*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:ENG 2310 - Daily readings and quizzes that are super easy, Dr. Hoffman is a hoot she always tries to make class fun for us and is very passionate about the subjects, if you ask a question you'll make her whole day. Exams are super easy she tells you everything you need to know and gives you a study sheet to prepare. As long as you read you pass (likely an A) - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2310 - Dr. Hoffman is a great professor who very much enjoys what she's teaching. The class is structured with readings before every class, which took me about 10-40 minutes depending on the day, and if you have about an hour in between classes like I did it isn't bad at all. There is also a quiz or activity every class over the reading but if you actually read it, or at least look at the spark notes, it shouldn't be difficult to get a 100 every time. I had two objective exams which were mainly identifying and explaining quotes from the readings. I was only made to write one essay, with the final simply being to revise the essay already written. I really enjoyed the final podcast, which is basically just a conversation with your group in front of the class, as it was very informal and you can make it what you want. As a whole, the grades are spread out pretty evenly so doing bad on one thing won't kill your grade. If you're looking for a fun and easy ENG 2310, TAKE HOFFMAN. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2310 - Not sure why her ratings are low. I am by no means an english class lover but her class was SO easy to pass. It was the class I dedicated the least amount of time to. She is super cool and nice, her midterm and final is super easy if you study for it, I got A+ on both and I normally suck at testing. There is a reading quiz almost every class, but I literally spark noted every reading assignment and got good grades on every quiz. She does a podcast assignment which is an easy A, as well as a reading group assessment, another easy A. I would definitely suggest her class, super easy. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Dr. Hoffman is a very sweet person who tries her best to make her class fun. She does daily quizzes over the readings that are not difficult but make it necessary for you to have read. There were two exams, a final essay, and a group podcast. None of these were difficult, but the group podcast is not everyone's cup of tea. An average class consisted of a short presentation on the reading followed by some group work and class conversation. All in all, Hoffman is a solid option for this class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Im not sure why her rating is low, in order to pass the class all you need to do is read the chapters assigned before class and then you're quizzed on it (sometimes she lets us off). You can tell she is very passionate about what she does. As long as you actually read and come to class her class is an easy A. During the semester you have reading groups that you have to be in (you pick your partners,) but it honestly isn't as bad as you think, I got really close with my reading group! For the midterm and final she does highlight sheets which are basically majority of the questions asked. This isn't a blow off class because if you don't read it'll hurt you when trying to study for the exams! Take Dr. Hoffman I really enjoyed her! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - This class is obviously reading heavy, but you do not need to have prior knowledge of anything or do any deep analysis which I was happy to find out. We have daily quizzes over the reading, which are mostly super easy. We have short story readings from the textbook and then we read two books at the end. The Hemingway book was hard to follow, I would suggest researching the chapters because I had no idea what was happening from that book. Hoffman makes herself available and is clear about what to expect on tests. We have a midterm and a final, which consist of an objective portion, and an in-class essay. She grades fair. You can tell she is passionate about literature and she does want us to succeed. This is not a blow-off class, but if you show up and do the reading an A is very doable. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2310 - Easiest class ever. Had to juggle many science courses and this class was always a nice breather. Quiz every class over the reading (easy). Midterm and Final is given to you through her highlight sheets. Her essay for both were very easy too. She grades very leniently. Anyone who didn't get an A either didn't do the work or didn't show up. This class is extremely easy. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - I honestly don't know why her rating is low. Her class is really easy. For her reading, just read gradesaver (which is like sparknotes). It includes quotes too in the summary which helps for the quizzes. I think I only read one reading from the entire semester. She gives quite a bit of extra credit too. Her midterm and final are structured the same. You have an essay that you have to write for the exams and turn it in on the exam day. The only big thing about the essay is the thesis, so make sure it is strong. She will oven allow you to email her your thesis beforehand so she can give you pointers on it. As long as that is good and your essay follows the prompt you'll get an A. For the rest of the exams, she creates highlight sheets. Just study those. Those have the quotes you might be tested on and any other information you need. She goes over them in class before the exams and tells you literally everything you need to know. I would highly recommend her. She loves what she is teaching and tries to make it interesting. She even brought us cake one time because it was Washington Irving's birthday (her favorite author). - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - She is such a sweet teacher who is very passionate about American literature. She does assign a good amount of reading every class and you need to keep up with it, in order to do well in the class. Her tests are not hard if you make sure to do the readings throughout the semester and pay attention in class. Midterm and final arent bad. In person quiz every class period over the lecture assigned prior. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PWR 3300 - Dr. Hoffman is such a nice professor! There was not that much HW, just some reading at the beginning of the year that eventually dropped off after the first month or so. The big project assignments (a majority of your grade) are fairly straightforward, where she is more checking for citations/plagiarism than the actual content of your work. No final, and she grades fairly easily but won't give out 100s. Most people ended up with A's on all assignments unless you had a blatant problem (not turning it in). Overall very nice, had good office hours, and would take her for this class - Grade In Class:A
Comments:PWR 3300 - I took Dr. Hoffman for technical writing, as I'm a PWR major. Her first assignment in this class was letter writing, and in order to accomplish this, we had to write a thank you letter to someone. Her goal was to accomplish formal letter writing, but when I asked her if I was allowed to be informal in my thank you letter to a coach I'd had for six years, she said I could be and then docked me ten points because I was too informal. One of my classmates told me that Dr. Hoffman had gone through her paper three different times in order to find a grammatical error so she didn't have to give out a 100. When we started working on our formal reports, we went to the library for about a month. I'm also a history major, so I'm well versed in using the library and finding sources, so I was finished for the day within 20 minutes, if that. However, she always made me stay the entire time, even though I'd completed our only task for the day and I couldn't do anything more. In that month we were in the library, she could have instructed us on how to write in a technical manner, but she refused, and then (with a week left before finals) she input the grades for the formal report. She failed to communicate her expectations on the frequency of citations, so the majority of the class ended up with a placeholder zero and we were forced to do revisions for that assignment, but she didn't have them graded until an hour before grades were due. She's nice enough, I guess, but she's ridiculous about grading, she doesn't teach technical writing very well, she wastes time in class, and she does not grade in a timely manner. Her quizzes are easy but literally take anyone else. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2310 - I really do not understand how Dr. Hoffman's rating is so low! Probably one of the easiest classes I have taken at Baylor so far. Her class is structured around a quiz (around 5-10 questions) of a short reading we had to do. As long as you read, you will 100% get a good grade on it. Besides those grades there were reading group reports that were SUPER EASY (Free 100) and then the midterm and final which again, SUPER EASY. For the exams, she makes these highlight sheets which are honestly all you have to study in order to succeed. She grades the essays pretty generously, all you have to make sure to do is to follow the formatting and everything exactly the way she wants it because that's the only way you lose points. She can be kinda awkward when she tries to make small talk with you individually but at least she tries! She honestly is so nice and understanding of all her students and you can tell how passionate she is about American Literature. Take her if you need the credit or just want an easy A. YOU WILL NOT REGRET. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2310 - Wow I just do not understand how Dr. Hoffman’s rating is so low! If you are looking around for an easy A, look no further! She is an absolutely fabulous professor! She's engaging and wants our class to dive in deep during our class discussions and to get a good grasp of the material. She is always encouraging and helpful when we have questions. Dr. Hoffman is one of my favorite Baylor professors so far! For every class we had some light reading and a short reading response due (she only grades the top 5 out of the 18). During class we had a very easy quiz. Other than that, it was just 3 exams. Each exam had an objective portion and an essay. As for the objective portion, she gives you these “highlight sheets” that you fill out in class. Memorize those because that is literally a bank of questions that she pulls for the exam! I got 100 on those exams. For the essay portion, all she really cares about is that you have a strong argument and an essay that supports it. Do that, and you’re golden. For the final we could choose to either revise our second exam essay for a better grade or to take the same grade. And she literally chose to prioritize grading the kids who needed the extra grade boost to make an A first to make sure that they’d finish with an A! Like seriously, what a sweet lady. I did feel uncertain about what was expected for assignment in the beginning of the semester but once I had gotten used to how Dr. Hoffman wants things done, the class was very easy. She really likes it when students participate and speak up in class, but she won’t force it if you don’t feel comfortable. I never thought I'd ever say this but her class made me actually enjoyed English! Dr. Hoffman's class is an 11/10. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:3380 - If at all possible, DO NOT TAKE HOFFMAN. The class started out fine--daily reading quizzes that were impossible unless you did the 60+ pages of reading but all other assignments/exams were easy. But when we moved online, she was by far my least accommodating professor. She did not change anything about the class, besides posting the unhelpful powerpoints that had no info on them onto canvas, as well as some blank worksheets. The final was 13 pages long, and required very specific information that we simply did not learn. Coming from an English major who typically enjoys English classes, this class was terrible and I truly believe Hoffman enjoys talking about herself more than she does teaching. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:2310 - Dr. Hoffman is really kind and funny! Her lectures are boring but I personally don't find English fun at all. This is an easy A if you do the work. There are daily reading quizzes but they aren't even bad if you read. She gives you review sheets for the exams, which is basically the same as the test. Very easy class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 3380 - Dr. Hoffman is extremely passionate about early American literature. However, she gets carried away sometimes with rambling in class (that, on a bad day, could cause some to doze off). She gave very detailed reading quizzes every class (but if you got to class early, she'd give hints). Dr. Hoffman's class is very much so lecture based but there are many opportunities to get involved in the lecture if you're willing. Her midterm and final were made up of (6?) parts that were mainly identification and analysis, but her reviews the class before are extremely helpful. She also required essays to go with the midterm and final, but she decided that having a final, an essay for the final, and a 10-page research paper was a bit too much, so she cut the final essay! She’s a stickler for formatting on ALL essays, so watch out for that! Dr. Hoffman was super flexible with Canvas being faulty and always wanted paper copies of all of the essays due which was super helpful! Overall, I enjoyed her class. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2304 - She was a great teacher, especially for someone who despises English because im so terrible at it. There is a quiz from a reading every class, but each test has a review that reflects everything on the test. Only three papers all semester and they are done at home and brought to class. All in all, I would recommend her to anyone, especially if English isn't your thing. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2304 - Professor Hoffman is a funny, sarcastic and entertaining professor. She keeps the class fun and the tests are fairly easy. You have to read throughout the whole semester but as long as you read and do the work then you should be fine. She is a professor I would take again for any other English class and I wished I had her before. I highly recommend her for anyone who loves a professor that is enthusiastic about the subject they teach on. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Amer Lit - I loved this class! It was my first english class at Baylor so I was nervous, but I really enjoyed it and did well at it. She goes over the tests beforehand so you know what to expect. They are easy to make an A on. She grades papers fairly. There is a lot of reading and a quiz every single class period, so you HAVE to read. But the readings are usually enjoyable and not too long. If you read the book, you should do fine on the quizzes. Overall, she is such a sweet professor and I really enjoyed her class! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 3380 - Dr. Hoffman has her ups and downs. She's very, very sweet but an unorganized professor. Overall, she has an easy grading system: she uses pluses, but not minuses, so an A is a simple 90. Day-to-day, however, the class is harder to deal with. It's boring. Her classes are insufferable at times. You start out each class with a very detailed quiz -- make sure you read!! Online summaries often won't be enough. Don't miss class because you'll get a zero and she doesn't drop any. Then she rambles for the rest of the time, I don't know how she does it. I learned nothing from them. Sometimes you do group work, and it's fine. She has the quizzes, a midterm, a research project, and the final. The midterm and final are an essay you turn in the day of and the objective portion in-class. The research project is hell -- you can do an 8 page paper or a critical edition with 5 pages that you write, 20 pages of the author's text, and 40+ end notes. Your choice. Looking back on the class as a whole, the course is easy and you'll be fine with some effort...but it's not that fun during the semester. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 2304 American Lit. - The worst thing about American Lit with her is that you have a quiz every single class. Don't be late either, because she won't let you take the quiz. Most of the time you can do well on the quizzes by just sparknoting the reading. Her essays are great because they only have to be two pages in length, although she's picky about taking points off for grammar and formatting. Most of her reading selections are actually interesting. We had 2 tests - both with a fill in the blank, matching, and quote interpretation sections. She has you write your two page essay beforehand so you bring it in the day of the test. As long as you get all her hand outs and listen you'll be fine because she usually tells you what will be on the test. You can really tell she's got a passion for the literature too. Take her if you don't mind the quizzes every day! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Eng 3380 - She is fantastic! There are reading quizzes everyday, but if you do the reading, you will do fine! She's a fair grader. She's very passionate about early American literature! She's great! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2304 - Wonderful teacher! She reviews you before each test and helps out tremendously with your paper. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:American Lit - I have always hated reading, but that is not so after this class. Dr. Hoffman is AMAZING. The class is built so that everyone from slow readers, to literary geniuses can succeed. You have some reading due everyday and there are daily quizzes. They are really easy and you honestly could just scan the reading and do well. But the reading she chose was actually so interesting, so you wanted to read. She is so patient and her class is really interesting. She wants everyone to do well. The tests aren't bad AT ALL if you have read. I probably reviewed for 2 hours before each test, just going over plots and characters, and got A's and high B's on all of them. You have some papers to write but she grades very easy and fairly. You have a few small projects but those are also really easy, and kind of fun. Overall take this class! You will not regret it (especially when you find an A on your transcript!) - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2304 - Amer Lit - had a blast in this class. Not at all difficult, as long as you stay on top of the readings; they are really interesting, though, so I actually looked forward to them. The work itself is not super difficult, but there can be a lot of it. She's an English professor (duh) so proofread your papers before you turn it in. Yes, she's strict on MLA, but since I had a teacher like her in high school I knew how to do it. None of her expectations of students are unreasonable. They may be more than other professors have, but she's a great teacher and does a good job teaching a survey of American Lit. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - She is an okay teacher, but very random when it comes to grading. If you are a freshman I would not recommend taking her, she's convinced that no one in her class is already a good writer (especially boys). Like everyone else is saying, she takes off too many points for small, unimportant things that other teachers don't pay attention to. If you ask her for help on a paper, she will always insist it needs major changes. The people who do the best in this class are the ones who ask her for help the most and make her feel important. If you are used to writing papers the day before they are due, pick another teacher - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:American Lit - English is my least favorite subject. However, I actually really liked this class! Dr. Hoffman made this class a lot of fun! There is a lot of work. We had to write a one page reading response each class, but after a while, you get used to it. There is a midterm and a final. Overall, it is a great class. I highly recommend taking Dr. Hoffman! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - She is very exact with MLA formatting. I remember forgetting to change my header to times new roman, or forgetting to put it at size 12 font and she would take alot of points off my paper! Other than that shes a great teacher. Gives simple quizzes b4 every class based on reading that i never read and still got straight 100's on, and let you redo every paper at the end of the year. Take her! - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1302 - First of all, she told us that she showed one of her classes how easy it was for someone to put ratings on here and added one right then in class. Her adding ratings of herself should tell you something about her. Actually, overall this class was really easy and she is pretty nice. There are quizzes most days and if you just skim the reading you'll be fine. The papers are relatively easy. She will count off a lot for very little things. One of my papers my printer was completely aligned and the margin was .875 inches, not 1 inch. Everyone had a similar problem and gave them back to us, because they were our first paper, but said we would get a zero if it happened again. I thought that was a little ridiculous. Go to see her with your paper beforehand, because she said my paper would be a C+ and I ended up making a B+ with the changes she told me to do. Overall she’s not bad and I would probably take her again. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2304 - Great Professor!! This is one of the easiest classes that I have taken at Baylor and I enjoyed it on top of that. She doesn't assign very much reading for each class, but she does have a quiz for each class and she always has a bonus question on the quizzes which is really helpful. Don't miss class though or you get a zero for the quiz and she doesn't drop any. The books are interesting so if you read (don't do spark notes) and write down the quotes she puts up on the board then you will do great. I loved the way she did her tests too. She was have maybe 10 quotes where she wanted you to identify the author of the book that the quote came from, but she let you pick 7 of the 10 which was SO HELPFUL incase you weren't sure about some. Then she had some matching questions then the last part she gave you 5 or 6 more significant quotes from the books and she made you pick three to explain for a couple of sentences. Also, I am a science major and I HATE essays, but she doesn't grade the essays very hard. Then if you have perfect attendance or if you miss one class you get TWO points added to your final grade. Take HOFFMAN! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - This class was terrible. DO NOT take this course if you are not a freshman. She treats everyone like they are morons, grades with an odd rubric, and will not improve your writing ability. If I had turned in some of the papers that I wrote in this class to my high school teachers they would have hated them, but they earned an A in this class, because I followed her rubric. She takes forever to get papers back to you, and often makes dumb excuses as to why she couldn't grade them within 5 weeks or so. I got marked off 10 points on one paper because there was more than one space between my last name and the page number in the header of my paper. She is just ridiculous and you will be frustrated the whole way through. Do not take her. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:American Lit - Take Hoffman! She is FANTASTIC! She usually gives a quiz every class over the assigned reading (which is always on the syllabus) and if you don't read the quizzes are difficult, however if you do read (not intense reading..just skimming helps) they're simple. She sometimes drops quizzes, which is nice if you forget to read one day. Basically if you do the work she assigns her class is an easy A. There is a presentation project which isn't difficult. Tests are long (lots of writing) and short answer but if you know the material it's a breeze and she gives extra credit opportunities. AND she's super helpful and very nice! I don't ever talk to my professors or in class, but she is the one that I would if I needed anything. Just take her! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:American Lit - I really enjoyed this class. We always had interesting discussions and busywork was virtually non-existant. There is a lot of reading, naturally, seeing as it is a literature class, but the novels were all very enjoyable. She gave short quizes over the reading everyday and required short reading responses after the end of each novel, but other than that the grades came solely from our two tests and final. I aced all the tests simply by studying exactly what she gave us to study, it's as simple as that. She really makes herself available if you need extra attention and really loves what she teaches which makes the experience a lot more enjoyable. I highly reccomend this course! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:2304 - I had her for American Lit. she is super helpful. There was several novels we had to to read but what would you expect for an English class. She usually tries to pick books that are interesting for her students, we read Poe, Irving, Amy Tan, Twain and Hemingway just to name a few. Her test are short answers,FIB, and an essay, sounds like a lot but she would give out a review sheet and go through it with us. At the beginning of the semester, she gives a reading guide which makes reading the novels easier. She also gave daily quizzes, as to make sure that you read. Her class was very discussion based with the addition of notes about the author. For each novel, there was a reader's response which is basically a two page essay of what you got out of the reading. I loved this class, Dr. Hoffman is very approachable and helpful. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - She was a very friendly and entertaining professor! The daily quizzes got easier as the semester went on. I did not even read the textbook and I still managed to have a decent quiz average. There were homework readings for most class meetings except if there was a final draft of a paper due. She was always willing to help on papers during her office hours. Go visit her during her office hours to get help on your papers or just to talk to her. I did not get an A in her class because I blew off most of my papers to the nights before. I am definitely have always sucked at english but I managed a decent grade with little effort. I would take her again if I could for another english class. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1302 - Dr. Hoffman is an extremely nice woman and a very friendly teacher. Her workload isn't too heavy, especially since it could be a whole lot worse for a writing class. There were four papers due all semester; the first was an in-class essay that we all got A's on, and the other three had to be between 4 and 5 pages, which isn't bad at all. She tries to make the assignments fun, such as making you evaluate a movie in the theaters. I'll admit, I've always thought of myself as a good writer, but I had was struggling to scrape an A- on some of the assignments; she can grade a little tough. But weekly quizzes from the book should help boost your grade (I studied for half an hour- at most- before each test and had a quiz average of near 100, since it's possible to make a 110 on most quizzes), so you should be alright. And around Thanksgiving, you have to show her a journal that you've been keeping for the semester (roughly two journals a week, each one about a page single-spaced), which should be another easy 100. I think most kids that took her liked her and wanted her again for 1304. She's a good teacher. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - The last paper is about a movie that you go see. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1304 - She worked with me SOO much, she's the good stuff! - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:1304 - She is an okay professor. At the beginning of the semester there are quizzes each class over 15-80 pages of reading. The quizzes could have easy to remember questions or true/false about a direct quote from the book after 80 pages of reading. If you do not argue well, make sure you ask her for help, she is more than happy to read papers and tell you how they could be better. There are four papers, research paper, and a final (this semester it was take home). - Grade In Class:B
Comments:ENG 1304 - Hoffman is an average proffessor. She assigns a fair deal of busy work and grades a little rough at times. You do basically nothing in class just discuss. I put together my research notebook and final paper at the last minute and made a B+. The papers are fairly straightforward. This is an average class with an average professor: no surprises with Hoffman - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - I hate english, so I came into this class hating it already. But prof. hoffman was really nice, and most days we didnt do anythign in class. I would have made a better grade, but I didnt study for 1 quiz, which hurt me. Her papers arent bad, just boring to write. She grades fair, not to bad. If you dont want to work very hard and still get a B in the class, take her. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1302 - Ms.Hoffman's class wasn't too bad, it was a good class to boost my GPA. I don't think she was too difficult of a grader and english really isn't my subject. So if I got an A in that class, I think anybody could. We did have a quiz every Tuesday, and a paper due every Thursday, but I think a lot of the english classes we similar to that. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - She is my all-time favorite teacher here at Baylor. Her papers are really easy topics and usually broad enough where you can really write about something you care about. The grammar is boring stuff like nouns and how to elaborate, stuff most people should already know unless they are stupid. Her grammar quizes come from the headlines in the book chapters, and it requires less than 10 minutes of studying to ace it. 2 out of the first 4 papers you can revise. As long as your grammar is correct, you could write about almost anything and still get an A. She really tries to make the class fun by relating english to every day activities like, like you get to have a taste testing day in class and write a paper about a movie you saw. I would recommend in a heartbeat. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1304 - She is a really nice woman, but her expectations are a bit high. She grades papers in a strict manner, you get penalized on your grade for missing more than 2 classes , and you have quizzes constantly. The topics for the paper assignments are terrible, and you basically have to pull something out of your butt to make it all come together. She does let you re-write the first three papers if you don't do too hot, but so do all the other 1304 profs. If only psycho 1304 profs are left to take, choose her if she's available. However, there are a lot better profs to take than her as well. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Eng 1302 - First of all, I thought this class was pointless, so I probably wouldn't have liked any professor. However, she is not a very good teacher. She didn't explain things well and spent most of class time re-teaching the same things over and over again. I felt like I was back in high school, and it was probably the worst class I have taken here. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:1302 - She is actually a pretty cool lady. She is always available to help with papers. I found it very helpful to talk to her prior to turning in a paper just to get her inputs. She schedules the workload so that the beg. of the sem so the end is better. I do recommend taking her. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:ENG 1302 - I had her during my first semester at Baylor and I am pretty happy with her. The class was not very difficult and it was also not very hard to make B's on the papers (A's are considerably more out of reach for me, but I've never been that good of an English student). - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1302 - She's a great teacher even though she isn't available that often. As this is an English course, there's not much one can do to lessen the work, but she does try to accomodate for any problems and is willing to work step by step with you through your work with a happy countenance about herself. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:Hoffman is a great teacher who is very personable with her students. The class takes up alot of time, but that's b/c it's a research class. I definitely recommend her.
