Comments:CHE 1301 - Dr. Byun might be the best stem professor I've ever had. Not only did he learn ever name in my 50 person lecture room, he genuinely cared about my well being and academic performance in both his class and others. He conveys the course information in a rapid but efficient pace, and asks the class if they have questions, and if someone does, he takes the time to answer/explain any concepts necessary. Super sweet guy, and I would take him all four years if I could. At the end of the semester, he recommended me to another professor for a research lab, and thats where I do research now.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE1301 - I absolutely loved taking Dr. Byun. He is a really good teacher, and he is very engaging. He will lecture for most of the class, and he records his lectures. He also posts his slides before class which is really helpful just being able to look over them. During class he will work on example problems, and then he will have the class do some while he walks around and helps anyone who is struggling. HE CURVES HIS TESTS. The homework is helpful, and I always feel prepared going into tests. I would recommend Dr. Byun to anyone who loves chemistry and to anyone who struggles with it. He knew all of his students' names and faces within the first week or two of classes. He is funny and knowledgeable. He really wants to see his students learn the material and do well in the class. When my class found out he was not going to teach 1302 this next semester, we were all sad. I absolutely love this professor!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 1301 - Byun my GOAT, made learning Chem actually fun & interesting. He was always super helpful in class and office hours, and always answered my questions even if they we're a bit odd. Workload is a 4 just cause it's an intro course so there's a limit to how little he can give, but the homework is very simple. Only reason I got a B+ instead of an A is because of sig fig mistakes and my honestly pretty poor quiz grades. So do good on those! Byun actually spends the time to memorize all of his students names and learns how to pronounce them regardless of how much you talk in class so it goes without saying that he's invested in you. Side note the guy also literally uses questions from his slides on his tests so do with that what you will. Overall do some practice problems, devote some hours to studying for his tests & quizzes, go to more office hours than I did, and try and put around half the effort he does into the class and you'll get an A. My final number grade 89.9. HE WILL NOT ROUND, SO STAY LOCKED!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHE 1301 - Dr. Byun is an amazing teacher and makes a difficult class very manageable. He is very friendly, super knowledgeable, and always does his best to interact with every student, even leaving personal notes of encouragement on the tests he hands back! He provides a large amount of resources, with tons of extra Aktiv problems and extra practice on the slides (which he often utilizes in his exams), office hours, and SI. The class and exams are definitely not easy and you have to make sure you're putting in enough effort on your part to keep practicing. His exams are very reasonable if you understand the concepts and can apply them. He does go through the content rather quickly, but the lecture is recorded and his notated slides are also provided. He also makes it clear what information he expects you to memorize and what information will be provided. Dr. Byun is one of the best professors I've had, and I highly recommend him as he truly cares about the students and only wants for everyone to succeed.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1301 - I was very nervous going into a chemistry class since I had little background knowledge. Despite that, I felt like the lecture slides and content were manageable and helpful to prepare for quizzes and exams. Dr. Byun always posted the lecture slides before the lecture so that we could go over them before class. This was very helpful since he goes over the conceptual stuff pretty quickly, so that we can spend more time on practice problems. The practice problems were of easy to moderate difficulty, and gave you a basic understanding of homework, quizzes, and exams. He always came prepared for lecture and would be very thorough in teaching. He was also mindful of the students’ comfort and would always play popular music before class began and dimmed the lights so it wouldn’t hurt our eyes. The syllabus content for this class wasn’t much, with 6 quizzes, chapter homework, 3 exams, and a final. However, you can easily fall behind if you’re not disciplined with doing practice problems and gauging your own understanding. The exams are curved and include 20-25 MCQs with 2-3 FRQs with partial credit. The hardest thing about his exams are time management, so it’s important to do many Aktiv practice problems to prepare for the exam. The content included material mainly from the lecture slides, quizzes, and homework. The exams don’t just test you on your ability to memorize content but to actually apply it and think about what you’re learning. He also releases exam keys and gives your exam back to you after. Quizzes and homework assignments were take home and he gives plenty of time (30-40 mins for 9 problems) for the proctored take home quizzes. Dr. Byun himself is very approachable. He takes the time to learn everyone’s name and is honest when it comes to his coursework. You can ask him questions about the quizzes and exams and he’ll be straightforward about it. He also reminds you of deadlines every class so you don’t forget when the homework or quiz is due. He holds a lot of time for office hours and is very welcoming when you come in to talk about a problem. He even goes over past exam or quiz problems with you. Take his class if you want a professor who actually cares about you and your success.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE1301 - He is THE BEST TEACHER!! He teaches very well in class but also very available for students in office hours and via email. He loves his job teaching and is the most passionate professor I've ever seen. I wouldn't say he's classes are easy, but he gives excellent resources to study and his exams are very fair. If you put in the right amount of effort, you can get a good grade.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1301 - The BEST professor I have ever had! He goes through every topic in a very structured manner that makes it extremely easy to understand. This is a hard course for many people, but he definitely makes it more manageable. His exams are VERY reflective of the Aktiv homework, slides, and quizzes. He often takes problems off the slides and uses them on exams, so it is very predictable (he is NEVER trying to trick you). He genuinely cares about his students, about a month into classes he knew everyone's name. He takes the time to get to know you as a person if you are willing to share. He definitely matches your energy, so if you put some energy and enthusiasm forward, he will LOVE you. He does a LOT to try to help you succeed - he gave us an extra open note quiz, which acted as bonus points, and he curved his exams very generously, adding 4-8 points to everyone's score per exam. Definitely go to office hours and work through problems with him. The SI for Fall 2025 wasn't great, but he has a new one for Spring 2026 who I have heard is great, so definitely use that resource. Practice is going to be your key to success in this class! Overall, an AMAZING professor who makes a very hard course fun!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1301 - Dr. Byun is a fun and enjoyable professor! Highly recommend building a good relationship with him from the start (he remembers everyone and everything about everyone). Complete the homework on time, do all of the SI sheets (regardless of if you physically go to SI), take ALL of the quizzes seriously and prepare adequately, highly recommend doing the 200+ extra practice questions in aktiv (dont have to do all of them but I kept going until I felt completely confident), and all of the info on his slides are game. Overall, this class is good preperation for whats to come, it isnt too hard if you make sure to manage your time and push yourself in class/when studying.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Chem 1301 - Dr. Byun was a solid teacher overall throughout the year. He teaches pretty fast, but it's not too difficult to stay on track, and he has 3 exams and 1 final that replaces one of the exams. He gives homework on Activ and does online, lockdown browser quizzes during the weekend, with one of the quizzes being an optional "freebie" quiz over thanksgiving which is not lockdown and adds points to your lowest quiz. The tests are pretty hard, and the SI is not good in my opinion, but if you study the slides religiously and practice solving the problems, you won't finish with below a B.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CHE 1301 - Don't do it!!! I went into this course with some level of confidence, having excelled in AP chemistry, however this course was much more difficult than it needed to be. I understand this is chemistry and it's difficult no matter the professor but this was just another level. His teaching style is not for everyone, he flies through the lecture slides quickly and gives very surface level practice problems. I would recomend you seek additional practice problems when reviewing for tests. Homeworks were completion grades, however the problems looked nothing like what would be on the exam. Quizzez were occasionally given and were take home 9 problem lock down browser. There are 3 exams plus the final, no drop tests, and the final is not curved. Exam material is unpredictable don't even try, however ocasional a practice problem from the slides will appear. His helpfulness and availability are bipolar to put it simply. He took the time to learn the names of everyone of this students and encouraged office hours giving the impresion he genuinley cares about our success, however when actually seeking his help you could be met with different responses. Some students claimed to be me with understanding and patience, they got detailed answers and guidence for exams. While others, like me, were met with annoyed and condescending looks when asking genuine questions and recieved no guidence for exams only "anything is fair game". Dr. Byun is extreamly smart, which I think is also an issue because he finds it hard to dumb down the material and teach general chemistry 1, in turn he makes everything more complex. Overall unless you are great at learning on your own or somehow manage to be one of his favorites, I don't recommend this professor.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:CHE 1301 - I had AP credit (score of 5) but still enrolled in this course to ease into freshman year and boost my GPA. Earning an A required so much more effort than I anticipated and I regret not dropping the course regardless because of my experience with Byun. He encourages attending office hours however my experience was that the interactions and level of respect varied between students. Some students received more patience, engagement and detailed explanations than others, which made office hours feel inconsistent and discouraging to me. So keep in mind that positive reviews may have come from favorites. For people like me, even asking considerate questions can result in blunt or dismissive responses, like “anything on slides is considered fair game”. For others, he provides guidance through everything you need to know and expect. This inconsistent treatment made the class frustrating especially since I was already well prepared.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 1301 - The workload was very manageable, however he is not the best lecturer. The in-class practice is very surface level so it is very important to do the extra practice to not make mistakes on the exams. The tests were predictable outside of some ambiguous and conceptual MCQs that we were not well prepared for. Quizzes are take home and the homework is completion.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Chem 1301 - Dr. Byun is an amazing professor. He does teach at a fast pace; however, he records every lecture and posts it as well with the slides after he makes notes on them in class. The homework is super manageable and helps with learning the material better. DO THE SI PRACTICE EXAMS. They helped a lot and some questions were almost identical. He does curve the tests if the average is low to help out students and he doesn't want anyone to fail. The tests were very similar to his quizzes so make sure to review those before exams. Overall, it was a great course and he is an amazing teacher.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Chem - I really enjoyed taking Dr. Byun’s class. He always made sure we understood the material, and it’s obvious that he genuinely cares for his students. I never felt like I couldn’t go to him with questions or ask about a topic I was confused about. His classes are interactive, and he works hard to make the material applicable and engaging. I definitely recommend taking his class.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:chem 1301 - Byun is a solid teacher who is flexible and amicable. His teaching style may not suit some people though; although he teaches thoroughly, he tends to move through lectures quickly. That being said, his best and brightest skill is probably answering questions and leaving no room for confusion. His exams are manageable if you study; realistically, you should not be getting below a B on any exams. They are MCQ and FRQ, with around 70% being the MCQ. He also LOVES math on his exams, which makes them very predictable. His class is simple to study for and never confusing, which I most appreciate. Take him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - A great instructor with a lot of energy. He has a lot of in-class learning walkthroughs which is great, but often his methods are overly complicated. His exams are complicated and loosely connected to the lectures. Much of the time, expect it to be 3x harder than the in class problems, with less than half the time. Workload is just some aktiv, with quizzes to add. Wish I was smarter in chem so I could've fully enjoyed the class. Wish he helped me more rather than walking to four of the same all A students. Recommend.  - Grade In Class:F
