Comments:3331 - French Rev- Loved this class and was so bumbed that he has retired. Such a knowledgeable guy, who made lectures just really interesting stories, and the kind of professor that you see on movies and tv (in a good way). He did grade kinda tough, but wanted you to improve your writing, and would really work with you if you went in to see him and follow up on your paper feedback. There aren’t many profs like him in the department, and that’s a shame, because he really knew his stuff and knew how to lecture on history for undergraduates, not on super weird or narrow topics that a lot of other profs try to push on majors. Wish I could have had one more class with him as a senior. Classic talented lecturer who did history right. Good luck finding his replacement.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - This dude sucks so much that I made an account for this. My overall GPA is a 3.6, so I am not some dumb shit that couldnt handle his course. I would drag my balls across broken glass just to see this guy retire from the shit job that he does. His tests are essay style and he grades like a bitch, I cant believe Baylor pays this guy to still teach. I went to office hours and read every night and still couldnt get the grade  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1307 - Mr. Longfellow is a really good professor. He is always willing to help on essays and go over tests with his students. He is very sassy with a dry sense of humor but thats what makes the class interesting and keeps you awake. He grades very fairly, even easy. I barely studied and did well. He's a good guy and I'd recommend him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:World History Since 1500 - Mr. (not Doctor. like I thought during the entire semester) is a very dry professor. Other reviewers were correct when saying he can come off as a bit condescending, but when you approach him after class, he enjoys the interest shown and will be happy to explain any questions or concerns. He does require reading six short novels. He divides them into sections of three books each and requires an essay on one of the first three and one of the latter six. They are easy reads and writing an essays are four pages (ahem, two double spaced, excuse me) so they are quick writes. People tend to make a bigger deal out of them than necessary. For the books you don't read, just study a summary well enough to be able to maintain a class discussion which he generally feeds you the answers to. No homework and YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH NOT READING THE TEXTBOOK if you go to all the classes and pay attention as he takes test questions from both lectures and the textbook (4 identify short answers out of 16 or so to choose from and 2 essay questions out of 6 to 8 to choose from). I certainly wouldn't consider myself a 'history buff' but I definitely find the subject matter interesting. I will not toss around the term 'easy A' because that's relative to the person, but as with nearly all professors; pay attention, take good notes and getting a B or higher should not be too difficult.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - Not a hard class, participate as much as you can in the discussions but know what you're talking about, because he will call you out if you don't. Longfellow is absolute brilliant and nice but can be intimidating, but go to class and you''l do fine.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2012-12-11

Comments:3331 - French Rev- This Professor made my life horrible. He is cold, and unhelfpful. He judges you by how well you write a paper and if you are wrong when answering a question he shoots you down. He is not an easy teacher and makes you write quite a bit of papers and grades extremely hard on them.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2012-01-19

Comments:1305 - This professor/class is HARD. Longfellow is seriously brilliant-the man knows everything about everything. He's a little intimidating and can come off as condescending. However, if you go to him one-on-one, he's very helpful. There are 6 books to read (not that long) and you choose which two to write a 3 page essay on (either theme or character analysis). There are three tests including the final. All are short answer and essay. You can't b.s. your way through the essay b/c he WILL call you on it. Alot of people hated this class, but as a history major I highly recommend Longfellow. He obviously loves history & you learn ALOT in this class. Despite the difficulty of it, I'm taking him again next semester which should speak for itself. Do the readings, take good/FAST notes, and ask him for help on the essays & you can pull an A.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:BIC 2334 - The ratings I listed above don't really mean anything. Here's what you need to know about Longfellow: Longfellow is very, very, very smart. It's obvious to the class, and it is obvious to him. You will never be the smartest person in the room, so don't try to be. Longfellow is a fantastic large group lecturer, but his powerpoints are poor. In small group, he lectures and leaves "blanks" that he hopes members of the class fill with the right answer. This rarely occurs, and you will feel bad for not answering right. Longfellow will tell you that you are wrong quite often. However, he is always on topic and full of good information, which is high praise considering that many small group leaders do not stay on the right subject. Longfellow is difficult to please because "ok is my highest compliment." That said, Longfellow is a good professor and you can get an A in this course. The most important advice I can give you though is to NEVER WRITE ABOUT THE FRENCH REVOLUTION FOR ANY REASON. You WILL be wrong, and you WILL fail that given essay/assignment.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-12-16

Comments:1305 - BORING CLASS. Lecture the entire class every class. I wanted to run out of there every day. The tests aren't too hard though, they're all writing (essays and short answers), but you MUST take notes from his lecture. Write fast, and good luck. He is nice and helpful though.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2011-12-11

Comments:1305 - I did not enjoy this class, but I blame the majority of that to the fact I do not like history. He is a very nice and intelligent man. The comments stating you do not have to read all six books, though, is wrong. Everybody in our class thought that and did not read the 5th one. The discussion was a total failure and obvious nobody had read. The following test, though it was supposed to cover all of his lectures and outside readings, was completely over the book most people did not read. That hurt a lot of people's grade. Overall, if you pay attention in class (though it's hard because he lectures the entire time and does not give an outline to follow) and read the books, it is not a hard class and is a bit interesting.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2010-12-12

Comments:1305 - I can't urge you to take this class enough. While it was not an "easy" A...it was definately not THAT hard to make an A. Please ignore the hater comments on here and take him. He does lecture the whole time...true...but his lectures are more like stories. He actually makes it interesting. All you have to do is write down what he says in class, study it, and take the test. I didn't even read our history text book. And as for the mini books he gives you to read, you only have to really read 2 of the 6 because that is all the essays he requires. He is a great teacher and you can really tell that he loves what he teaches.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2010-04-15

Comments:1307 - My least favorite thing about Longfellow was how condescending he was to his students. He would ask a question and wait for an answer, and when someone finally gave their guess, he would scoff at them, tell them why they were wrong or only partially right, then after doing this to multiple students, he would tell us what the right answer was in his opinion. The hardest thing about the class itself were the 3 map quizzes: you have to memorize at least 30-35 places for each one and theres no word bank, so spelling has to be correct, too. If you don't like someone talking at you for a whole class period with no powerpoints and nothing else to follw, then take a different history professor.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2010-03-23

Comments:1305 - This class is a very easy class if you pay attention..that is the hard part. Dr. Longfellow is a great guy and loves history, his lectures are like he is telling a story like he was actually there when history took place. The only problem with the lectures is the lectures the entire class, leaves no rooms for questions, and he become a bit boring and it becomes hard to stay awake after hearing him so much. His test are easy if you read all the information and at least or two of the assigned books from outside reading. They are all essay, three of them, 4 open ended key terms (you choose from about 12 different terms), and 2 short essays (you can pick from about 5 topics). The thing i hated were the map tests, his study guide has more places than what you know and he doesn't pass them out until a week about the test. Then you have to write 2 essays about 6 different books you must read. Dr. Longfellow will help you if you go to him and ask him and he is very helpful! It is easy to get an A if you just keep up with ALL the reading and go to him for suggested help on your essays.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2009-12-16

Comments:1305, 1306 - He has an air of confidence knowledge, which can be rather disconcerting for the average student. As for the tests, come on; the odds of you passing are amazing. The tests give you multiple topics to write about, making it very hard to not have something to write about. Basically, this class is easy, teaches you a lot, and is a gpa booster.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-05-10

Comments:1305 - I honestly don't understand a lot of the ratings here. Yes, you will have to read 6 books in a semester, but they're all fairly short and you only have to write papers of two of them (and you get to choose which!). The tests are easy, IF you pay attention and take good notes in his lectures. They require you to write four IDs and two essays in one class period. I never write more than a page for my essays and usually get full or almost full credit. Just make sure you know what you're talking about and SAY IT. He doesn't want fluff and will call you out on said fluff. Also, I find that his lectures are very entertaining, but I'm also a history major. He WILL help you, if you go and ask for it. He's very good about reminding you about the homework.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-04-11

Comments:1305/06 - I loved his classes. Really if you pay attention in class its an easy class. I never read the textbook and i got A's. His tests are all essay and short answer, and very easy i got A's on all of them. The rest of the class is 6 books that you read and discuss. You have to write essays over two of the books but thats it. There are also 3 map quizzes, but he gives you a study sheet so they are pretty easy. Hes very sarcastic, but i thought he was funny and enjoyed the class  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1305 - The only thing that surpasses this professor's readiness and willingness to teach is his intelligence. Professor Longfellow is very lenient and well-versed in his area of study. His exams are easy (one literally only needs to know 1/3 of the material), and his choice of primary sources for the course understanding greatly enhances the class content.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-02-20

Comments:HIS 1307 - Dr. Longfellows class was very difficult for me. I tought it was going to be pretty easy because I love history so much. There is alot of reading so keep up with it...don't wait till the last minute. His tests are very hard to prepare for but not impossible. He knows what he is talking about but he can get a little monotonous. If you want an easy "A" then by all means take another class. However, this class will NOT kill you. Give Dr. Longfellow a break guys...he wasn't that bad!!!!   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2008-01-07

Comments:1307 - ughhh! This class was horrible! The lectures were long and boring and during book discussions, if you can call them that, he did all the talking and when anyone tried to answer his questions, he was SO condescending! I would suggest taking someone else...  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-01-05

Comments:his 1307 - very boring. professor longfellow lectures the entire time every class. he talks too fast and has a very monotone voice. I had to pay rapt attention in order to follow everything he was saying which was hard because his voice put me to sleep. The material on the test comes from lectures as well as the book and much of the stuff on the test was never discussed in class so beware b/c i went into the first exam assuming that he covered everything that would be on the test. I studied a lot for the tests. you read 6 novels, and wright 2 essays over 2 of the books, which i thought he graded easily. there are 3 essay tests which consist of 5 short answer and 2 long essays, once again, i thought he was gracious on the grading of the tests. 3 map tests which weren't too hard if u studied the maps, i made high a's on all. and a discussion percentage which is easy to get full credit in so long as u go to all the classes  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2007-12-26

Comments:1306 - Prof Longfellow is a great guy. I took his course thinking it was going to be horrible, but he is VERY knowledgable in his field and is willing to help students. I missed my final and e-mailed him and he rescheduled a date for me to take it.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2007-05-10

Comments:1306 - Longfellow seems to be getting a lot of crap, but i really don't understand why. His tests aren't that hard, they are essay based with identied just like every other history test by every other Prof basically. His lectures are typical history lectures. there are 6 books to read for the semester but all except 2 are pretty easy reads and you only have to write 2 papers for the semester, each over the book of your choice. there are 3 easy map quizes that together total only 10% of your grade. people generally don't do well on them because there is a lot of info to know, but he only askes 25 questions. i have a terrible memory but still do well because i study for about 2 hours the night before. he has a slight god complex but it doesn't dominate his personality or anything. pretty easy class  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2007-05-01

Comments:BIC - Dr. Longfellow seems to be one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. I gave him a four for his teaching ability because he is very intimidating because I think he knows how smart he is. I had him for a BIC course, so all the workload and tests and quizzes were departmental, but if you are looking for a professor who is fair, incredibly intelligent and well read, you should definitely try to take one of his classes. He knows what he is talking about.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-01-09

Comments:1305 - I am a History major, its my passion. This man has the God complex if ever anyone has. Argue with him and you're sunk, even when you can prove your right.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1305/06 - Dr. Longfellow is an amazing professor. He is one of the smartest professors in his field. If your a history buff you will find his lectures interesting, he is a bit boring at times but nontheless he gets his point across. TAKE GOOD NOTES. This is what helps on the essay tests, and read the books. I appreciate his effort to expose students to historical literature, and youll be surprised by how much you'll enjoy the novels. If it wasnt for him i proably would have never read a novel outside of class during the semester. Take it from me, im a BIO major and i still loved his class, despite the fact that im a science person.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2006-11-09

Comments:1305 - Longfellow is one of my favorite profs so far at Baylor.I was surprised at his low rating. He is very interesting and intelligent. You always know what to expect out of class...very solid. If you want to make a good grade just show up to class and pay attention. Reading those really boring plays was horrible, but if you do well on the tests, you'll be fine. Make sure to study hard for maps...getting a study group together to divide up the locations is the best way to go.   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2006-08-21

Comments:His 1305 - Boringest class youll ever take (make sure u bring a pillow)...but it should be a free A. One of the few history teachers that lets you choose which essay questions u want to answer...and theyre broad enough that u can talk about what u know...his lectures are mainly summaries of the chapters so u can choose to do reading or paying attention in class...u read 6 books in this class and write essays over 2...the essays are mainly graded on if theyre well-written, not what u write about. The only hard part is that he gives 3 insanely difficult map quizzes, but study your ass off and u can make a B on those.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-12-13

Comments:1305,1306 - Longfellow's classes requre an enormous amount of studying. You not only cover hundreds of years of history, but you have to read six outside novels each semester. However, if you put the time in, you should make at least a B. Longfellow is an extremely intelligent man, and knows what he's talking about, so don't bother arguing with him. The most important thing is to NEVER miss class. He lectures from beginning to end, and sometimes it seems liek he doesn't stop to take a breath. If you miss just one class, your test grade will hurt. Also, if you aren't good with maps, you should probably avoid this class. Map tests are only 10% of your average but they're incredibly hard.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-12-01

Comments:hist 1307 - I actually liked Longfellow. He knows his stuff, and as long as you stay attentive you WILL get all the material you need to know.Sure most of the time he lectures, but enjoys when people speak up and ask questions, it was 15% of my grade. You have to write 2 or 3 short papers, which if your arguement is presented well, you will do fine on. His test are easy if you study your notes and highlight important info and people in the book. Contrary to popular belief, he IS a nice guy. If you hated him or his class then you must not enjoy history.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-07-11

Comments:a few - I had Dr. Longfellow for a few classes. I thought he was great. If you are looking for an easy A then don't take him, but if you want to be challenged a little then he is perfect. I loved listening to his lectures and I did not feel that he graded unfairly - quite the oppisite. I believe that he graded fair and that is the problem that most people had with him. He gives the grade you deserve - no give aways. Take him for upper level history if you can.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-07-08

Comments:1307 - I loved Longfellow's class. He really was not that difficult, and his lectures were informative and funny. He's an eccentric person, but he knows his stuff. He's not big on discussion, but his lectures are good enough that it doesn't matter. I would bet that most of the people who hated his class didn't like history, or didn't want to read books and write two short papers - honestly, not a heavy workload for a history class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2005-04-11

Comments:BIC 2334 - This was definitely the first C in a BIC class for me. The worst BIC professor ever, without a doubt. Completely goes against what the BIC stands for---TOTALLY discourages discussions in class. All he does is lecture the entire time, usually about things that have nothing to do with what we need to know for the tests. My least favorite BIC class ever, and I love BIC. For your own good, steer clear of this one.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2004-12-28

Comments:1305 - I have never received below a B in a history course and I had to study my rear off just to pull off this C. Pretty much everything everyone else says is true so I won't repeat it, however the man is a very good historical scholar and knows his stuff, but that doesn't make him a good teacher either.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2004-12-20

Comments:1305 - Well his lectures are boring. This is his class....you take 3 test and he divides up this history book accordingly. You have ID's which are very random..and essay's which are very random. Then you read 6 books..and write two essays. Oh yeah map quizes too! Blah! I give hime this much ....he knows History so don't ever challenge him!!!  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2004-12-13

Comments:History 1305 - Basically I wanted to kill my self every time I went to this class. Lectures are monotonous and usually go five minutes after every time. Tests are all essay and hard to study for, you cannot say anything during the lectures, and basically he would rather fail you than pass you. If you take him you should be slapped. No one deserves to make college this hard on themselves.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2004-11-29

Comments:W.Hist thru 1400 - NOT a good teacher, terrible, tons of reading and the tests are impossible to study for. the highest possible grade on a test or a paper is a B-  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2004-11-08

Comments:History through 1000 - this guy is terrible, avoid at all costs, hes a terribly boring uncaring professor, doesnt care about the subject or the students, about as fun as watching paint dry, avoid at all costs  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2004-10-28

Comments:1307 - Worst prof in the entire world! Even if history is the last class you need to graduate and he is the only class open, postpone it until you can get someone else! He will fail you and accuse you of cheating or plagerizing even though you are innocent. NEVER NEVER NEVER take him unless you want to have to retake history!  - Grade In Class:F

Comments:His- 1700-present - Teacher from hell.... 6 novels were read in 1 semester. 2 major papers have to be written on them.Test are all essay and short ans. Everyday is the same class.. lecture, lecture, more montone lecture.I do not reccomend asking a question in class, unless you want your professor to make you look like a fool.. good luck w/this one, get out while you can..  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1307 - this guy knows his stuff, but the workload is impossible. was smart alecky to students and blew up and walked out twice before i dropped the class. a lot of reading, annoying quizzes, and a few papers. have to seriously study to make decent grades on the tests, but even then...good luck...i had a low C when i dropped. i would reccommend another teacher if possible.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:HIS 1307 - -Striaght lecture, little grades, much assigned readings, questions on test come out of no where, there is not a proper way to prepare for the test inorder to make a good grade. Imopssible class, does not seem like teacher wants to be teatching,to help or cares about his students.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Date: 2003-11-17

Comments:he's pretty good at teaching i suppose, although sometimes boring, but he is extremely rude and disrespectful to students. i never asked a question in his class because i pitied the fools who did- he made them feel completely stupid. his tests are too hard, he grades hard, and don't believe him when he says keep it "short and to the point on the essays" because he only gives you a decent grade if you babble on for hours on the subject. oh and he requires an insane amount of reading homework. i dont recommend him.

Comments:You call this man a professor? This man is rude, sarcastic, and jackass! He thinks everyone who askes questions is a complete idiot. Lectures are boring as hell, and the tests. . well lets not even go there. He has a tendency to fail students baseed on his own WRONG assumptions. My advice take someone else.

Comments:Lectures are informative, fast-paced, and slightly boring. He knows his stuff. He requires a lot of outside reading for class, but his tests are easy, and he basically uses the same tests every semester.
