*A 5 star workload is an easy workload; a 3 star is average; whereas a 1 star workload is extremely hard.
Comments:4306 - I would suggest not taking this class. He's a nice guy, but the class was just a lot. There is a test every week in this class, and although it's not the hardest, it really does require you to study and watch the videos for it. He also has mentioned that he is going to change the course from learning R to learning Python with Quizes before every class, and it all around just seems like it's going to be more work than it already is. If you have to take it, I think you will be able to get through it with an A if you're willing to put in work every week, but personally, I would not take this class again. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - Just take immunology or micrbio. This course has completely changed and it is much harder than before. Don't even get me started on the lab which is a shitshow. You will spend countless hours outside of lab completing group assigment worth very little of you lab grade. The lab grade is 70 percent a quiz you take in class. You have weekly exams and get 3 drops. Save drops towards the last 3 because those exams are very hard. I did not like the exams as sometimes the questions were very specific and you only have 15 questions so if you get a couple wrong..... Also exams are worth 70 percent. The final is a group exam you take outside and even that exam is very hard to get a 20/20. Overall just please listen to me and take another upper level bio. This class is no longer a easy class like the previous reviews have said. He dose post vids which are basically his lectures that are helpful. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:4306 - Wow. Please allow me to reassure individuals who have 0 previous knowledge in this computer science world (like me) - this was the BIGGEST blowoff course I have had the privilege of taking at Baylor. Other than the lab (which just make sure someone in your group or a friend is a BIMF major), this class was pretty much 0% work other than reviewing the provided notes two/one night before the weekly exam. Save the quiz drops for sure until the last three. The exams are super straightforward except for the final (it's brutal but its also a group exam). If you want a chill upper level elective, this is probably the best since no exams are cumulative. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:MGG - 1. watch the lecture videos 2. DONT USE UR DROPS TILL THE END the last few quizzes are BRUTAL bc ncbi sucks 3. just try. its easy to let the class go bc it feels too easy, but thats how (like me) youll miss the opportunity for an easy A. Then lab is tough but the TAs grade easy as long as ur trying, dont leave until u finish the lab bc no one wants to do it at home. u dont rlly need to pay attn during lecture but its good to. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:4306 Molecular Genetics - I'll be the honest one and say that this class was terrible. Yes, I got an A, but I had no idea what I was doing. I hate coding and have no interest in it, so luckily I had friends and made friends to carry me during lab and homework assignments. This classroom is a flipped classroom. His classes are a waste of time and they're so boring because everything you need to know is from the videos he posts. There are non-cumulative exams every week. It's so easy to miss questions and every exam is only 15 questions. You get 2 drop exams and 3 homework drops. The final exam is a take-home group final that was very difficult. It was hard, but luckily my team carried me. We barely had any idea how to do it. My best advice is to study as hard as you could in the beginning of the semester so you're not stressed over the final like how I was. The last few exams and the final are very difficult because it covers useless NCBI stuff. I can admit this class isn't as hard as your typical bio or chem class, but that doesn't mean you can slack in this class, especially for the weekly exams which always end up being on a Monday. There is no extra credit and he does not round an 89.9 to an A. Good luck. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIO 4306 - Molecular Genetics and Genomics. Fantastic Professor. Guaranteed to get a B or higher in this class if you put in the work. If you study well in the beginning, you will get an A in the class. The last 4 quizzes are rather difficult so use these as your 2 drops and you will be golden. This class helped me get an internship so you get what you put. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:4306/4106 - I cannot recommend this class and professor enough!! Please take Mol gen for an easy but useful upper level bio elective. Would recommend taking this your MCAT semester 10/10 because it isn't cumulative so you can leave most of the previous week's information behind each week. The lab is also really chill because the TA makes the assignments as easy to understand as possible and is willing to explain and help. The only thing I could be critical of is that sometimes the labs didn't line up with lecture but this is unavoidable and not that big of a deal. I would sign up to take another class with Dr. Kearney if I could, he's just the absolute sweetest! One thing to mention though, is you get out what you put into this class. Getting an A without coding anything is possible, but I think this is a great opportunity to dip your toes in coding in a comfortable bio environment, and I am very glad I did. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - The sweetest and most wholesome bio professor I've experienced. Makes something like coding (which seems very intimidating at first, and that I knew absolutely nothing about) very approachable. There's really not much more you could ask for in this class, weekly quizzes with no time limit that aren't cumulative, with 2 attempts each, worth a pretty big chunk of your grade (basically freebie), and weekly Monday exams which aren't cumulative, all based on the past week's online lecture videos that you can replay again and again to help study. Multiple weekly quiz and exam drops! Also, group final. The best. For studying, just focus on details and what he emphasizes in lecture examples and you will be fine, make flashcards or other active review sets, and find good labmates you can count on for the final, and you're golden. Have fun! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - I thought I would comment since all of the other reviews on here were not like my experience with Dr. Kearney. I took MGG in the summer 1 session and I have to say, he really sets you up to do well in this class. It is impossible to make lower than a B in this class. In the summer session we had a test every other weekday, however these were 15 questions each and the material was very little. His tests are very easy because they come straight from his videos. I am not a great student but this course was very doable for me. You do not have to have previous knowledge in coding to do well. A lot of the material was surface level biology. He is a very nice professor as well. Take this class!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - I did not like this man. This class is dumb. Unless you are planning to use R, or analyzing data, avoid this class at all cost. The weekly Saturday exams are so rude. He obviously does not want his students to get rest on the weekends. Does not offer extra credit. His tests were dumb. Happy I don't have to see this class ever again. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:3V90 - The sweetest prof and the best PI ever. He always has a smile on his face and he is an excellent teacher. He has created an amazing lab environment. I am so thankful for Dr. Kearney and the opportunity to work with him. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Biocomputing 3300 - I took Dr.Kearney's online biocomputing class during summer semester 1. This is the first time Baylor has offered it. Dr.Kearney is very organized and passionate about coding, and just wants you succeed. Since the class was online, I did not have to listen to a lecture but in all his videos he is funny and engaging. As for the class, I had no prior coding experience...I did not even know what it was. Dr.Kearney made the class great for beginners! It was kinda time consuming because it was only 5 weeks long but you should get an A as long as you watch his videos and read the book. The tests were via video chat, which is terrifying, but Dr.Kearney was patient and kind during them. If Baylor offers this class again take it!! and also take Kearney in anything if you have the chance!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - Though my grade doesn't reflect my opinion, I love this class and Kearney. This was my first senior level course and I surprisingly really enjoyed it. Kearney loves to help his students and is always there to talk/help. The comment below gives the basic layout of the course, but my suggestion is to find a study group. My lab class was really close and we studied/helped each other out and that really helped me throughout the semester. TAKE KEARNEY :) - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:4306 - Dr. Kearney is an amazing professor. He is incredibly helpful, available, and seeks to impart you with the knowledge and skills you need to be successful in any biology/bioinformatics-oriented career. If you have the chance to take his molecular biology course (or any of his courses, for that matter), I would definitely recommend that you do it. He was consistently available, incredibly helpful (both in and out of class), friendly, and understanding. He didn't assign a large amount of homework (as far as upper level Biology classes go), and his homework assignments took at most an hour. The homework assignments do wonders for you when it comes to understanding the material, and he puts them up ahead of time so you can do them whenever you are free. There were 3 MC exams (all of which were relatively easy––his goal is to have you understand what, why, and how) and 2 weekly homework assignments. I found that if you keep up with the homework (once again, this is easy), and put in some time studying a few days prior to the exam, you should be able to get the A. Overall, this was an awesome course and it taught me a lot, even if I don't pursue a career in research! One of the best classes I've taken at Baylor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - Dr Kearney is so amazingly nice and funny. He is a great professor and truly wants you to learn the material. All of the information he wants you to know are on his lecture notes, but man those lectures notes are so long. There is so much information jammed into 3-4 pages. The lab sucked, and if you can avoid this class, I would recommend it because the lab is so boring. I guess I would consider it an easy A if you know what's going on but I sure didn't. Good luck. - Grade In Class:C+
Comments:BIO 4306 - Prof Kearney is an amazing professor. Always excited and helpful and ready to answer questions. Make no mistake though, this course is no cakewalk. There are very few assignments but the reading workload is high as there is a ton of material to cover. He presents you with outlines that are really helpful, use them. Go to his review sessions, ask questions. Wonderful professor, difficult course. - Grade In Class:C
Comments:4306 - This professor is just plain awesome. If and ONLY IF you care about biology then you MUST take this class. Very technical class; tests are over a lot of material, especially the COMPREHENSIVE FINAL; but he provides great review guideline sheets, Dr. Kearney really likes interacting with students, and if you are ever confused (which happens often with the hard material) don't be afraid to ask him! One of my favorite professors at Baylor. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIO 4303 - One of the nicest professors I've ever had. He's simply a great guy that loves to help and will answer any question you have. This class was basically just a lot harder than I expected, probably because I hate genetics and haven't and won't take it. There's some crossover from biochemistry, so it helps if you've taken it or take it concurrently. The hardest thing for me was that the material seems to be pretty much a bunch of random facts thrown together... There is no logical progression of material like other classes, just random bits of information that aren't really connected to each other. But that's more about the class than the professor. He's a great guy and good lecturer and I would take him again for sure, but probably not for biotechnology because I hate that crap. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:BIO 4303 - Dr. Kearney is a VERY down to earth guy. I took this biotechnology course thinking it was going to be a little more interesting than it actually was. He understands that the material can be horribly boring, so he cracks jokes and makes sure to keep the class awake. He livens up the material and really presents all the technologies as major scientific breakthroughs - which they pretty much are. There were 3 exams 19% each, a presentation 12%, a quiz 6%, and a final 25%. The exams weren't terribly hard as he gave us chapter outlines and you 'memorize' the concepts/pathways/applications/etc. The exams do, however, cover A LOT of material. I'm talking 5-8 chapters being tested on one exam. If you can handle a couple of late nights before each exam as well as the final, you'll do well (A or B). He does give plus grades and he attempted to give minuses but Baylor hasn't implemented that yet. GREAT professor, INTERESTING course, and he's always willing to sit down and work with anyone. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:BIO 4306 - Compared to other upper level biology courses, this class is relatively easy. As long as you complete the study guide in its entirety, you should score well on all of the exams. How well you complete the study guide correlates with how well you will do on the exams. He curves heavily and offers substantial extra credit assignments. Dr. Kearney is also a pretty nice guy. Take him! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - I loved MolGen! Kearney is an excellent professor with an amazing personality. He genuinely cares that you as a student are learning the information. He post outlines of every chapter on Blackboard and has review sessions the day before each of the three term exams. I wish I had not waited until my senior year to take a class with him because I would have taken him again. Highly recommended! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIO 4306 Mol Gen - He is a good teacher and funny (in a corny and unpredictable kind of way) If you memorize the outlines you will be fine. The only thing is that the outlines are deathly long. But if you stay on top of the outlines as the lectures go, you should be fine. The test are strictly multiple choice with usually about 45 questions. He also gives a nice bell curve. Extra credit is available as well. If you can stand the bore of completing the outline, you'll do fine - Grade In Class:B
Comments:Molgen - Excellent prof! Always there when you need him and very funny! ALL you have to do is study his outlines and your on your way for an A! He also gives you extra credit opportunities, if you need them. TAKE HIM!!! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - Kearney's brilliant. Kearney's from California. Kearney's always smiling, and you never know what the hell he might say next, but it's bound to have you rolling. Enough said. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 and 4303 - Kearney is probably one of the best teachers I've had so far. Not only does he know the material very well, he also brings plenty of humor to the class. If you can, try to take his Biotechnology (4303) course, which is a very interesting course over the applications of molecular biology. For both Mol Gen and Biotech, Kearney makes great reading notes for you to follow along with in your book. The tests come straight off these notes he gives you, thus making his tests extremely easy and simple. The only problem I think people have with Mol Gen is the amount of material on each test, but if you can keep up or have excellent memory, then it shouldn't be a problem. He also gives a pretty substantial curve to each test grade, which doesn't seem very necessary due to the simple test questions. I think the best thing to prepare for his courses is to look over the book material once and understand the basic concepts, then go back over Kearney's reading notes to pick up all the specific details. Overall, definitely take this guy; Kearney is awesome. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - One of the best teacher's I have had at Baylor. He is really nice and takes the time to learn all the students' names. His teaching style is fantastic and he gives quite a bit of extra credit. The class is tough but it was definitely enjoyable. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - Dr. Kearney is one of my favorite professors at Baylor so far. The class covers a TON of material so you have to make sure and keep up with studying but he explains the material very well and he gives the tests a pretty good curve. He also offers extra credit throughout the semester that can help boost your grade. It is a hard class, but you get out what you put into it. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - Dr. Kearney is great. Corny jokes, but you have to at least smile for the effort. There is so much info to learn and the final is cumulative and worth 30% of the final grade so that is scary. Still, very helpful, will write letters of recommendations/evaluations for premed/predent students after meeting and chatting for a little bit. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4306 - Nice guy, busts out with pretty retarded comments here and there that crack us up and keep us awake, and the tests are fair (he also gives a decent curve for all of them). You honestly don't have to read the book, just follow your study guides. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIO 4306 Mol Gen - Dr. Kearney is great! There is a TON of material to learn for each test and the final is cumulative. The class is really not that bad if you keep up with the reading and start studying at least a week before the test. There are some extra credit opportunities and all the tests are curved substatially so the final grades are not curved at all (89.9999 is a B+)Dr. Kearney is a very nice man and honestly cares about each and every one of his students. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:BIO 4306 - You will learn a lot. However, there is a lot to learn. The tests are hard because of the volume of material covered on each one. Be prepared to start studying a week in advance. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:4306 - He is a nice guy and gives some extra credit opportunities. Also he curves every test and even the final...BUT..not your final average. If your grade ends up being an 89.9, it's a B+. That kind of stinks. I found his class to be so incredibly boring!! He cracked some jokes every once in while...that's the only reason I didn't fall asleep. He does hold reviews sessions and is very helpful. His tests aren't easy, but the curves are nice. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:BIO 4306 - This guy is a great teacher and I would definately recommend him. His class is actually useful although some of the subject is confusing. The only problem I really had in his class was that sometimes there were stuff on the test that I didn't know was supposed to be on there (in other words, specifically ask him what pages the test covers - this happened to me twice). He gives an absolutely huge curve just in case you're wondering. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Molecular Genet - dr. kearney is a great teacher... very helpful and enthusiastic work hard! - Grade In Class:A
Comments:Dr. Kearney is one of the finest men I have met at Baylor. Such a geniune heart and love for teaching and what he does. An ultimate geek and it shows in the way he just falls in love with the material and how enjoyable he can make his class with his funny anecdotes. There is a lot of stuff to learn and you probably won't get an A without reading most of the material, but the class is very doable. Overall, AWESOME professor!
