Comments:1301 - I GREATLY feared having Young as my professor in Chem before the start of the semester, but he was the only professor I could take. However, I quickly learned that he is a great guy who really cares about his students. While he is unarguably a great person, he's a bad teacher. I rarely, if ever knew what he was saying and never knew how to apply it to practice problems. He was teaching the material, but not in a way that I understood. (For which I take partial responsibility.) However, there were MANY perks to this class. Young didn't start taking attendance until the last couple weeks of class. If you miss less than two classes, you get bonus points. Young had two FANTASTIC SIs (especially Alex) who conducted great reviews of what we should have learned in class. One could frequently hear students leaving SI sessions saying, "I just learned in two hours what I should have learned for the past two weeks." Going to SI was the ONLY way I passed this class, much less with a "B." Another perk is that Young passes out practice exams in class. Some of the questions will be quoted verbatim on the test, while others will have some numbers changed. Alex makes additional practice tests, then works them out so everyone can see how to solve the problems. So long as you memorize how to work the practice tests, you WILL pass this class with a good grade... even an "A" would be possible. Your lowest grade of five 25-question tests throughout the semester will be dropped. The final was fast (only 25 questions) and relatively easy. Even though Young might not be the best teacher, I would say that he has by far the best class for this course! - Grade In Class:B |

Comments:1301 - This class was a joke. I took two years of chemistry in high school, and I never studied for his tests, and I got a B every time. I wish I had studied more, because he makes it so easy for you to get a 100 on his tests - he even TELLS you that his old tests are just floating around with other students, and his tests are the exact same every year. Go to SI - it'll help a lot, because going to class is a complete waste of time. In class, Professor Young would talk the whole time, but it was always of so little significance that you didn't really even fully learn it. Luckily, he gives no homework, and he just has his five tests, so the workload is pretty much nothing. I opened my textbook hardly ever, so don't bother buying the $275 brand new one at the bookstore. - Grade In Class:B |

Comments:1302 - I took this class because I'd heard the Dr. Young was such a good teacher. I was in for a huge surprise. Every class day, he would just write equations and work problems on the board WITHOUT giving you any context of what he was working on or why he was doing it. He didn't teach concepts at all. I just took notes faithfully and then would go home and try to figure out what the heck he was teaching. I am a good student (had a 4.0 till his class) and I failed the first two tests. Luckily he drops one of the tests, and offers many bonus problems. If you can't get a hold of old tests (which i couldn't for the first two tests) then you are screwed, to be put simply. The ONLY way I didn't fail this course was because of SI. the two instructors were VERY HELPFUL. Besides the fact that he cannot teach worth a flip, Dr. Young seems Bipolar. One minute in class he's all buddy buddy with the students he likes in his class, and then the next minute he'll be sternly lecturing the class about not reading, or about sleeping. Sometimes within 30 seconds he would go from angelic-trying-to-be-your-best-friend teacher to unprofessional rude, biting, and condescending. I tried hard to like him, but he is simply an awful teacher and mean-natured person. I'm sorry if you were misled by comments on here that he is a good teacher, as I was, and I wish you the best luck. If you still haven't signed up for his class, save yourself a semester of heartache and quickly find a different prof. - Grade In Class:B+ |

Comments:1301 - Dr. Young is absolutely, hands down, no questions asked, positively the worst teacher I have ever had to endure. During class, all he does is give examples of problems and give the answers. Don't think that he can do that for an hour and a half? Believe me, he can. For 90 minutes straight he can put example after example after example on the board without explaining how he came to the answer. He teaches no theory whatsoever, so even taking or reading notes is pointless. If you think you understand what's going on, just wait until the test and you'll find out that "that problem was an exception" or "you didn't follow this rule." He never teaches rules, theories, or principles. CHEMISTRY IS IMPOSSIBLE TO LEARN WITHOUT THOSE THINGS! You won't learn a single thing in this class. I am going to have to meet with my next chemistry professor before the semester starts and tell him that I am going to need extra help in the class because I will be so far behind. The only thing good about this class is that you can SOMETIMES get his old tests which are very similar to the tests he will give you. BUT, he will change them up to where the problem doesn't make sense. I would recommend not even taking chemistry if you get stuck with him. It would be better to wait for another teacher during another semester to take this class. - Grade In Class:B |
