Comments:HIS 4329 - I can understand that the class is going to be harder because it was online in the first place, but I literally dedicated 90% of my time to this class this past semester. I neglected my work in other classes in order to try and get an A on quizzes (which rarely succeeded). Rust's class was structured like so: a very in-depth audio powerpoint presentation, detailed quizzes, reading, about a week of student presentations (all via Zoom), three tests, and a major project. Honestly, I cannot tell you a single thing I learned in that class. I did well on the project and on the tests, since his tests were essay-based and more big-picture than his quizzes were, and that was the only reason I managed to pull off an A. He's not a bad prof and I didn't hate him, he's just really, really hard, even for BIC students.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4332 - Dr. Rust is a kind old German man who is passionate about history and his students. He is always available to help in his virtual office hours. He has been at Baylor for over thirty years and knows a lot about the university and how it has changed, for better or for worse. He has a pretty monotone voice, but you get used to it. In terms of his classes, the readings can quickly pile up, especially if you don't spread them out in advance. The quizzes are difficult, but as long as you do the readings and pay attention to interesting minor details you should do well. The hardest part of this class was the small window of time to complete the quizzes and exams. 60 mins for a two-essay, 10 quote ID exam is stressful. 3 mins for a 5 question quiz is brutal. The demography project, in place of a research paper, was very time consuming, especially in the early stages. I would recommend completing his class projects as soon as possible, considering they are assigned at the beginning of the semester. He grades really easily, which is a big plus! I would have taken him again if he had in-person courses in the Spring.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - I am taking this class all online and it is definitely a decent amount of work. Nothing that is unbearable though and I am not a top notch student. The only thing that is annoying are the three books you have to read. You have to read a 600 page book within a week and it is something else. I would recommend this class, it is easy.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - Professor Rust is both fully passionate and knowledgeable about what he's teaching. I'm not a history major so honestly, going into this class, I thought it would be one that I didn't have to pay attention in and could breeze out of there with an A without any work. That changed within the first week. The class is formatted in a powerpoint style lecture (he posts the outlines on canvas so you can print them out and literally just write out the things he says while teaching), there's a research essay that you have all semester to work on (time consuming but not bad at ALL), weekly quizzes from the textbook reading, map quizzes, 2 exams, and the final (not cumulative). He is clear on how he wants you to do the class and gives you resources to help you succeed. Regarding the tests, he gives a long list of short answers questions (try and go over them/brainstorm) and a list of 100 IDs. He chooses several of these short answer questions and you have to answer 10/15 of the IDs. The key to succeeding in this class is reading the assigned textbook pages (not just skim, literally read), go over the study questions (week of test), and write out the definitions for the IDs. The tests are not hard if you do what I stated because essentially, it's like you have the test. Do what he says to do because it's not busy work, it all serves a purpose. An A is literally so achievable because he wants you to succeed! You just have to put in the effort and earn it, which isn't hard whatsoever! 100% take him if you can, he gives a kind vibe, is available when you have questions, and really knows what he's teaching. I had this class at 8am, am not a morning person, and yet I still really enjoyed the structure of the class and Professor Rust.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 1307 - I would not recommend taking Dr. Rust. While he is an interesting man, he is not a very good teacher. You will be quizzed and tested over the textbook readings, but he will never ever talk about the textbook readings in class. He once lectured about Napoleon for three straight classes and then we were quizzed and tested over the industrial revolution, which had nothing to do with Napoleon. He makes you read three separate books of his choosing, and his tests and surprise reading quizzes are very hard. For tests, he gives you a "guide" which just includes 300 different terms, names, dates, and locations which you need to memorize, and then he'll choose 15 of them and you'll have to short answer define them, as well as two essay questions. I ended up dropping the class, as this was the hardest class I was taking and ended up failing. I was also taking chemistry, christian heritage, and biology, yet this world history class was the hardest class I was taking. Choose someone else.  - Grade In Class:DROP

Comments:HIS 4331 - DO NOT TAKE DR RUST. He is a nice man, but his teaching style is awful. He just leaves one slide on the screen and rambles. Notes become incoherent because he moves from one topic to another too quickly. He doesn't even write anything on the board. He picks the most BORING books that he can find. His quizzes are extremely hard because he picks minute details from the readings to ask about. The exams are impossible because the essays are so specific. There is a huge project which takes a lot of time to do. Just save yourself and take someone else for your European requirement.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:1307 - Dr. Rust is a wonderful teacher who is very insightful. I had his class as a MWF 8am and i was always late, but never counted tardy. He is very understanding and respectful… he knows that we can get busy but still expects the most from his students… i suggest reading the books because they are interesting, however, if you don't, he goes over them in good detail. Overall, the class was difficult, but Dr. Rust was very helpful in teaching and explaining… make notecards for the terms he gives you and start studying for exams very early… the tests are 2 essays (he gives you a list to study from) and about 15 Identification terms, it's a real bear, but they are graded very fairly (I've actually considered taking mine back because i thought they were too high) Great professor! would totally take him again!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:4329 - I absolutely loved my Renaissance/Reformation class with Dr. Rust! He is a wonderful professor with a tremendous gift for teaching. His lectures were always engaging, and I never once had trouble paying attention in class. He gave two tests, which consisted of 10/15 IDs and two essays (you have two options for each essay), and a non-cumulative final, which was the same format as the other two tests, except that it had an additional essay and a map section. He also has each student write a 10-12 page paper on a specific area of the Scientific Renaissance, which, though challenging, is very interesting. Additionally, he gives 12 quizzes on the readings over the course of the semester, but he drops the lowest 4. I would highly recommend any history class with Dr. Rust - he really knows his stuff, he\'s a great professor, and he\'s a truly delightful person with an amazing German accent!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - Professor Rust is a very delightful man, and I really like him as a person. As a professor, however, I am not his biggest fan. The lectures are interesting and the four books that are required are not too bad, but where the course really goes wrong are the exams. The exams are pulled from 150 or so terms which will be in the form of 10 ID questions. All of these terms are extremely obscure, and from my experience, most of them are never mentioned in the lecture or readings. The worst parts of the exam, though, are the essays. He gives you a sheet with around 25 essay prompts that could possibly be similar to the two or three that you will have to write on the exam. It just seemed like he had us know so much stuff for these ridiculous exams that he might as well have just told us to be familiar with every historical aspect of a given three centuries or so. If you want to work your butt off, and maybe get a decent grade, take him, but if you have other important classes going on, I would advise you to avoid him.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1307 - Rust is seriously the sweetest old man. He truly loves what he teaches, and if that is what your looking for, then take him. But non-history majors, you may not want to take him. The class is just him talking about a few slides the whole time, and the test reviews are insanely long but you are only tested over like 10 questions from the 130 question review. Its a ton of preparation and is extremely time consuming. Sweet man though.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1307 - Dr. Rust is a really great professor. He likes what he's teaching and it shows. The class itself is a lot of work, but it's not the same old history class you've had over and over and over. I usually just skimmed the chapters and would wing it on the quizzes. For the tests, I made flashcards for every single ID. It took a while, but was so worth it when I could breeze through that section on the tests. That gives you a little wiggle room in case your essays aren't great. He offered extra credit opportunities when I took him, which is always nice. And, added bonus: I could answer way more Jeopardy questions after this class because a lot of the show is history-based and I actually retained what I learned in class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4329 - Rust is a beast. He is my favorite history professor at Baylor. He definitely knows what he is talking about when he lectures and you will LEARN history. He gives quizzes which made me do the reading, which was helpful because I wouldn't have otherwise. You will either have a research paper or a big project. I had a paper, and if you do a good job and are interested in your subject, you will rock this class. You can go talk to him anytime and he really wants his students to succeed. Take 'im.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - Dr. Rust is a really nice man who's really interested in History. His German accent is so delightful that I didn't mind him saying "uh" every other word until the end of the semester. You don't really need to do the reading if you pay attention to the lecture, but the book is helpful for the vocabulary IDs which are inevitably on every test. Also, his lectures are important because they provide everything for the essay questions--which suck. The exam essay topics include about 4 different questions each, and if you forget about one you're penalized big time. He is, however, an engaging lecturer. I didn't read any of the outside books, but he discusses them in class and you can pretty much write the exam essays based on that. Also, the research paper seems like a joke because the way it's arranged isn't very cohesive, but it's easily graded, I think.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:HIS 4331 - BIG project, your a captian and you have to navigate using cordinates and wind patterns. 3 test using 15 IDs you pic 10 and then 2-3 essays  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:HIS 1307 - He has been the best professor I have had at Baylor so far!!!! He brings history to life and gives Americans a different side of history. A more European view. He has several extra credit opportunities and drops several quiz grades. His grading is extremely fair. If you read the textbook(which isn't much) and do what he says to prepare for the tests, you can make an A. Take him if you have the chance. I wish I could take him again!!! Good luck.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - Dr. Rust is amazing. He is so interested in his work and really knows what he is talking about. He is a good teacher and makes the workload doable. He is really funny when he gets excited. I don't want to make his class sound easy because it wasn't but it was worth the work and he made the work easy to do. There is one paper and three tests including the final. There are four books for outside reading but they are relevant and interesting. I'd say take Rust if you can.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - The rating below gives an excellent description of the class load. He is not an easy teacher, nor an entertaining one, but you will learn a lot in his class. If you do the work and don't get behind you will do well. My only complaint is that he often loses track of time and doesn't get to everything-but if he doesn't then he won't make it an essay question on the test. Really, really nice guy. Be prepared to do a lot of work, but you will learn a lot in return.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4329 - Dr. Rust is an incredible teacher. He is a very nice man who loves the subject and I guarantee you will learn more in this class than you ever thought possible. He is very helpful, and he gave us his phone number and he responds to e-mails quickly. You do have to do your reading, but most of it is very interesting. There are 12 5 question quizzes, of which he takes the highest 8. They are typically fill in the blank with an occasional multiple choice question (he asks the questions orally and you write down the answer). There are 2 tests with 15 IDs (you pick 10 to do) which are sometimes a little random (if you take good lecture notes and do the reading you will recognize them) and 2 essays (typically 2 or 3 choices to pick from for each one). The final is the same on IDs, has 3 essays, and a map. There is also a 10-12 page research paper/presentation. This may sound like a lot, but it is spread out, so you never get too overwhelmed unless you put off doing what you need to until the last minute. Dr. Rust is not out to get you when grading your work, and he will give you as many points as possible. A word of advice, don't spend too much time answering IDs on the test. As long as you demonstrate you know what they are, you're good. Spend more time on the essays. If you're going to take a history class TAKE DR. RUST. You will not regret it.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-05-09

Comments:HIS 4331/4329 - Dr. Rust is great. The class goes like this: three exams (including final), some sort of project (paper or map work) and 12 reading quizzes (of which he drops 4). You MUST do your reading to get an A in this class, as the quizzes are often fairly difficult and the tests have a lot of material from the reading on them as well. You will learn a massive amount of history in his classes, and he's very helpful. Take him, you won't regret it (unless you're lazy/don't like reading).   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BICWCII - He's a sweet man with a nice German accent. He can get pretty boring sometimes, but he really loves what he does. He's always more than willing to help you, so I definitely recommend taking him.   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:4331 - Pretty easy teacher, he gives a somewhat entertaining project instead of the term paper...only thing is his short answer questions on the test are completely random things we hardly talked about but don't sweat it...take this teacher if you can  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - This is a great class. Dr. Rust really knows his stuff. There are 3 exams, two normal and a third that counts as the final. They have 15 IDs, out of which you pick 10 to define and 2 essays. He gives a big list of essay prompts before the tests, though, so I usually outline one from each topic and I'm good to go. The final has 3 essays. I made flashcards for all the IDs, which takes a lot of time but are definitely worth it. The only homework is usually about 10 pages of reading over which he gives 12 pop quizzes throughout the year (4 per test). There are 3 map exercises, which are just like basic geography labels (find this river, mountain range, etc.). Those are easy and there's a bonus one on the final for an extra 10 points to be added to your lowest test. You can go to outside lectures for extra credit on your quizzes if you need it. There are a couple of novels to read, too, but they aren't too bad and it doesn't hurt your grade if you don't read them. I really learned a lot from this class and it has definitely been my favorite core class so far.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HIS 1307 - Professor Rust was a great teacher! he was always very passionate about the material and made it interesting for the class too. He is very fair when it comes to grading & gives partial credit and give you the benefit of the doubt. The tests are a doozie only because it includes alot alot of material so just start studying early! but he gives you everything that will be on the test including similiar essay prompts and a selection of identifies that he will pull from while making the test. He offers extra credit and drops many of your lowest quiz grades! Relatively low average workload to prepare for each class, only the 2 tests, final, and research paper provide the largest part of the workload. Prof Rust is so polite, nice, and friendly that you can't help but enjoy his class! I would take him again!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIC 1324 - He is an amazing professor who always had very insightful comments to make in our small group discussions. His photo essays in large group made the lectures more interesting and easier to relate to. He was very helpful with the research paper and is a fair grader. Overall he has a passion for history and it shows! I would take another one of his classes if I had the opportunity.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:4329 - AMAZING!!! I recommend Dr. Rust to everyone. He loves what he teaches and that really shines through. He's a decent grader and gives you credit for knowing even a part of the answers. His tests are very straight forward, essays and ideas and on the ideas don't worry - you don't need to know any weird details. Makes class soooo interesting and he is extremely helpful. Defiantly take him once before you leave Baylor.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2007-04-24

Comments:1307 - I love Professor Rust. He reminds me of a hawk and he is so proper. Great at telling the facts. The only bad thing about his test is that he gives you a good 60-70 ids and he only has 10 on the test. And a majority of the ids were never discussed in class. So you have to use your book and google. Also, read the assigned readings b/c he does pop quizes about every week. He is also great about giving out extra credit. He is just such a great guy and great at what he does. You won't regret having his class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1307 - he is a nice guy if he never counts you tardy! very passionate and knows alot about history especially European History, His lectures are long but interesting. he has 12 pop quizes on the readings but drops 4 of them and gives you extra credit. The downside is there were only 2 tests + the final so the tests covered alot of material. But there are only 2 essays and identifications. He is perhaps thebest history professor i have ever had! I would definitely recomend him! You will learn a lot in this class  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:4340 - Dr. Rust is a wonderful teacher. He is very passionate about history, especially European history and the world wars. Although his lectures are long and intensive, he will teach you everything you need to know about that subject. He's willing to help any student if he/she has any problem.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-01-10

Comments:1307 - Even though his voice is sort of monotone he is still a great lecturer and has a great sense of "dry" humor. His lectures include a lot of information not in the textbook and he has a good style of storytelling. I would take him again.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-05-22

Comments:1307 - I have no doubt that Dr. Rust knows a lot about history and is an interesting person. That being said, this class sucked. Rust has a voice that has a natural ability to literally put you to sleep. He is boring and the material is just as boring. The reading quizzes are nearly impossible even if you do read. The tests are not that hard but they take a lot of studying. On the tests are these ID's where you have to give who, what, where, and why on 10 people, and he gives you a list of 75 that are eligible to be on the test. Nice guy, bad class.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-04-15

Comments:1307 - I have no doubt that Dr. Rust is a nice man, but his class is just not fun. The reading quizzes are impossible, even if you read the material. He has ID sections on his tests in which you need to know about 75 events (who, what, where, when) and he only asks about 10 on the tests. A research paper and map quizzes are also a part of his class. I would recommend a different professor. Although Dr. Rust seems like an interesting person, his class is not interesting.   - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1307 - First of all, it was way too much work! I was so scared to miss class because I didn't want to miss a quiz or a lecture. His lectures were not very organized at all and I was usually very bored. He is a nice man, but I didn't enjoy his 1307 class. I am a history major and did learn alot of information but the amount of material to learn was unreal if you wanted to actually do well on the tests. He does random pop quizes and map quizzes. He does stick to the syllabus but I would take someone else for the class  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:1307 - Dr. Rust is very funny and charming. He will help you if you give effort. There really is no way to memorize 30 pages of information in one night for a quiz the next day, so good luck with the quizzes. Just make sure to bs your way through the tests, research paper, and map quizzes and the daily quizzes won't bring you down too much. He's a great teacher and I learned a lot from him. One of the best at Baylor.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:1307 - I hated his class. way too much info to study for a test. don't take him, hes a BIC prof that teaches non BIC classes like its BIC. drop him before you start. i shoulda droped at the beginning and taken history at home this summer. never again will i take a class from him.   - Grade In Class:D

Comments:HIS 1307 - Dr. Rust is the nicest man ever! The class was not too bad...quizzes over readings, tests, and map exercises. He gave excellent lectures that really helped in understanding the material. Take his class if you need history!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Dr. Rust is AWESOME!!! I have him for World Cultures II and has successful made me love the BIC again after my horror in Rhetoric. Time flies by in that class like nobody's business and I have learned alot from him. His Powerpoints are highly amusing and really pretty (as corny as that sounds). He is pretty laidback about stuff, but you have to do the work. He grades fairly and is very willing to help you out. I would recommend him highly to anyone who wants to really learn from someone who really loves to teach. Dr. Rust is the coolest!!!

Comments:Dr. Rust is a great teacher. His workloads are managable without too much pressure. He cares about his students and can be approached very easily!!!

Comments:BIC 1324 - I had Dr. Rust as a small group professor in World Cultures II, and I thoroughly enjoyed his class. His presentation style was interesting, and it was obvious that he cared about the material that he was teaching. He was also very accomodating and willing to help however he could. Overall: **** 1/2 Grade in Course: A
