Comments:3309 - I adore Dr. Calafate. I heard a lot about linguistics being the hardest Spanish course, but honestly I thought it was pretty straightforward. There is a lot of memorization of unheard of concepts, especially in the first unit, but the exams are very straightforward. She gives you a study guide that looks exactly like the exam about a week in advance, and dedicates a whole class period to review before the exams. I only felt the need to study for a couple hours the night before each exam, as long as I paid attention in class and took good notes. Do the practice examples, and you'll do fine! I absolutely recommend Calafate for this course.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:SPA3309 - This course was probably the hardest course I have ever taken at any of the colleges I have been to, It was very hard to grasp even as a native Spanish speaker. There is so much to memorize and the tests are mainly written answers.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:SPA 3309 - Profesora Calafate is a great teacher teaching a class that most folks don't want to take. The first three weeks of this class were awful, the content is boring, and there is no connection to Spanish. However, she gives you the test material ahead of time and is very clear about what the test will look like and be. The class is taught in a mix of Spanish and English, and honestly I don't feel like my Spanish was improved a lot by it. However, Calafate was an empathetic, chill professor who was able to make a boring and semi-useless class feel simple and reasonable. I can't fault her at all for the fact that it's required for the minor. If you have the opportunity to take her for this class, don't even question it. You absolutely should.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3309 - Dra. Calafate is an outstanding professor and made an extremely difficult Spanish class manageable. Her teaching style is very accommodating and she is more than willing to help students who are not as proficient with learning difficult concepts. That being said, I would not take this class unless you are confident in your Spanish abilities, including speaking, reading, and writing. She is very lenient when it comes to grading grammar on homework's and quizzes, but you still must have intermediate to advanced proficiency to earn a good grade. There is about one homework a week and a final project that incorporates all of the semester's concepts into one (do not procrastinate on this), but she'll pause the homework's for when the project ramps up. There are 3 quizzes (exams) and a final, all weighted equally. They are all a mix of MCQs and FRQs, as well as listening and reading comprehension. The content is difficult, but she provides study guides that accurately reflect quiz content about a week in advance. Aside from course content, Dra. Calafate is always available and makes an extra effort to meet with students, even outside of her posted office hours within which she has TONS of availability. She speaks Spanish and Portuguese and is a great representative of what the department offers outside of class (charla, events, etc.). Overall, she is an extremely nice person, and even brought treats to class in the end!! Take Dra. Calafate if you can, you wont regret it!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3309 - Wonderful professor. it is a difficult, advanced class but the professor does an amazing job explaining things. everything is explained super simply and then the more complicated aspects are built on that. It is a lot of coursework, but the professor breaks the work down in the perfect mix of giving you enough time and flexibility while giving you frequent enough communications and deadlines to avoid getting behind. Highly recommend this professor and I hope to take them in future semesters. Also extra note for the GORGEOUS canvas page, in all my 18hrs of classes this Canvas page is the most seamlessly organized.  - Grade In Class:A
