of the semester is to DIE FOR.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2306 - I don't know what sophomore was praying on my downfall, or what freshman was trying to gaslight me into taking this class so they could get the good professor but watch out... As a professor who preaches his PhD being in genetics by sitting in this class you would never know. He teaches only off of his slides that he speeds through skipping half of the material that ends up being on the exam, but somehow manages to still be behind enough to have to post lecture videos 2 nights before an exam and the test ends up being half of the video. Or he runs through three chapters in one class period and expects us to know them completely for the exam the following day. He is truly a nice human, and workload wise this is a class you do not have to stress about so I wish I could encourage you to take him, but I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy. The exams are never reflective of his lecture (no matter how many times he says they are), the slides, the book, or any type of genetics information he gives you ever so I truly have no idea where the information for the exams comes from. After 2 semesters of taking him I still have no idea where he pulls the material from. This is the most discouraging, demoralizing, degrading class I have ever taken. If you have ever questioned your own mental capabilities, this class is a constant and vicious cycle of wondering if you are really that stupid, if you have a memory disorder, if you are meant to be a STEM major, or if he really just sucks at teaching and facilitating a class. I really wish I could write this review and tell you you've hit the jackpot, you have not. If you are trying to take this class, don't. If this is the only class open, waitlist for literally anyone else. If you have already picked this class, I recommend picking another class. If this is the class you have picked and have no other choice, there is nothing to do but pray. Stay strong soldiers, Chris Lopez's genetics 2306 is not for the weak.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:2306 - Overall he is a sweet guy. However his office hours there is always a line outside his office so you get very limited time. His exam has trick questions but it is all multiple choice. He usually gives back points for most missed questions. He isn't terrible. All quizzes were group quizzes and he gives us cookies during the final exam.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:2306 - I hesitate to start this review claiming Lopez is a nice guy because saying that may trick some of you into taking him, just like I was. Somehow last semester I had some people tell me that Lopez was so awesome for genetics because that's what he got his phd in, so I signed up for his course thinking he would be an awesome teacher and improve his teaching abilities from 1305...turns out I spent the entire semester essentially walking the prank because this class was my nightmare. His homework assignments truly aren't bad. A little obnoxious? Maybe, but they were never truly difficult. Honestly kinda mind numbing. They just weren't really helpful for learning any of the concepts for this class. Lopez has this monotone voice that kinda makes you wanna fall asleep and claw your eyes out at the same time and he just rambles rambles rambles about random things. Good luck following along with the slides because the slides he gives you aren't always accurate to the ones he is using to "teach". I put teach in quotes because I don't think I have yet learned anything from him. The things he talks about in class and says will be on the exam almost never are. AND the topics that he didn't have time to teach in class (he always runs out of time and missing an entire unit) he tells you the day before the exam that they WILL IN FACT still be on the exam and then bases 70% of the test on those things he didn't ever cover in class. And his test questions are such reaches. There's honestly no telling what will be on those exams and studying almost feels useless because no matter how hard you try prior, almost half of the test won't be familiar at all.... take minke.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - Started studying for the final at 12 AM and ended at 4 AM. Final was 9 AM. I slayed. U got this.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Took it during summer term in person. I have taken AP Bio before so this class is not hard for me to go through (most contents overlaps but this go more in depth in some concepts). His lectures is fun, filled with his little stories as he go through contents. He is always present in his office but he might have his earplugs in so that he wouldn't hear you knocking (I emailed him eventually). The reading for CODON is quite a lot as someone who reads slow but I liked how CODON has the study path function that helps you with practice problems that are harder than the exams for practice. He is super nice and cares about his students!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio 1 - Prof. Lopez was genuinely one of the best professors I had for Bio. I failed bio the first semester but did his class and passed with an 89. He only gave 2-3 readings before class that were max 10 questions, and only gave one homework a week, which would range from 15-25 questions. He also is very responsive to his emails and is good about office hours overall, I would recommend him to everyone. His only con is that he is very monotone when he speaks.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - Dr.Lopez is a great guy and you can tell he is passionate about teaching, however I don't recommend his class. The lectures are hard to pay attention to and I genuinely tried a different way to study every exam and still don't know how I was supposed to study. The exams are around 60 questions each and the information is way more in depth than he and the textbook go. Overall its not an impossible class just in my opinion way harder than it needed to be.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 1305 - I dislike biology with a PASSION. Genuinely one of my least favorite subjects. But, Dr. Lopez has some great qualities in a professor, and the workload for 1305 is not a lot with the work itself, but the studying you have to put into the course is insane. Not his fault, as most professors teach the same content at this level, but along with that, I was never a big fan of his exams. I found them too confusing, and never looked forward to taking one, as I knew I was always one wrong click away from failing. With that said, my grade is my own fault and not to reflect on his teaching abilities, because he does give resources to be able to fail. My one complaint from this course, though, has to be the groups. While I enjoyed the people that were in my group, sitting with the same people every class, having to work things out with the course helpers walking up and down the aisles was what I disliked most about the course. Other than that, overall it was okay.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:2306 - Dr. Lopez is a professor that genuinely cares about each singular one of his students and their performance. He is always available during office hours to discuss exams and possible topics that may come up in future exams. Practice Questions that are done during class are very similar to those that come in the exams so if you pay attention in class you will have strong preparation for the exam. Most importantly he knows how each one of his students are doing in the class which showcases how he truly wants his students to excel. If you complete the HW assignments before class, go to his office hours to discuss exams and clarify questions you should be able to score an excellent grade in the course considering he guides you in the correct direction for assignments. He has improved exponentially from previous years and is an instructor I trully appreciate and respect.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2306 - Dr. Lopez is an extremely nice professor that really cares about his students. He makes an effort to learn everyones names and is very understanding if something comes up and you can't turn in the hw for that day. I really enjoyed this class and would take him again in the future. His class is very interactive and helps you learn concepts as you go and avoid cramming. His tests were pretty fair and he would always curve if the average was below a 70. The homework is a bit time consuming but very helpful because it forced you to be familiar with the topic before lecture. Take his class if you can!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1305 - Prof. Lopez is a very nice person and seems like he cares about his students a lot and wants them to succeed. However, there are some issues with his teaching. For one, his time management isn't great and will frequently skip over entire slides. Also, his teaching style is calm and quieter than most professors, so if you have problems with paying attention in class you will definitely have a problem engaging with the lectures. Lastly, I didn't struggle too hard with the exams (mostly because I studied rigorously for them) but they are somewhat difficult. There's probably 4 to 5 questions every exam that is extremely specific or tricky. But beyond that, I really enjoyed this course. The LA's he had in class were extremely helpful and going to his office hours were probably the turn-around of my semester. If you really want to succeed in this course, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!!! He's super nice and very intelligent. He will even give you a few hints for what to expect from the upcoming exams. Also fyi, he drops your lowest test score and replaces it with the final exam, so don't worry if you don't start out great.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2024-12-17

Comments:1305 - Dr. Lopez is a great professor. He goes really in-depth during his lectures, which can lead to us running out of time and being unable to cover everything, but he is more than welcome during office hours. A reasonable amount of HW is pretty easy and unplanned essentially "pop" quizzes. The test were quite hard and you should study in a variety of ways to do good on his test. His test really cover the whole chapter he doesn't miss any part of the chapter. The tests are multiple choice so that is nice.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:genetics - Dr Lopez can be very monotone but he is the nicest person ever and will curve by as much as 15 points. I know people say that he was horrible in the last couple of semesters but that's because it was his first time teaching at Baylor and he dropped a lot of grades. You get one exam grade replaced by your final and if you have forgotten any Smartbook assignments he will usually just drop those too. Yes you have to know how to study effectively for his exams, which are mostly application based, but a lot of people on here ranting don't know how to do that. We did in class group work which is super helpful when you and your team are involved fully, but that is up to chance- fortunately I became super good friends with my team. He works a lot on classroom community which makes the whole class enjoyable. 100% recommend.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2306 - Genetics is super interesting with him in this course. He teaches extremely well and is very straightforward in his office hours. He does a type of active learning where you do a homework sheet in the class after each chapter which is super helpful.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1306 - I took Professor Lopez my spring semester and I really enjoyed his class. The work wasn't difficult but there was still a decent amount to do. His exams weren't terrible, but you have to know, understand, and be able to recognize the topics he goes over in class and do the reading. I feel like he's a pretty fair professor, and I would take him again.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2024-10-09

Comments:1305 - Dr.Lopez is a super nice guy, but is not the best professor.I struggled in his class greatly because of the way his tests were worded. The average on all of his exams was a 65-75 in my class. His busy work assignments were easy, just mastering modules and team assignments. The exams were the most difficult part and the final was 100 questions with no curve, but it could replace your lowest exam grade. Overall, he is a great guy and has good intentions, but if I had the choice I feel like I could make a better grade in a differnt professors class.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2024-05-11

Comments:BIO 2306 - Dr. Lopez is a nice person but quite honestly the worst professor I have had at Baylor. He DOES NOT follow his syllabus and added in-class quizzes mid semester that were not helpful. He would expect us to know the material and talk about it in groups instead of actually use the time to actually teach us. On one of the tests, he uploaded the diagrams wrong so we had to all share two paper copies and it was timed! The average for tests were around 67-72% each time and he had no curve (even when he messed up the tests). and apparently it was way different than last semester so keep in mind that he might change it again.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1305 - Very nice and sweet guy, but absolutley a terrible professor. His workload is very odd and his means are failing on every exam. I've asked many times on what I can do to help my grade and everytime he tells me to just study better. His exam questions are wordered horribly (which he has even admitted to), he doesn't give half credit back on questions, and all the questions are application based. He is more than willing to meet for office hours but be prepared to wait 30-40minutes after the time yall agreed to because he isn't the best on time management. If you miss a single assignment it'll tank your grade, and he will make you do group quizzes four classes in a row so be prepared for that. In class he just reads premade slides and doesn't explain them well so it's basically just teaching yourself the class. DO NOT TAKE HIM!  - Grade In Class:F

Date: 2024-04-28

Comments:1305 - This course was made harder than it should've been. The material itself was very straight forward, but the exams were pretty tough. The means were always failing, and Dr. Lopez would curve only until the average was passing (~70). Dr. Lopez is a really nice guy though and is always willing to help the student in office hours. The test questions were just pretty difficult and the material wasn't gone over well in class. Not the worst professor, but there's definitely better  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1305 - PROS : Dr.Lopez does care about his students so much. He offers to have one on one meetings once a week to go over material if you are struggling and he does want you to do well. after each exam you go over the most missed questions with the group he assigns you with and then he explains it to the class. i don't know how most people feel about the group work, but he is very big on working as a team and gives group quizzes. CONS: a large portion of the class was depending on the final to be able to pass (final was about 100 questions, all multiple choice). almost every exam was a failing average except for one. Dr.Lopez does curve almost every exam with around 8-10 points (sometimes more) but usually the average is still around a 67 (which means the regular average is about high 50's low 60's). for one exam over half the class was failing with a 59 and below. he does not round averages at the end of the year, so the grade you have is the grade you are stuck with. exams are around 65 questions and usually he throws in a couple of random questions that we did not go over in class. he definitely favors the students that understand the material better. the homework he assigned does not really help with exams or quizzes, more like busy work in my opinion. he does care about his students, but i would definitely recommend a different professor if you care about your gpa and mental health because this class was absolute hell.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1305 - Dr. Lopez is an extremely kind person who actually enjoys teaching and cares about his students. Although his lectures can be monotone and sometimes rushed, he really understands the subject and can explain it to you better one on one. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! Developing a connection with him will give you so many opportunities in the future and in the class. Also go to class!! He can surprise you with a quiz or homemade cookies depending on the day. Overall, he is an awesome person who gives grace but do NOT slack off because he will give you the grade you deserve.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2306 - I have no idea who the person that posted before me is or if they have the wrong Dr. Lopez. I am not sure if Lopez is bad at teaching or if he just does not know how to time manage well because we get near nothing covered in class. Our last exam he covered the full last chapter (1/5th of the exam content) in 16 minutes (I timed him). To give him the benefit of the doubt because it was his first time teaching this course but our exam averages were consistently below failing. I studied my ass off for every single test and scraped by with Bs on every exam. His quizzes don't help (they are also always short notice) and his homeworks are due on Sunday nights so I frequently would forget to do them and get a zero. That being said, he seems like a really nice guy and I hope he does improve in the future. I don't want to rag on him as a person, I just would not recommend him as a professor if you care about your mental health/GPA. I am glad to get this one over with! Oh, one more note, he doesn't yet know how to operate Canvas, and his syllabus is essentially bare so your grade is kind of like a fun surprise at the end of the semester!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:2306 - I am truly grateful for taking Chris Lopez\'s class. He genuinely cares about his students, is willing to dedicate personal time to help them, and even extends invitations for meals during the Thanksgiving break for students whose families are overseas. While his teaching is excellent, it\'s essential to read the assigned books before class. This is because most of his lessons involve discussions and group quizzes, and not reading the books can result in awkward moments during group discussions. There are two types of quizzes – one is a group quiz where participation guarantees full marks, and the other is the typical individual quiz that he announces beforehand. However, it\'s recommended never to miss the class, as the group quizzes can happen without prior notice. His exams tend to be challenging, with an average score ranging from 65 to 75. He makes efforts to maintain the average above 70 through a slight curve. To achieve an A in his class, being an active participant is crucial. The homework consists of two assignments per chapter, but they are not overly burdensome as they are not very difficult. + I (personally) feel like attending SI is unnecessary for good grades on his test. I never went SI and got A on the most test.   - Grade In Class:B+
