Comments:1300 - He is not nice or friendly. He is not helpful at all and will make you feel dumb when you ask questions. Don't take him.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2022-08-09

Comments:1301 - What a jerk!!! I will never knock someone for having an accent in their speech, but do know it is there and try to be understanding. Past that, he looked us in our faces and said he would give anyone who got above a 92 on the final a 100 average in the class because he knew none of us were good enough to do so. And when I went to ask him about it further, he said I didn't have to worry because I wasn't a student that was capable of an A!!! I wish I could tell my freshman self to go to the dean! Don't take him.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2021-06-07

Comments:1302 - Taking his class online was pretty difficult; tests were a time crunch and he went through the class pretty fast. I managed to squeak by with an A (94+) but I studied the OWLs, the powerpoints, and the textbook multiples times to prepare for his exams (which I still found difficult). If you take his class, you will need to put in A LOT of effort and definitely attend SI.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2021-05-10

Comments:1302 - Definitely do your OWLs! I got an A- (94+ is an A) and would have made an A if I did my OWLs. Exams were hard... we had 30-40 questions in 2 hours and I still found myself struggling to finish each time, so pace yourself!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2021-05-10

Comments:CHE 1302 - Definitely not recommend you to take him, personally would not once again. First of all his accent makes his lecture barely understandable. The exams are extremely stressful because of the short amount of time and hard at the same time. His PowerPoints are not straightforward but messy. Studying from the OWL textbook would be the best option you should do! Classify all the different types of questions as well. Love for chemistry greatly depressed.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2021-05-10

Comments:1301 - What a nice guy apart from telling the class that we will all fail the final regardless of how much we study. He is nice in the dining halls, but a terrible teacher. 0/10 i dont recommend  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2021-01-11

Comments:1302 - Two big things you're probably wondering: grading and tests. Sadly an A is a 94 and up which is brutal but considering he gives multiple choice question tests but will count basically ANY WORK on the side for credit. He isn't the best with answering questions he doesn't understand and isn't amazing teacher (better researcher). I like him as a person he's a cut lil guy and OwlV2 is a gimme 100% on a test. A is doable, even as 94 because he has a compassionate heart.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-04-18

Comments:1301 - Dr. Manzanares is very kind and helpful he let me retake an exam at the end of the semester and everything. If you can sit in the front of his class I advise you do because he writes on the board a lot and you can't really see or hear from the back of the room. Seats are assigned so be aggressive about getting a good seat. His teaching style is a little unorganized but its chem 1 so teaching it to yourself is not that bad. Seek out a group of friends who could help you out if you're struggling and go to SI if you can. This class was a little bit of a struggle but with hard work you can come out with a decent grade. OWLv2 IS VERY IMPORTANT! Do your homework because it will teach anything you miss in class. He assigns a lot of this and it is due before the exam so you get a lot of time to do it but start very early because each chapter is like 50 questions. I once worked on OWL for like 2 weeks and I did it every single day.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Che 1301 - Dr. Manzanares is a professor who first and foremost cares about his students. He took attendance by hand each week so that he could learn all of our names and he still says hi to me on campus every time we pass by each other. I'm saddened to see other reviews speaking poorly of him. I readily admit that he sometimes wasn't the clearest with explaining some concepts, but I find that with many professors. I personally felt that his accent did not deter me from learning from his lectures, but I know that some of my peers struggled a bit. Even so, he prepares his students well for exams by giving practice exams every time that give us a very realistic idea of what is expected of us.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-05-05

Comments:CHEM 1301 - Dr. Manzanares is super sweet and genuinely loves to teach and help/get to know his students. His in class lectures give an overview of what you should know from each chapter. He assigns homework off of OWL V2. Each chapter that will be on the exam will have a Chapter EOC which is basically the homework for the class and is due usually on or the day before the test day for those chapters. His tests are very similar to the Exam Review that he puts up on canvas!!! I took his 9:05 AM class MWF and the days we had tests he allowed us to come in at 8 AM to give us more time on our exams which I found super helpful! If you understand the material and concepts on those reviews you should be fine in regards to tests. Other than that, if you need help with chemistry make sure to ask him and if you take the time to review you material and work hard you should be all good to go! Best of luck to ya!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-01-17

Comments:1301 - Manzanares is a nice professor. He doesn't give out much hw other than owl assignments that are due the day before exams. He gives out pre exams to help you prepare for the actual exams. He doesn't give out extra credit and grades on the A- scale(which I didn't really like about his class). His test are all multiple choice. He will usually give back the exams for you to keep, look over, and learn from the questions you got wrong in the exam so that was one thing I did like about his class.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2019-01-13

Comments:1301 - Dr. Manzanares is the sweetest professor I had this semester. He really wants his students to succeed and gives us the tools to do so. His lectures are pretty boring and not really helpful. His homework assignments take forever but there is only one assignment per chapter and he makes them due the night before the exam. The homework is really how I learned the material because any questions you get wrong, it teaches you how to do it. You get multiple tries on each question on the homework so an A on every homework assignment is very possible, as long as you have the patience to stick with it. He has pre exams for extra practice and he takes a lot of his exam questions from there. If I could retake the class and change something I would spend more time doing the pre exams. I still managed to do okay but if I had actually tried to work through all the pre exams I might have done better. I definitely recommend him.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2018-12-14

Comments:1301 - A lot of students are turned away from Dr. Manzanares due to his thick accent, but honestly if you pay enough attention and attend SI for concepts you struggle with, this class is extremely easy. Owlv2 online homework are long but very educational and help increase understanding for the tests. He puts practice exams on canvas for each chapter that are exactly like the test questions, so that should really be your only studying material. He has high expectations but they are easily attainable if you put some work in. I've heard other profs have harder tests too so I would recommend him  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-12-10

Comments:1301 - he is the kindest guy in the world and really wants his students to pass his tests. he gives out pre-exam reviews which are EXACTLY like the test, so study them and make sure to do them over and over. He does OWL which is super time consuming and not very helpful for the test, but they can be helpful for the class. i would not even suggest buying the book for this course because it does not help. if you look up step by step answers to the problems on the pre-exam and then practice it over and over you will most definitely get an A in the class! wish i would've know that his tests were based on the pre-exams in the beginning because i wouldve done a lot better on his tests. unfortunately there are no drop tests and he expects you to work hard for your grade  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2018-12-06

Comments:CHE 1301 - I highly recommend this professor if you are looking for a doable-A and low-stress. He is extremely kind and truly cares about getting to know his students. If you are having trouble he is always available to answer your questions. On top of this he is a very intelligent guy, so if you're curious about the ins and outs of chemistry, he's the guy to take! P.S. He gives out pre-exams that are very similar in format to the test.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-11-14

Comments:1301 - I am retaking chemistry this semester and this man is so much better than my last instructor. He has an accent and mumbles a little, but he would post a chapter review with many practice problem and would put those on the test most of the time. He is such a sweet professor as long as you study you should be fine.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2018-04-14

Comments:1301 - The first day of class you will be terrified...And as the tests come out, with lower and lower grades, you will start to freak out even more. As the semester goes by, he does not curve any of the exams, does not drop a test grade and does not offer extra credit. With that being said, he does offer text makeups up to 80 points that can help your grade and is available in office hours and is far more helpful in office hours than in class! GO TO SI!! His tests often take problems off the SI worksheets! Also, GO TO CLASS!! You wont want to because he can't teach and you don't learn anything off of his lectures, but he takes attendance everyday...In my class, the kids that had 0-2 absences or so got AT LEAST a 3% curve to their final grades. His class seems impossible to get a good grade in if you don't do amazing on the exams, but if you go and let him know who you are, you will do fine :) He's actually a very sweet and kind old man!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2016-03-20

Comments:CHE 1301 - Cool and straight forward guy. His accent is not bad at all! We were fortunate enough to have an amazing SI. You should definetly read the book and do as many practice problems as you can! Vocab and rules are also important. There is Mastering Chemistry for online homework, but he will be more than happy to help you during office hours. Only reason I have a low grade is because I didn't study for the last exam. If you are good a teaching yourself concepts and asking for help, then you will be fine!  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2015-12-12

Comments:CHE 1301 - There is no curve, no extra credit, no grade changes, and no test corrections. Basically, if you screw up a test you are screwed for the course. The one positive thing I could say about him is he is ALWAYS available. Take every advantage of his office hours. And the other good thing about the class is if you miss a class, it won't set you too far behind because you end up having to teach yourself everything anyways  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2015-11-08

Comments:1301 - Professor Manzanares is phenomenal, I completely fell in love with chemistry after taking his class. Forewarning, he does use Mastering Chemistry for homework, which is just about THE MOST frustrating and time-consuming program ever designed. I made the mistake of putting a couple off to long, hence the B+. Otherwise, his class is ridiculously easy and simple to grasp with little workload, with all multiple choice tests. He teaches based on powerpoint, but focus more on what he says-- his explanations are not only humorous, but also insightful. He has had a lot of experience in the chemistry field, so be sure to respect him even though he can occasionally make a few mathematical errors when he is rushing through concepts. It's okay! We're all human. Also, if you need help, feel comfortable asking him. He's super approachable and understanding, despite his default frown. He is also paired with a great SI, Hope Wuerch. She is fabulous. And like many of these reviews have said, he does have a slight accent, but it isn't anything difficult to understand-- y'all need to calm down. It's okay, breathe, it'll be marvelous. Final tips: 1. Do the Mastering Chemistry early, procrastination is a temptation you have to resist with this. Also, try it without notes to really test your knowledge. 2. Attend class, the powerpoints are informational, but the class is a lot easier if you just listen to what he says instead of trying to decode the textbook (I actually never opened my textbook since he explains things so well). 3. Respect him, this sounds so silly, but he notices if you're unashamedly sleeping in class. Pay attention, interact with him during the lesson, it'll help you learn too. Good luck! He really is a great professor, you'll be lucky to learn from him.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2014-01-24

Comments:1301 - There are many comments about him being a horrible teacher and even though I received a C, I think he is a good teacher. His accent is the easiest I've had understanding compared to a majority of the teachers who do not speak English very well. He only teaches by powerpoint but gives examples on the board. So yes it can be a bit boring but he knows chemistry extremely well and if you have any problems you can go to his office hours. He loves chemistry and wants others to understand. Overall I would say take him if you learn well by powerpoints.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2014-01-14

Comments:1105 - I loved Mr. Manzanares. **He does have an accent, but still understandable. Also, if you struggle with chemistry, he may not be the one. I had a pretty good background of chemistry so he was perfect for me. He goes through the material thoroughly and teaches well. He is very sweet and always available upon need. His tests are pretty straight forward. I read and take notes before every class, paid attention in class, and ended with a 96%. He teaches in a bigger room so it may be hard to hear/pay attention if you are in the back. Sit in the middle/frontish. If you put work into this class it shouldn't cause stress.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2014-01-01

Comments:1301 - Plan on teaching yourself for this class. His lectures are all over the place and he's not a very exciting guy, making him hard to follow. The tests are frustrating multiple choice. The reason they're frustrating is mostly because the question on a one sentence blip in the textbook is worth just as much as the problem you spent half an hour learning how to do. If you're a proficient at remembering small details and memorization the tests shouldn't be much of an issue but if you're a big picture person you'll struggle. My suggestion for doing better than I did in the class is to finish your mastering chemistry about a week before your test and just become familiar with literally everything that was covered. Go through the power points, you're wasting your time with the book for anything other than looking at how to do homework problems.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2013-12-27

Comments:1301 - His accent is pretty thick, but understandable. He teaches very quickly and it can be hard to understand, but he has always been accurate about what he is teaching. Many of the students in my class say negative things about his teaching ability, but he has never mislead anybody. His class is not hard, people complain about not getting it and needing SI, but if you pay attention you can make an A easy. I have never gone to SI and I did okay just reading the book.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2013-11-05

Comments:1302 - This man has a very thick accent. He's cool sometimes but I never understood what he was talking about. SI was a life saver. Sometimes what he's saying gets confusing. But if you ask him a question, most of the time HE DOES NOT ANSWER ACCURATELY! Just a warning. Lots of mastering chem homework and the tests were doable but not easy.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2013-07-25

Comments:1302 - I am taking this class as a retake. I made a D first with Dr. McGrath. Dr. Manzanares has a very strong Spanish accent so if that bothers you, you will probably not want to take him. The accent never bothered me very much and I found that he was really very good at teaching. The exams are all multiple choice and very much a good assessment of your knowledge of the material. He allows you to replace one of your exams with your Mastering Chemistry grade, but he hardly offers any bonus on Mastering so I spent a reasonable amount of effort to get a 94 on it. He curves slightly for attendance and participation at the end. Take note: CHE 1302 is NOT an easy class no matter who you take. A lot of people will tell you that McGrath is easy but I didn't find this to be true and did better with Manzanares, but I still had to work very hard to do this much better.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2013-05-02

Comments:1301 - He has a thick accent that is hard to understand and he is writing is hard to see on the board especially if you sit up high. Most of time he doesn't explain what he's showing you on the board and its confusing. Having Master Chemistry replace a test grade helped a lot and his tests weren't bad if you read and study the book on your on. his class was pretty much pointless, you really just teach yourself.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2013-04-12

Comments:1301 - Our class got to chapter 11 while most of the others finished on chapter 6. He has a very thick accent and strange sentence structure and is very spacey when teaching. That being said, if you're a person that is good at teaching yourself, you can pass this class. Mastering Chemistry can replace your lowest test grade and he gives extra credit for attendance at the end.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-12-18

Comments:1301 - This class is tough. He is just really confusing in his lectures. The only reason that I got a high B in this class was because of the SI with Hope Wuerch. She was great. He does allow you replace your lowest exam grade with your homework grade from MasteringChemistry which was pretty helpful. But on the whole, I've heard there are much better Professors for this course. I would recommend checking those out.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2012-12-14

Comments:1301 - You can't understand him. He doesn't know how to teach such an easy class. I would study a lot and it wasn't worth it. I made a better grade in 1302. That shows something. He shouldn't teach this class. Don't take him!  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2012-12-10

Comments:1301 - His lectures weren't that helpful, and most of my friends told me they felt the same way. I had to do most of my learning from the book, which was rather difficult, but I managed. The only homework I had was Mastering Chemistry, and there are no quizzes. Also, he gives a very generous curve before the final. I never went to his office hours, but I heard that he was helpful in person.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-01-31

Comments:Chem 1 - This wasn't that bad of a class, once I figured out how to study for it. His review sessions every wednesday helped a lot. Make sure and do the Mastering Chemistry homework, because he replaces the lowest test grade with it. At the end of the semester, he bumps up everybodys grades based on attendance, which helped a lot. All his tests are multiple choice, just watch out for test number 2. That one's a beast. He does have an accent but after the first day I didn't have any problems understanding him. Definitely not the worst professor I've had.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2012-01-09

Comments:1301 - Dr. Manzanares is an adorable and excellent teacher! He sometimes add humor to his lecture to make class a little bit more interesting. He does an amazing job of explaining higher level concepts. He holds problem solving session every Wednesday to help students with homework problems on Mastering Chemistry, which there is one for every chapter. He responds to email within an hour or two. If you do the homework, your homework grade replaces your lowest test grade. His test includes questions from the homework and some conceptual questions, so they are not that difficult as long as you study. Then at the end of the semester, he does some weird calculation that increase your final grade by a few points, so he is an extremely helpful and nice professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-12-17

Comments:1301 - If you want to teach yourself and are very good in chemistry, you should have no problem taking this course. But, if you have a hard time with it like me and also his thick accent then DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. I am not bitter about him but take my advice if you are a pre-med, pre-dent, or whatever this is not the class for you.  - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2008-07-11

Comments:1301 - He is a great person overall and is willing to help you out for as long as you need. Great office hours. His teaching ability is the main problem though, he starts teaching you and just goes on about the hardest topics and never really explains anything. You have to teach yourself from the book entirely throughout the semester and it really isn't that hard. I studied 1-2 days before every test and got an A in the class and I never did his homework assignments. Even though he doesn't take attendance he does make comments to you in class when you are absent. His tests are EASY and there almost never that tricky. He gave 10 tests during the Fall 2007 semester and none were really hard. At the end of the semester he lets you make up test grades.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-01-14

Comments:1301 - This class is extremely easy if you're one of those people who can teach yourself and have already had some chemistry...no graded hw, no quizzes...only 3 tests that are very predictable and are a cinch if you have studied. You don't even need to pay attention in class, and anyway chances are you won't b/c he is quite boring. He is VERY nice too and eager to help.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-07-25

Comments:1301 - He was the worst teacher for me to have, especially as an incoming freshman. You basically have to teach yourself everything, I’m surprised I even passed. Last semester he gave us notes over the chapters the day before the final which was pointless because you can't cram all that stuff in one night. In his class your grade depends on how well you can teach yourself. Oh and sometimes he was hard to understand because of his accent but I guess that really didn't matter because he really didn't say much that was useful.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2007-01-10

Comments:1301 - im still not sure what i think about this class... there were homework problems every night, but none of them were graded, and we had a lot of tests, all multiple choice, which was nice because they balance out (and he dropped 2 at the end which brought my average up a few points) - he really does try to explain things, but i usually found myself watching my friend doodle or staring at the clock... i ended up just reading the chapters before the tests.. he is available almost everyday for office hours and very nice and eager to help, but he usually isnt able to clarify things any better than he did in class.. a lot of times he gets off onto random tangents which are interesting, but overall, i would suggest trying for a different teacher.. the only reason i think i did well was because i took chem II in high school and was willing to teach myself  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - Horrible, tests are impossible and not willing to help.  - Grade In Class:D

Date: 2006-10-31

Comments:4327 - Lectures were somewhat helpful. He is very willing to help students. Do all the problems from each chapter, even though he tells you only to work like 10 from each chapter. Some tests were impossible but some were easy. Again, just do all the problems and don't forget units and you'll do fine.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2004-12-27

Comments:4321 - Absolutly Terrible! Worst teacher I ever had. Would not work problems for you even if you asked him during office hours, very unwilling to help students.   - Grade In Class:F
