*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:MTH 1321 - Dr. Ireland is genuinely one of the SWEETEST, most thoughtful, and intentional professors I’ve had. He explains every concept in such simple, clear terms that it’s incredibly easy to follow along. He is very mindful of pacing and never rushes through lectures, he posts lecture videos ahead of time, so you can come to class prepared or review at your own pace. The workload is very manageable, with only online homework assignments that give you plenty of time to complete. He also provides a problem list before every test, which is extremely helpful because it ensures you’re focusing on exactly what you need to know. He even goes out of his way to hold review sessions to help everyone feel prepared. He is the BEST teacher TAKE HIM!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:MTH1321 - Dr. Ireland was probably the worst professor/teacher experience I've experienced thus far. He is a kind individual and you can tell he has a passion for education, but not a passion for explanation nor mathematics really. He had a kind of waning faux-kindness that depleted by the end of the first exam when he stated that the 45% average on the exam was the fault of the class, and that a good chunk of us should simply drop because we're evidently not smart enough for his material. Exam material rarely reflected practice problems done in class and was instead cartoonishly difficult, utilizing techniques not practiced in class. I've since taken another calc class and can definitively say it was him, not the material, that made the class so difficult. If you do take him, attempt to make the practice problems MUCH more difficult than you think they will be and seek out help early and often, whether that be his own office hours (I'd actually recommend this), tutoring, or other resources. Just know that there are better professors, and that if you don't HAVE to take him, don't. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:1321 - I'm going to start by saying that Dr. Ireland is a super nice guy. He always came to class with a positive attitude and started with a prayer. You can tell he's passionate about what he's teaching, but he isn't the best. After our first test he would not tell us the class average (I guess it was too bad) and by the end of the year our class decreased to half the size it was at the beginning of the year. I will also say it seemed as if he encouraged students to drop? Anyway, his tests were far "easier" than the final, but I still did not do great. He is a very strict grader as well. Overall, he is very knowledgable, but he is not the best at teaching. If you have to take calculus he's probably one of the better professors, but there seems to be no amazing options at Baylor. All of that being said, I do not like math and am happy I made a B in calculus, but I do feel a lot of my learning was self taught. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1321 - Ireland is such a nice person but an ineffective teacher. During lectures, the practice problems are easy enough to raise your confidence, until you walk into the exam and see a problem way harder than he's ever given in class. His exams are full of "gotcha" questions rather than testing for understanding. He has practice sheets, but for the final, it had so many problems for every type of question that I just didn't know what to study or how to study. Studying for his class throughout the year and for the final was overwhelming, like he wanted to take up all of your time - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1321 - I would not recommend taking him for Calculus 1. He's nice, but his teaching ability isn't the best. Half of our class dropped his course after he removed our drop exam, causing the majority of the class to fail. - Grade In Class:DROP
Comments:MTH 1316 - Dr. Ireland is such a nice guy! He just assigns a lot of homework and is not the best at teaching material - Grade In Class:C
Comments:MTH 1321 - Wow, he is hands down the BEST math teacher I have ever had. In all my years of living, I never liked math. But after taking Dr. Ireland, I genuinely feel that I have a thorough understanding of calculus and actually found myself enjoying doing his exams and assignments. He is patient, helpful, and encouraging. He is incredibly enthusiastic about what he is teaching about, which will 100% make you want to listen to him. Despite having him early in the morning, I always felt pumped to be in his classroom. He WANTS you to do well, his exams are straightforward and not meant to trick you. I felt confident while taking the departmental final, and it was all thanks to him! TAKE HIM!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1320/1321 - I took him for pre-cal 1320 and calculus 1321. I am a pre-med student and I absolutely loved his class. I am by no means a math person, but I was able to find success in both of his classes. He gives you guided notes. This is unheard of at college! He would give a summarized version of the notes a couple of days before the test, and that is all you needed for the tests. He was the nicest professor I have ever met. He actually wanted to get to know you as a person, which made learning from him a joy. I would talk with him about different churches in Waco, and we would try and meet up after church to say hi. He is a new professor at Baylor, which is why there is only one review (right now) on him. I can promise if you take him, you will be so happy with your choice. You have about 2 homeworks a week that are online and have 5 attempts per question. Nothing crazy at all. He will prepare you for the final perfectly, and is more than willing to meet during office hours. He will make sure the class understands before moving on the next topic. He genuinely wants the class to succeed. I know Baylor's math department gets a bad reputation, but with Dr. Ireland he makes math feel enjoyable. I could not recommend him enough. - Grade In Class:A
