Comments:CHE 3331 - As a transfer student, this course was a very rude awakening to the expected course load at Baylor. Dr. Kane is a great guy, he even offered to show up outside office hours, but it's mainly because the whole class asked him to. I have had problems trying to set up office hours because he rarely reads my emails, but up front he can be quite engaging. His lectures would have been helpful if the exams matched what he taught in class. Basically expect everything he teaches to be 3x harder on the exam. I think I would've learned more from actually focusing on the textbook rather than listening in lecture. Definitely READ the TEXTBOOK though! Further Notes: I was lucky to get a C+, I ended up with I think a 50+ on his exam, and maybe a low 70 - high 60 but still passed. One last thing: I'd just READ the BOOK and do the practice problems on it if I were you.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:3331 - [Although the semester is not done yet, I am projected to receive in A+ in Kane\'s Organic 1 class to give context]. Kane is not a good teacher by any means; his teaching style is mainly a review session, even when introducing topics. Kane would be useful for people who have studied (or self-studied Organic, like myself) the course previously, as a student with previous knowledge would excel in his class. For most students, organic chemistry is entirely new beast to tackle, especially with foreign concepts to inorganic chemistry, and if I hadn\'t self-studied organic chemistry, I would be in a much worse position in his class. His work load is minimal, which is terrible for organic. Organic chemistry requires rigorous amounts of practice over a period of time to understand it and not get sick of it; Kane does not give many homework assignments, but he does post all his previous test for past decade or so, so for test-preps, they are pretty neat. The tests are not really hard (well, that\'s for me because of my peculiar circumstance), but they often can be vague, so you must know your material. Another note on the tests is that they are all free response, and he marks it out of a high mark band, so he gives a lot of partial credit. His lectures are primarily supplements to the textbook (Klein 4th Edition), which frankly is a poor textbook except for some unique reactions. Regarding the category of helpfulness, Kane doesn\'t really talk to students unless the student provides an insightful question regarding topics. Depending on the student, this is really hit or miss. From what I have heard, the better professors for Organic at Baylor are Hodson, Zinke, and Pinney (the last for Reaction Mechanism-based learners). Another note: He does random quizzes at the beginning of class, which often are easy, but they can become the death of you if you miss class because if you arrive late, he will not allow you to take the quiz. Although Kane seems like a nice person, he doesn\'t have a good teaching method, especially for an introductory organic chemistry course. (60–63/100)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3331 - Look, bottom line is DO NOT TAKE HIM! Dr. Kane is a wonderful person but he lacks in his teaching abilities. If you don't put all your focus into teaching yourself and going to tutoring you will fail (like I did). The tests are God-awful. You have to basically memorize every mechanism in order to even write an answer. The only thing that helped me even comprehend what was going on was the textbook. If you have previous knowledge in ochem then I'm sure you'll do fine, but if not this is not an introductory course!!  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:3332 - Like the previous review said, Dr. Kane is clearly primarily here for research, and it shows in his teaching abilities. Outside of the classroom, he's a nice guy, but Baylor has many better Ochem professors to take. He teaches concepts at a very basic level and his exams are way more difficult. Even the book, which has more detailed problems than what he does in class isn't as difficult as his exams. Thankfully, he gives a generous curve and a lot of partial credit, which I think kept my grade up. Sapling is a grade booster, so be sure to get that done on time and do as well as you can. Another thing that I didn't like is that during the second unit, he bounced around from chapter to chapter, going to one, then another, and back to a previous one. It was extremely unorganized and somewhat confusing, but I was able to get through it. He also seems to have a low tolerance for students that do not understand it as well. If a student was confused and asked a question, he would answer in a very annoyed tone. This was also a problem in office hours, as I would go to office hours trying to get clarification on a sapling/book problem, and I'd say that I didn't understand a certain problem and asked if he could explain it, he'd just be like "well what's your question?" Ochem is something he understands really well since it's his profession and doesn't seem to understand why an undergrad learning ochem for the first time is confused. The SI was really helpful and reinforcing concepts, so definitely take advantage if you have an SI. His class is doable, but definitely not a first choice professor. I was supposed to take Zinke for this class, but COVID changed everything and Kane ended up teaching this class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 3332 - Sigh... Dr. Kane is a good guy. You can tell he likes what he does but is here for research more than anything. I love ochem and this class kind of dulled it for me. On the bright side, he gives very generous curves on the exams (like a 16 point curve on one). I took it during the COVID semester so his office hours were online. But he had very frequent office hours and put them late at night so that all students could make it to them. Kane's exams are significantly harder than what he teaches in class or what is in the book practice problems. My SI helped a lot. I took Zinke for ochem 1 and can confidently say Zinke is a better ochem teacher overall. Take Zinke if you can but Kane isn't horrible.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:O Chem 1 - I took Kane fall of 2020, and looking at the reviews I guess I am a bit of an outlier outlier but I actually really enjoyed Kane. Here's how I got an A, I would read the chapter and take my own notes before class, then during class all you have to do is follow along and the textbook is so well written that you are able to teach yourself before class and his lectures are more like review or clarification. I also went to almost every SI session, Ally is the freaking GOAT and is so awesome and helpful. Use sapling as practice and make sure you get an A on it because it counts as an exam which really helps. Also, he curves his exams which was very helpful, I got a B or C on the first exam but after that, I studied much harder and studied the way I described above and never got below an A on any other exam except the final because I didn't need it. I think he also drops an exam or counts your final twice to replace your lowest exam but yeah.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHE 3331 - Organic chemistry is hard stuff. I had never received a C in a class before O chem, but this was it. I take responsibility for part of it. But Dr. Kane was not a great professor. His lectures were very disorganized, and his notes are hard to follow. We also did not complete all the chapters in o chem that we were supposed to, which made it harder. But the worst part is he was kind of rude. I took him for o chem during the fall semester. At the same time, my family was also planning my cousin's wedding, the date of which was set in the middle of finals. I was a bridesmaid in the wedding. The date was set before the semester even started and before we knew the finals schedule. The second the semester started, I checked my finals schedule to see if I needed to move any finals so that I could get that taken care of. Unfortunately the o chem final was the day of the wedding. Literally the first couple weeks of class I emailed him to let him know what was going on. I had to email him three times before he responded saying he would be willing to work with me after the third exam in november. I reached out again after the third exam multiple times before I could get a response and was able to schedule my final on a separate time. Finished the class. Got my grade. Fine. However the next semester, he was a substitute for the new o chem lab lecturer and was discussing attendance for lab. And he said, "Don't plan on being in a wedding or anything during lab because then you'll miss lab." Calling out my situation in the middle of the entire B110 lecture room. It was incredibly rude of him and extremely unprofessional. I had thought despite being a tough professor that he was a nice guy, but that experience made me realize he is a very rude man. Would not take again.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:3331 - Organic Chemistry I- Kane is a funny guy and makes jokes from time to time. I enjoy him as a person however, I wasn't really fond of his teaching methods. His lectures lacked in structure and organization. Once he finishes the lecture, he's done. He doesn't post his notes afterwards on Canvas for his students to revisit. Throughout the semester, he just gave me a sense of unpreparedness. His exams were on another level for me. Sapling(homework software) was baby food compared to the exams. Tests are not multiple choice. He does pop quizzes. Please, save yourself and take another professor. Do not take him  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:3331 - He does not teach. All he does is scribble on the whiteboard. He is also very arrogant and expects you to know everything about ochem before coming to his office hour. Very demeaning character and makes you feel stupid for asking questions. He thinks he's really cool and hip, and wheres tie dye shirts everyday. Dont be fooled. Do not take him. Ochem is already hard as it is.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3331 - He is a terrible professor and here is why: He does not teach he only reviews so if you don't learn it before class you really do not know what is going on. He Jumps a lot he'll start with ch 5 then starts talking about ch 6 then goes back to ch 5 then jumps to ch7, basically, it's very difficult to follow his notes (which btw are just resonance drawing no letters at all for description) so notes are useless. His grading makes no sense at all like one test has a total value of 400 the next one can be 580 and the next on 330 no one knows only him. During office hours he does not really explain things just tells us to read it in the book. He did not teach ch 12 and 13 which are needed for ochem 2. Twice he did not show up to class and his SI had to teach (who btw is horrible was constantly late to SI, very unprepared, and a bit sexist) This man is not worth it, he is a good chemist just does not know how to teach. DO NOT TAKE HIM  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3331 - Dr. Kane is a pretty chill gu, however I would say that i he is quite difficult to follow in class. At times when he is reviewing a concept, he tends to talk about about it and then move on to another question without finishing the first. I do feel like if you do stay on top of things and can comprehend his notes, you can definitely make an a in his course.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:CHE 3331 - Dr. Kane is a really chill guy that likes to throw in puns and jokes in class. He genuinely wants you to learn some organic chemistry and will say over and over not to stress over grades. He has quizzes, sapling, three tests and one final. 1) quizzes: They can be pre-announced, pop-quizzes, partner/group/class quizzes, or take home quizzes. Sometimes he will grade them and sometimes you get a 100 for just turning one in, you won't know unless you check it in class or he posts it in Canvas. He will drop a few. 2) Sapling: There is an assignment per chapter due a week after it is assigned. They are usually 30-40 questions each. Done correctly and in a timely manner will be grade boosters. He will drop the lowest grade. 3) Tests: Free-response tests, but he does give partial credit and one or two questions as extra credit. They are hard tests and he understands, so he curves appropriately. But he only curves so students are not stressing over grades and instead focused on learning organic chem, and stresses that students should continue learning the material. You can go to up to two chemistry guest speakers as extra credit. He also just recently opened another extra credit opportunity. Again, he does not want students staying up late at night stressing over grades. He will also drop either your sapling or quiz grade or one of your test grades, which can also be your final.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Organic Chemistry - DON'T TAKE DR. KANE! He's a really chill guy, you'll never have homework BUT HIS TESTS ARE INSANE. It's not even fair how ridiculously hardly his tests are. His tests aren't multiple choice, so he expects you to know ALL of the material down to the most specific detail. Organic Chemistry is hard enough as it is, but it's 10x harder with Dr. Kane. Take another professor and save yourself.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2013-03-27

Comments:3332 - Dr. Kane teaches the reactions on the smallest, most basic molecules in class, but expects you to know how to show the reactions on very complicated molecules on his tests! The workload is to do online chemistry homework which takes a couple hours per chapter. He also gives quizzes the first few months of class so definitely show up for them. Make sure you do the online homework and show up for quizzes because those add up to a test grade, and believe me that will probably be the only good test grade you have. In my class of 62 people only 1 person got an A and the majority of the class got a D. If you can take someone else, do it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:lab - He's a really nice and helpful guy. I haven't had him for an actual class, but I've worked with him in his lab. He's good at explaining things and I would have liked to take Kane for his class, but I liked my ochem 1 professor so I stuck with him for the second semester. If I can I'm definitely going to take him for an upper level class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-11-12

Comments:CHE 3331 - Funny dude, but maybe too funny. You have to teach yourself if you can't make it to SI sessions. Try to go to his office hours as much as possible. He missed out a chapter at the end and he is holding a one-day "crash" course this spring semester to compensate.. thanks?  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2010-01-07

Comments:3331 - Dr. Kane's class was not great at all. He's really smart, but he can't really teach all that he knows. He has a very laid-back personality and tries to crack jokes during class. The only reason I passed this class was because I had to get a tutor and study for hours and hours. Don't take him unless you want to teach everything to yourself or get a tutor.   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2009-12-17

Comments:CHE 3332 - Kane was a GREAT teacher! I was worried at first, but he is so interesting in class! He is kind of a hippie, but that's what makes him really cool. He always had help sessions, more than enough, if you wanted to go to them. He gave a lot of quizzes, but that usually helped your grade. After a test, if people didn't do well on a certain section, he would give a quiz on that section (after telling you a day before) that would add to you grade. Honestly, there is no reason anyone should fail this class. There were more than enough opportunities to learn the material and get help/extra credit.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-07-30

Comments:3331 - I think Dr. Kane is very nice and sweet. His tests ares totally so much harder than other professors, but in the way that he's harder makes us want to learn more or try harder. This is why I got an A in his class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-03-11

Comments:3331 - Kane was a horrible teacher....from what I hear he failed 40% of my class....I honestly don't know how I managed a B. All he does in class is sit there and draw pictures, basically you have to learn from then book. His tests are mostly mechanisms and they are a lot harder than the level at which he teaches....probably the only thing I got out of this class was how to name compounds, and now I'm behind in o chem 2.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2006-03-01

Comments:3332 - The only reason you should ever take Kane is if Klausmeyer's class fills up (which it will fairly quickly). He is an awful lecturer. You could write down everything he says and draws on the projector, but when you try to study for a test, your notes are useless. You need to read and reread the textbook to do well. Everyone of his tests is cumulative, and they progressively get harder because each one has more and more material on it. Alot of the questions on the tests are absolutely rediculous, but he does give partial credit. Also, he gives an extra credit opportunity, even though it doesn't help very much. And this year he gave the national standardized ACS test as the final, which was stupid because you have absolutely no idea how to study for it. He is really goofy sometimes, but I think its just an effort to get us to like him.   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:3331 & 3332 - Bob is a fun guy. He races motorcycles and listens to new-age and folk music. His lectures are very clear and he does go at a slow pace, but his tests are much more advanced than the level of his teachings. They're also VERY cumulative, so keep something up to review older solvents. 3332 HINT: He loves Sn1/Sn2 & E1/E2 reactions - it should be the first thing you review before a new exam  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-04-05

Comments:CHEM 3331 - I'm not sure why all these people like Dr Kane. I mean he's not completely aweful but he's the worst ochem prof in the department. Its not that he's that tough in class(its fairly easy to pass) He's just not a very good lecturer. He doesn't seem to care much about teaching(just research) and he's just got this kind of arrogant attitude about him when you ask him questions..... makes you feel dumb. I wasn't a big fan, but if you do like him and want to take him.... don't worry, his section is always the last one full so you'll definately get in. Apperently I'm not alone in my opinion of him.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2005-02-11

Comments:3331 - I liked the fact that he gave extra credit opportunities, and some free/easy quizzes. There are recommended homework problems he gives. I found it helpful to go to the weekly Review Sessions that the TA gives. He mostly gives a practice exam which can be quite similar to the actual exam, except that sometimes he puts some surprising questions on the exam. Make sure you read every part of the book that will be covered on the exams. He sometimes asks questions that can be answered by reading a certain paragraph of the book. He gives weekly quizzes. His exams include fill in the blanks, drawings, sometimes mulitiple choice. It is important to really learn the stuff, because guessing will NOT work on his exams.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-12-16

Comments:3332-Organic II - Bob is great. He has a very relaxed teaching style and always goes out of his way to further answer anything that is unclear. Despite his laid back demeanor, he always comes prepared to teach and to teach well. Lets be honest I may not be the smartest kid on the block and honestly all I did was study the night before the exam for a couple of hours and I still got a C in the class. He is a great teacher and I recommend him highly. His pace (very slow--covered 4 chapters less than every other teacher) and his desire just to have fun make a rather boring subject interesting.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2004-05-08

Comments:3331 - AWEFUL, AWEFUL, AWEFUL. Do not take him unless you can figure out Organic Chemistry from the book. Do not listen to him when he says your doing fine because your not.   - Grade In Class:F

Date: 2004-04-30

Comments:CHE 3331 - I really enjoyed Kane as a person and he kept me awake and interested in class. He makes it so that you can drop your entire quiz average, or any one of the exams (including the final). His tests are harder because they arent multiple choice, but they aren't impossible. He gives extra credit opportunities throughout the semester, and you can earn up to one point added on to your final grade.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2004-01-12

Comments:3331 - I thought Dr. Kane was a great professor!!! He made the class fun and went at a good pace. His tests aren't too bad if you study. I would recommend him!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2003-12-29

Comments:3331 - Dr. Kane is a very nice and laid-back guy, but unfortunately this does not make for the best class. He goes very slow and is repetitive so that if you learn things fairly quickly you lose interest in class. His tests are fairly easy as long as you’ve done the homework and understand the concepts generally.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2003-12-11

Comments:3331 - Kane is a really fun person, but as for his class, his tests are pretty difficult and he grades pretty hard. I would recommend taking Klausmeyer instead.  - Grade In Class:C
