Comments:3322 - Everything you have heard about Dr. Tandy is unfortunately true. Let's start with the pros -- the class is flipped classroom so he does require you to watch videos before class. Luckily these aren't super long. I'd say it took me about 45min to an hour and most times I was even able to watch ahead. If you're scared about the flipped classroom aspect, it is actually very doable. Then theres the dreaded cold calling. I think this was a new addition this semester but he had a stack of cards with seat number and row letter so it was entirely random. It is NOT personal. I came to class very prepared every day because you simply don't know what the fates have for you that day. This really helped when it came time to study for the test. If you do get called on, it is intimidating and yeah he isn't always the nicest (especially with his delivery) but honestly it isn't that deep. I don't remember anyone who was called on in my class and I was only called on once so do not let that stop you from taking it. The class content is not super difficult, there is just a lot of it (but WAY less compared to something like biochem). I absolutely loved the content of the class and it seems super helpful for not only the MCAT but affirming that I enjoy content I will see in medical school. This class is a MUST before medical school. The cons. Yes Dr. Tandy is rude. The best way to prepare for this class is to shadow a surgeon because he is a surgeon through and through. I don't think he intends to be mean at his core but he definitely comes across as cold and uncaring. His office hours are NOT for class content questions (he has discussion boards for that). DO NOT under any circumstances talk to him about medical school. He told my my MCAT score wasn't good enough to get in. It won't end will it will only hurt your feelings so he may act like he is such a mentor but don't do it. Format - His tests honestly aren't super hard. 4 tests, one final. 50 MC on the tests. 75 on the final. The questions are fairly straight forward, he isn't trying to trick you, but you do have to know the material well. Find a study group. Quiz each other out loud. Another note is that I did take this class my senior year so I can't say how hard it is with MCAT or physics and biochem but a lot of people did that.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3322 - The content isn't difficult. What makes this class hard is learning how he asks questions. Some of his wording is tricky and he doesn't let you ask clarification questions during the exams. There are no homework grades or extra credit. Your grade consists of 4 non-cumulative unit exams plus a cumulative final exam. You can be exempt from the final if you have an average of 93 or above. I would recommend trying your best to be exempt from the final because his final exam was the hardest out of all of the exams. Getting an A is doable as long as you know how to study. I went to SI, stayed on top of the videos, and asked questions in class and on the discussion board. The exams are free for all from his videos, however, he will emphasize topics / discuss topics in class that he will ask you questions about. Chances are, if you talk about it in class, it will 100% be on the exam. If it's not talked about in class, there is a lower chance it will be on the exam, but you must still study everything. I highly recommend going to SI because they know what topics he usually asks questions on and how he normally asks questions. Do not ask content questions any time outside of class or during office hours because you will get on his bad side. You can only ask questions during class to 'make it fair for everyone.' I recommend watching the videos before lecture 1-2 times. And re-watch the videos another time the day before the exam. It helps so much. You are very capable of getting an A, just try to ignore his stupid comments. Just because you get an A on an exam doesn't mean he will think you're smart. He only appreciates the "A+ students" as being "gifted."  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 3322 - The bottom line is that this class is very challenging. Dr. Tandy is a clinical professor, and that is reflected in his in-class demeanor and teaching style. However, you can succeed if you take his advice and study hard. Tips for success- DO NOT BLOW OFF THE VIDEO SCHEDULE. I did that, and ate a 68 for my third exam. Do not be me, and study ahead of time. USE THE DISCUSSION BOARD- That board is super helpful for engaging with Dr. Tandy and your peers. If your classmate is right, Dr. Tandy will say so. If they're wrong, he'll correct them. If nobody responds, he will personally respond. DO NOT ASK ABOUT CONTENT IN OFFICE HOURS- I promise you it will not go well. The discussion board, lecture, or email are the best ways to ask about class content. If you are pre-med or any form of pre-health, use the time to ask about medical school applications or life as a doctor. He genuinely enjoys talking about that stuff with students, so do that, and get on his good side. STUDY TOGETHER- find successful students and study together. He will always ask if you do that, so cover your rear. Work together and succeed. This class is a rite of passage, but if you do these things and work hard. you will have a wonderful time. Dr. Tandy is tough but fair, and is a wealth of knowledge if you ask the right questions. I hope this helps, and good luck.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3322 - This class is not easy. As a premed student, getting a D in this class is one of the biggest embarrassments of my college experience so far. I really enjoyed the content, but I did poorly on all the exams except the 4th one, which I got an 86 on. Dr. Tandy doesn't lecture in class. You have to watch the lecture videos for the class before you arrive, and during the class period it is purely discussion based. The videos can be dense, and vary from 5 minutes to even 30 minutes. Tandy has taught this class for decades, and he sees patterns. At the beginning of the class he will publish a "warning signs" document along with the syllabus which has a list of categories which, if they apply to you, mean you are not likely to succeed in the class. I got a D in this class and at least 2 of the "warning signs" applied to me. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the class, and you should take this class. It's just not as easy as the rest of these reviewers are making it out to be.  - Grade In Class:D

Comments:3322 - I have never lost respect for a man in my life as quickly as I did for Tandy. His introduction to our class he mentioned that his time was more important as a physician than it was for us as students so he would not take course related questions during office hours(side note he was let go from his hospital during my semester lol). I also vividly remember him making a remark towards a student when learning about bones and growth plates along the lines of "that is why you are so small" which is completely unprofessional. Tandy is snobby, arrogant, self-righteous, and completely full of himself which are all unjustified. As a pre-med student I enjoyed the content but did not like Tandy as a person and thought that he ruined the course which I would otherwise love. The class itself does teach you a lot although it is entirely self-taught from videos you are expected to watch outside of class. I would still take the class again because it is very interesting and I feel prepared me well for MCAT and so on, but I think Tandy would fare best in a job outside of academia. To reiterate my message Tandy is an unpleasant jerk.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Hphys - Dr. Tandy is a pretty straight forward professor. He tells you what you need to know for exams, but that does not mean he won't try to trick you. He loves to put A, B, C and then D will be A and B and E will be C and B or something like that. You just have to be confident and know the information. I assure you this class is doable, find a study group, utilize SI, but do not rely on Dr. Tandy to answer your questions as he is sassy and never really on campus other than class times.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2023-01-24

Comments:3322 - For anyone interested in the health fields, this is a relevant and helpful class. As such, the pace is fast and the tests are difficult. Dr. Tandy is a dry and concise professor. I rate him high on his ability to teach, which happens mainly in his videos but also in class if you have a relevant question. I rate him lower in his availability because he is a practicing medical doctor and is not on campus as much as most other professors. He is good at explaining topics, although he can be condescending. If you are called on in class, be prepared to answer exactly according to the information in his videos(I was never called on so that is also a possibility). The workload is medium to large for a Biology class, with taking notes on the videos and studying for exams being the two time commitments. The grade in the class comes only from tests. That said, your performance in the class will largely depend on your ability to take good notes, study those notes to retain the information, and good test taking strategies (reading slowly, process of elimination, saving harder questions for last, etc.). Dr. Tandy will try to trick you on the tests with multiple choice answers but if you know you learned the videos well and trust what you know, you should be fine. Four tests and a final, and if you earn a 93 average before the final, you don't have to take the final and will have to lead a two hour review session instead. No textbook, just knowing Tandy's videos. Tests and final were all multiple choice. Finding a study partner or group is the best thing you could do to improve performance in this class!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:H Phys - I will start by saying there is no way IN HELL that all of these people got an A in this course. If you have an A (above a 93) you do not have to take the final (you also must host a final exam study group and have people show up in order to exempt the final). The classroom was almost completely full the day of the final- meaning maybe a handful of students in a 150+ person class got an A. His lecture videos are good but you must know every single detail- which is agonizing when theres 8 hours of lecture for an exam. He is also rude and self absorbed. I have never studied as much for a class as this one and still got a C. I only made an A on one exam. What is good about him is that he explains things well in his lecture videos and they are all uploaded to canvas so you can watch as many times as needed. If you are looking for a prof that will help you during office hours- run away from Tandy. He tells students not to come to office hours because he will not answer questions, only during class time in front of the class with a microphone. He will not even answer questions after class. Only grades are exams which is typical for an upper level bio. I have only met 2 people through my 4 years at Baylor who have gotten an A, and one was on the baylor to BCM path thing (meaning he is unnaturally smart).  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:BIO3322 - Okay first things first, this class is not as hard as people make it out to be. If you put in the effort to understand the material and stay on track with his videos, you can definitely make an A or B. You will never be surprised by content on the exams, but there are definitely some tricky questions. My grades were A, B, A, A and an A on the final. If you have a 93+ you don't have to take the final as long as you host a review session. More than anything, this class was just annoying. His lecture videos are very well put together, but the fact that we need to watch all the videos and come to class was annoying, because you don't really get anything from class. It is pretty much a regurgitation of the videos, but in cold call format. I personally was too anxious about being called on and trying to study the next part of my notes to learn anything from class, and if attendance wasn't required I can't say I really would have gone. Like many other people, I just wasn't a fan of Dr. Tandy's demeanor, but there were moments were he seemed alright. I learned a decent amount from the class and Tandy's h phys is almost a "rite of passage" for Baylor premeds, but I am glad it is over. If you take good notes and go to SI, you will be fine. Kayla is an amazing SI (I only went to the exam reviews bc I was tired of giving h phys my time, but if you are struggling I would definitely recommend). This class will prepare you well for later physiology, but if you are looking for an easy A, this is not it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 3322 - Professors are well-aware of what BU Books is and where their ratings stand. Dr. Tandy has all the feedback in the world to improve this course, but judging by the reviews from years ago, he is not interested in making any positive changes and has not taken initiative to do so. If your textbook came to life, you would get Dr. Tandy. While his lecture videos are great, his teaching style overlooks the point of having a professor in the first place. He is incredibly impersonal and doesn’t answer any questions beyond what is covered in the videos. While this might seem nice and straightforward, it actually reflects his failure to foster students’ intellectual curiosity, an implied task of his job as a university professor. Let’s not pretend this is an in-person course. It’s an online course disguised as an in-person one, increasing time spent on course material unnecessarily due to Baylor’s attendance policy. I did best in this course during the times where I went to class the least. Lecture was sometimes helpful, but didn’t give you any additional information beyond what was in the lecture videos. It was also very difficult to remain engaged because Dr. Tandy uses no enthusiasm and speaks in very monotone voice. I want to mention that I never went to SI, but know that Kayla does an amazing job. However, SI is supposed to be exactly what it is called – SUPPLEMENTAL. It seems that the bulk of teaching occurs in SI rather than the lecture, but frankly, I was not willing to sacrifice even more of my time (in addition to the online AND in-person portions of this course) that I needed to use to succeed in other courses. I may have occasionally gone if I found the material engaging, but unfortunately, I felt like I was fighting the material more than I was excited by it. Overall, the course content is super interesting, but Tandy’s course fails to get students excited and makes learning physiology feel like a threat instead of an opportunity. I learned a lot, but it was more painful than it had to be. I heard there is another professor for this course next year, so that’s cool. Take him/her. Not just for a grade, but for better quality of teaching and a professor who is invested in you even if you don’t earn a 93%+.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3322 - I enjoyed Dr. Tandy's class. I found the lecture videos to be incredibly straightforward, and informative. I always find it frustrating to prepare from a professor's study guide, or assigned videos only to see something not covered in those things on a quiz or exam. I never was "surprised" with his exams. His class was set up in a way that made many people uncomfortable and stressed because of the lengthy cold calling. Rounds will make many people uncomfortable and stressed so get used to it, I suppose. He was also willing to meet with students privately about their future, serving as a mentor, something I highly respected because I don't think he HAD to do that. He even stopped what he was doing to advise me in the hall one day outside his office, and even emailed me over the summer. He was never condescending of my OALA accommodations, nor was he ever SUPER rude. However, he would let me know I was acting without common sense when I didn't follow directions. Lastly, the coolest aspect of this class was when he would show little tidbits of his clinical practice during class time to demonstrate the real-world applications of what we were learning. I studied by watching the lecture videos, taking diligent notes on those, and in class, and attending SI. SI with Kayla is probably the most helpful SI within the entire university. If you skip the lecture and go to SI you are missing out, but will probably be fine.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3322 - In my opinion, I think Dr. Tandy's reverse classroom style of teaching is incredibly beneficial if you do what you are supposed to do, which is come to class prepared. The way it works is that he gives you the lecture videos to watch before coming to class, and during class he would pass the microphone around to students and have them answer questions on the material that was covered in the lecture videos. I found this really helpful because it helped reinforce the material that I learned from the lecture videos, and it came back to me a lot quicker when it came time to study for the exams. So basically, if you want to be successful in this course, watch the lecture videos before class, take detailed notes on them, and go to class prepared to answer any question he asks you. Even if you are not answering the questions, think that you are answering the questions as he's asking them to test your knowledge on the material. I understand having a little bit of stage fright when you get called on, but if you are prepared and have a good grasp of the material, it will be just fine. Overall, this course will probably one of the most enjoyable courses you take if you are going into some kind of healthcare field. The amount of clinical applications that can be made in this course makes is very enjoyable. However, the course is challenging, but definitely doable if you put in the work required. While the material can be a bit difficult to understand, it is also very enjoyable because of the many applications that can be made to medicine and other healthcare fields. As far as Dr. Tandy is concerned, I thought he was an incredible professor who truly does want to help his students. He can be very intimidating at first, but if you get to know him, he is a really nice person who really cares about helping his students succeed. I personally never found him to be "condescending" towards his students at all, and he can have a good sense of humor at times. As far as the class is concerned, the best think you can do is stay on top of the lecture videos and go to class prepared. Take detailed notes as you watch the videos and write everything down in your own words, which will help you better understand what's being taught. When it comes to studying, I would watch through the lecture videos again and try to tell myself the concept before he talked about it in the lecture videos. If there's anything that you miss, mark that in your notes so that you know to remember that. His exams are not meant to trick you, but be prepared to truly apply the material and not simply regurgitate it. Don't be worried about this course! If you're excited about going into medicine, this course will be a great experience! Be willing to put in the work, and take advantage of any resources that will help you succeed! Good luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3322 - H Phys is a great class with so much potential, yet Dr.Tandy fails to make this class the positive, engaging class it has the potential to be. Your grade is determined by your test scores alone, 4 tests plus the cumulative final. While that is difficult it would be doable, if it wasn't for the other aspects of the course. To give some credit to Tandy, I did really like his lecture videos, they're concise and give you all the information you need to know. There's never any ambiguity on what information you might be tested on which I like, if it's in the videos, you should know it. However, lectures are far different. You are expected to have learned everything before class and throughout lecture he will randomly give people a microphone and make them answer questions on the spot. I get wanting students to come to class prepared and able to answer questions, but putting people on the spot like that is incredibly stress-inducing for no reason. Furthermore, he often forgot to pass the mic to different students, so one poor person would get stuck answering his questions for 15 minutes straight before he moved on. Essentially, you don't learn anything during class, because you're expected to know it all before and you just sit there hoping he won't call on you that day. He is also pretty unavailable for questions about the material, as you are by no means allowed to go to office hours for clarification, which defeats the purpose of office hours. His tests are relatively straightforward, but here's the catch. He forbids his SI to give practice tests, which is one of the big benefits of going to SI. Yes, going to regular sessions will also help deepen understanding, but practice tests are obviously very helpful as a way to check knowledge and ensure your readiness. Furthermore, you never get tests back. Personally, I really value looking over my tests and seeing what I missed and why to improve, but he refuses to give tests back, saying it's of no measurable benefit to students. To me, most of this just comes off as a complete lack of desire to help students by not wanting them to ask questions or have feedback because it would inconvenience him. It's a shame because the material is obviously interesting, it's literally learning about how the body functions, but he makes the class so hard to enjoy.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 3322 - I’ll preface this by saying this class is not nearly hard as people say it is. I really didn’t think it was any more difficult than genetics or molecular cell bio, the only thing is your grade is only based on 4 tests and a final. If you watch the videos 2-3 times through before each exam, you should honestly be fine. However, Dr. Tandy is one of the worst professors I’ve had at Baylor. His lecture videos are relatively helpful, but actual class time is a huge waste. I didn’t go at all for the second half of the semester and my test scores actually were higher. He calls on people at random, and does not hesitate to actively make fun of students if they answer incorrectly. Overall, he’s just condescending and incredibly rude. If I need an ENT, I’m driving to Dallas.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Human Physiology - First off, I really don't understand why his rating is as low as it is. Tandy is an amazing professor, and I could not have wished to take HPhys with any other professor. That being said, Tandy is different from other professors. He is a very busy man and a practicing physician, so he doesn't have time for office hours. If you need answers to anything, GO TO CLASS. Here is what you need to know, HPhys is a difficult course and will require a lot of time, but he makes this course so simple. The entire class is taught in videos, and his class meetings are mainly for reviewing the material. All you have to do to be successful is WATCH the videos and MEMORIZE them. Tandy's videos are very concise and include only relevant information to his test. I suggest taking notes and attending SI, and if you can't, At least do their worksheets. My test grades for the semester were B+, A, A, A, and A on the final. The first test is the hardest test. It consists of the most diverse information, so please study well on it. The rest of the course will consist of more linear material. The best part if you make a 94, you will be exempt from the Final. Overall, Tandy is an amazing professor and only wants success for his students. Take him, and you won't regret it. I hope this helps.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Human Physiology - I want to explain first off that this might be one of if not the most "overhyped" classes at Baylor in the sense that others who have taken it have made it out to be much more difficult than it truly is. I was told constant horror stories prior to taking this class and I'm here to tell you that this class is more than doable. Dr. Tandy is an excellent lecturer, his videos are honestly amazing in helping you learn the material really well and all of his tests are on material solely from his videos. That being said, Dr. Tandy himself is not the most approachable person and emailing him for help can often backfire. Dr. Tandy is also a professor I would strongly recommend not trying to kiss up to because he reads that like a book. I took human physiology during the fall semester of 2020 (so still Covid times), and his live question and answer sessions were not helpful. However, if you follow all of the steps I am about to explain you will get an A, not can, will. First off, there is a lot of material for this class, with the total combined watch time of videos for a single exam being anywhere from 5 to 8 hours. To make the most of your time by doing the least amount of work, what you should do first is watch the videos on 2x speed. You don't even have to understand what is happening just get a sense of what topics are being covered and how he is structuring this unit. After watching the videos on 2x speed, go back and watch the videos on 1x speed while simultaneously making a quizlet or flashcards on the topics and details covered in his videos. I personally made a quizlet because I type faster than I write but do whatever works best to make cards that are detailed but also at least to some extent are in your own words (this helped me conceptualize the topics covered in a way that was not just mindlessly writing down everything Tandy says as that takes ages, but again for your cards, do whatever you think works best). Then, and this is by far the most important part, quiz yourself on your quizlet/flashcards. If you are using quizlet, use the learning feature on it and make it where you see the term or process in question and have to force yourself to explain it. Also, if you can and to make studying for this class less lonely, try to get a group of max 4 people together to talk through your quizlet/flashcards with. Also just to reiterate, blindly memorizing what Tandy says will not help, make sure along with the details, your cards also cover processes and allow you to understand different situations (stuff like "if this changes, how does this affect something else"). If you can truly talk through these topics, understanding the details that he highlights in his videos, and have done active recall through quizzing yourself and talking through these concepts either alone or with a group, you will get an A. To anyone reading this, I hope this insanely long review helps you out. You got this!!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 3322 - Dr. Tandy is an excellent lecturer. I am so thankful to have taken this class before medical school as well as taking the mcat. No matter what grade you get in this class, if you put in your best effort you will come out having learned a ton of interesting material. I honestly loved watching his videos every morning with a cup of coffee jotting down some VERY DETAILED notes. His video lectures are so great because you can pause, rewind, fast forward, etc, which seriously means that you can get every detail down if you want to (you should). The discussions are meant to help you grasp those more in-depth concepts and were structured very nicely. Tandy might come off a little harsh but he's just trying to effectively communicate to a ton of students, ask your SI any and all questions before going to Tandy! His exams are hard, but if you space out the videos and quiz yourself with flashcards and maybe a small study group you should be fine. Don't get me wrong, I definitely had a mental breakdown after getting B's on the first two exams, but I still managed to chug through and was able to pull the A by the skin of my teeth through the (very difficult) final exam. Pro tip: you really don't want to take the final. I would recommend taking this class WAY more seriously earlier on and exempting yourself from it. He loves a good curveball so make sure you are re-reading every question and answer, and most importantly: THINK LIKE TANDY!!! good luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3332 - I do not recommend taking him online -you watch videos and he makes a half-hearted attempt to zoom with the class once a week. In addition, summer courses are very fast paced, so you will have 11 hours of video lectures to learn in 4 days. I felt like I understood the material well after watching his videos, and this was a GREAT MCAT prep class, but I ended up with a 78 due to not understanding his confusing question style. I think that if I could have taken the course in person, I would have been more used to his lecturing style and therefore his questions. Material for each exam finds its way to the next exam, which is difficult if you bomb one exam and ace all the others. He loves tricky questions, like what would happen to plasma K+ if you were lost in the dessert with no water for days. It's not enough to just memorize "K+ moves by solvent drag" - you need to think like Tandy and know he will ask it as tricky as possible. All in all, I'm glad I took this course as it has made my MCAT bio score increase, and I have learned a lot, but I was disappointing in his lack of lecturing and feel it kept me from the grade I had hoped for. Start studying now! The first two exams are the hardest in my opinion, the reproductive/GI tract is the easiest.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:3322 - Tandy is the GOAT. If you are premed, the odds are that you will find this class very interesting and beneficial. He has lecture videos posted to canvas, where you can watch them, take notes, and show up to class having basically heard the lecture already. Yes, he repeats everything in class which can be pointless for some students, but I found that going to class really helped reinforce the material. He is excellent at explaining concepts in more detail (another reason to go to class). Some people only have issues with his demeanor toward his students, but I found him to be pleasant and helpful. He is literally a practicing surgeon so it's understandable that he doesn't have much time to help students outside of class, but he makes up for this by taking questions during class and holding reviews the class before exams. His exams are pretty tailored to good test takers, as they can be a little tricky. I would suggest knowing the material on exams inside out and being able to apply that info to different situations (he helps do some of this in class). He offers an exemption from the final for his students who average at least a 94% on his first 4 exams, and offers these students letters of rec if they hold review sessions with their classmates. I think Tandy is great and his class is extremely valuable, just study the videos a ton and try to think like Tandy when taking the tests. Good luck!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3322 - After taking this class, I honestly do not think that Dr. Tandy should have as low a rating as he does. In this class, there is no homework, or other quizzes, and your entire grade is based off of 4 exams and the final. I think that he does a great job explaining the material through his videos online, which I found to be a lot nicer to have, rather than reading a textbook. It's easy to understand the videos, take notes, and be ready for class. The only thing I didn't like about this class was that going to lecture was pretty much pointless. In class he restated, almost verbatim, what was exactly in the videos, and I ended up playing games on my laptop the entire time / not going at all. I honestly think that Dr.Tandy has the potential to be one of the best professors on campus simply because of his great teaching style and the fact that he is an actual medical doctor. I personally never talked to him about this, but he could potentially be a great resource for connecting with shadowing or advice on medical apps, etc. However, I found him a little difficult to approach at times, which is probably why his rating is so low. If he just fixed this, I think it would be a completely different story. To do well in this class, I would recommend writing literally everything down from the videos word for word and understand the images / diagrams on the slides. His exams are straight from those videos, and if you took the time to understand every little detail, you'll do great. He can be very tricky at times, but if you really know your stuff, you'll be ok.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HPhys - ladies and gents, times are trying and I know you're probably taking this course during a busy course-work load but listen to me when I say this course is incredibly worthwhile of your utmost respect and appreciation. Dr. Tandy while being a very busy man, and not very open to "after-class" questions or even during class unless its the review day, will be one of the best lecturers you might experience in your lifetime as a student. I didn't appreciate this gem of a professor until I was in a masters course and felt overwhelmed by how complicated the material was being presented. Then I took out my handy Tandy notebook from HPhys and understood things once more with way more clarity and appreciation for his teaching style / organization / jokes. Please don't be discouraged by the course set up and instead embrace it as a learning experience. I wish I could personally thank Dr. Tandy but I guess this will do.   - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:H phys - I was afraid to take this class, but its not bad. The four tests are very straightforward. You just have to memorize every bit of material on the videos he gives you (Which is a lot, but not overwhelming). The only questions i missed on tests were from the AWFUL WORDING. He needs to fix that! The final was a little more difficult than I thought. Just do notes on each video, memorize them, then maybe rewatch all the videos on fast speed before the tests. Go to SI! He doesn't do office hours besides to go over tests. You learn from the videos and the SI, not lecture.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:H-Phys - Human Physiology at this level is not a challenging subject and it would be a breeze to watch Tandy's videos a few times and then be able to go up and lecture on the same content with what feels like a genuinely thorough understanding. The catch is that Tandy writes his tests so that only A students can get A's on them. You can only miss 5 questions per test, each test (excluding the final which is 100 questions), and still make an A. I only got a B+ on one exam, simply because of how tricky his wording is AND including the fact that we are not allowed to ask him clarifying questions during the exam so as to make the atmosphere similar to what you will face during a standardized test, but whatever, annoying. Key tip: think like Tandy.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HPHYS- BIO 3322 - Key facts about this class and how to get an A: Guess what, It is possible to do very well in this class! (1) he’s not very helpful; he will only “respectfully” answer your questions during class- not after class, and definitely not during his office hours. But he’s a great lecturer. All lectures are posted on canvas, but go to class anyway and use it as a review session. (Skipping a few lectures doesn’t hurt, but make sure u keep up with the content) (2) there is no HW, no quizzes, no practice tests. 4 exams + 1 cumulative final will determine your grade. My exam scores: (B+, A, A, A and a B+ on the final), so do well on at least 3 exams to give yourself a nice buffer for the final exam; each exam makes up 20% of your grade (3) tests: typically 50 multiple choice q’s; the final has 100 questions (multiple choice and some difficult matching) (4) how to study: there is no book. Watch all the online video lectures that he posts on canvas at least 2-3 times. Make your own outline of these videos. Test yourself repeatedly using the blank page method: Make sure u can write down every detail from memory. Watch the video and make the outline before the lecture so that you’re not lost. I also went to a few SI sessions to qualify for the review PowerPoint. (Our SI provided a PowerPoint which reviewed all the content for the exam - if u attended 2 SI sessions before the exam) but it’s not mandatory for getting an A. (5) lab is not included in your grade, and lab does not need to be taken with the course. This is a new change that began spring 2019. So don’t expect lab to help pull your grade up (6) Tandy always advises students to get a study group. Maybe a study group might help you- but I’m the type of student who studies better alone- so that’s exactly what I did. You know yourself- Do what works for you. This is everything I did to make an A in the class. (See #4) The content is not challenging. It’s the amount of information + the wording on the exams that makes this course tricky, but If I can do it, you’ll be just fine too. - Siggy B  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3322 - Dr. Tandy is the worst professor I have ever had in my entire academic career. He is disrespectful to his students and talks down to them. You are not allowed to ask him questions in office hours. His tests cover material that is not in the course materials anywhere. He posts his lectures online which is helpful but he does not give you any other resources and he does not allow his SI to give out practice tests. Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. It will ruin your semester.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:3322 - Dr. Tandy is an AMAZING lecturer. He really knows the material well. Like many people have said, his personality is not very nice but he is very professional. In order to study for this class and do well, I highly recommend you take notes on EVERYTHING in his videos. Studying the power point slides of the videos will not even get you a passing grade. Going to class will ensure you get an A but he does not check attendance. You could probably still get a B without going to many classes because all of the class material is posted online in his video lectures. I think he said 25% of people make an A in the course and 25-30% of people make a B.If you put in the work you can still get an A or B. He only has office hours to review the test but you are supposed to only ask him questions in class but not office hours. He is very unavailable but it is understandable because he has 200+ students and he works as a surgeon.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 3341 - Dr. Tandy is an amazing lecturer. The videos he posts on canvas are easy to follow and if you memorize literally everything on the videos, you will do fine. His tests can be a bit tricky, so I recommend getting a good night's sleep before the tests so you can navigate through it. I procrastinated and stayed up late for one exam, and it prevented me from making an A in the class. I would say that it is just as much a reading comprehension test as it is a human physiology test. He doesn't drop any of the exams, and the only things graded are the 5 exams you take, so there is little room for error. He is not the friendliest but don't let it bother you. It's just how he is. This has been one of my favorite classes I've ever taken at Baylor and if you are at all interested in the human body I would highly recommend taking it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3322 - Dr. Tandy: great lecturer, horrible person. His lectures, which he also posts online as lecture videos, are easy to follow and he's great at explaining pretty complicated concepts. His tests come 100% from these online lectures, which is great (even though there is a TON of information on them). However, he is probably the rudest, most condescending, and most arrogant man I have ever met. While he was asking a girl some (pretty difficult) questions, she said "um" "like" a couple of times in her answer. He then proceeded to play us a YouTube video about how millennials don't know how to speak. Whenever someone asks a question that he does not deem worthwhile of his time, he either doesn't respond or just shakes his head and tells them "no". When a friend walked in at 1:59 for our 2:00 class, he told her (in front of 250 people) that late students need to sit in the back of the lecture room. It seems pretty obvious that he hates teaching here and probably just does it so his sons get discounted tuition, idk. I've *heard* that he's nicer in his office hours but honestly am too scared to speak to him one-on-one so I cannot confirm. His tests: The good news is that all of the information comes from the videos he posts online. The bad news is that his questions consist of A) B) C) A&B) A&B&C), in which one word will be changed ("always" instead of "sometimes" or "very" instead of "mildly"). In other words, they are designed to be confusing and not to test what you know. It's possible to get a good grade if you memorize every second of the videos. To summarize: While he's a great lecturer and shares interesting/helpful clinical experiences to learn the material, he's undoubtedly the worst person I've interacted with at Baylor and I can't really believe that he's allowed to work here. PS. He doesn't require class attendance, which is against school policy, so if anyone in the dean's office happens to see this feel free to use it against him.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:Bio 3422 - James Tandy is truly the worst person in the entire world. The material isn't terrible difficult to understand he is just such a loser when it comes to wording the questions. His exams are meant to make you fail. I am really disspointed Baylor has a man like Tandy on its staff but it's not surprising. Truly the worst professor I've ever met. I take my classes through OALA and I made a good grade on one of his exams and he said, and I quote, "It doesn't really count becasue you got accomadations now does it." Sorry I have dyslexia James and have a lot more trouble reading questions. This man is truly horrible and I am so excited to never speak to him ever again.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:H Phys - Dr. Tandy is not a warm and friendly professor, but he is an amazing teacher/lecturer. His class was very engaging and the material was applicable. I got two A-, 1 A and one B- (plus an 88 on the final). It was ultimately my lab grade that helped a TON! Just watch his online videos once before attending class while taking good notes as you go, generally, pay attention in class (I didn't take notes, only listened), study with friends so you can talk aloud, and rewatch his videos on double speed a few days before the exams. This class isn't that hard..there isn't any tricky info. It's only challenging because his tests questions are very specific (not as specific as Moehnkes tho!). That's why my lowest test grade was the first test. Read the questions carefully, be prepared and you'll be fine. I took this class alongside another upper-level chemistry course and still managed an A in both, so it's completely manageable.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 3422 - Hphys!! I really loved this class. Dr. Tandy is a great professor and has so much knowledge. I found his lectures to be engaging and entertaining. There is a lot of material and some of it is pretty hard. His tests are tricky but there is no reason you won't do well. I usually studied the notes I took in class, read through the book, and listened to his lectures again. It also really helps to study with other people. This class is not as hard as people say! Do not accept defeat and work your butt off. My lowest test grade was the first because I had no idea what to expect and did not study enough. The lab is 20% of your grade and will really help boost your average. I honestly wish this class was 2 semester!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3422 - Watch his lecture videos he posts online to do well on his tests. I would’ve made an A if I had done that for the first two tests. Looking over the material before class helps too. I honestly think dr. tandy is the messiah, would trust him to save my life, and am honered to have learned from him.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 3422- Human Phys - Dr. Tandy is a very cool professor to take a course from. His lectures are very interesting and he made many references to his previous medical experiences. As for the course, it is 20% lab and 80% lecture. Lab is relatively easy and consists of quiz, assignments, 2 lab reports, and a final presentation. The lecture has 4 50-question multiple choice exams along with a 100 question final. There is no textbook to buy for the course. Tandy posts his 200 page lecture notes on canvas and the lab manual is posted on canvas as well. To best succeed in this course, you need to read the lecture notes before class to get an idea of what Tandy will be talking about. You also need to take great notes during the lecture, as Tandy only puts material that he lectures over on tests. The tests cover a large amount of material, and Tandy demands that you know the material cold to do well on his exams. The Kidney exam was by far the hardest. Tandy is the best professor that has ever walked this Earth.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-05-09

Comments:BIO 3342 - Fantastic professor. Dr. Tandy ACTUALLY teaches his students and cares that they understand the material. He posts all of his notes, posts videos where he basically walks you through the lecture, lets you record the actual lecture, etc. He is a surgeon ENT so he will not be available on demand, only during office hours. This makes a lot of people mad but it's not a big deal. Exam 1 and Exam 3 are the easiest exams, so study hard to make A's... Exam 2 and Exam 4 are the hardest so study hard to make B's. The final had a lot of information but he told us what would be on it. Lab is super easy I got a really high A but also had a fantastic TA who will be laving Baylor after this semester. I ended with an 86, unfortunately he does not assign B+ to anyone below an 88.5... learn and study the material as you go for best results.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:HPhys - Honestly Tandy was the worst professor I have ever had at this Univeristy. The material really isn't that hard he's just such a tool when it comes to wording questions. Out of a 50 question test around 30 of them will be "Which one is NOT the answer" or questions with answer choices of "A, B, AB, None of the above." He's also the most self righteous man in the world that could literally do no wrong. I would rather have dinner with a Westboro Baptist Church member than Dr. Tandy because at least they talk about other people than themsleves. I truly hated this class soley because Dr. Tandy but If I'm ever leathally ill I will probably go visit him because he is God himself and may choose to heal me.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:3422 - For many, this is the first actually "tough" BIO class. Just go to class, record his lectures, go over his PowerPoints, and attend SI. If you need clarification, refer to the Notes he posts on Canvas and/or go to his office hours. The lab should be an easy A as long as you follow directions, read for the weekly quiz, and turn in your stuff on time. Not hard to make a B, but definitely requires good study ethic to make an A - many people study regularly. For a B, just study a day before the exam and try to make a solid grade on the lab portion.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3422 - This course and Tandy are not that bad!! I really don't know why people complain so much. It can be tricky but if you study a decent amount for the exams (I studied a few hours each day for a couple days before) then you'll be fine. Don't be intimidated by him, he's not as mean and scary as he seems.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-11-04

Comments:BIO 3422 - not as bad as everyone says it is, average for tests were in low 80s which is reasonable. read the notes and powerpoints before class, underline things that he mentions during class and record the lectures. Then before the test just reread the material and relisten to the lectures. The practice test from SI is also pretty helpful. The material itself is not hard, but the test question can be tricky. Make sure to read questions carefully and differentiate between everything because alot of the things in this class are similar.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-09-18

Comments:3422 - What makes this class difficult isn't necessarily the content, but the way Tandy writes his tests and the manner in which he questions you over the material. The tests are just as much reading comprehension exams as they are physiology exams because of how intricately worded his questions are. There is no dropped exam so your room for error is low, but the lab is worth 20% and it's very easy to get an A in. The final is also 100 questions and far easier than the regular exams, so it is possible to do well on it. Study hard, study in groups, and SLOW DOWN AND READ THE QUESTIONS, and making an A is very possible. As far as Tandy goes, he's a great teacher but a tough guy to actually like.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-07-05

Comments:3422 - It's unfortunate that Dr. Tandy is the H. Phys professor because while he is very knowledgeable about the subject and has very educational lectures, it is very apparent that he doesn't have his heart in teaching. He is very rude and does not like office hours, he will always try to get you out of the door as quickly as possible. He also does not really explain things very well if you are having trouble with a concept, he pretty much just repeats what he said in lecture if you ask him a question during office hours. The tests (5 of them including the final) were not too bad though (usually around an 80 average), but there are many questions that have answer choices with very tricky wording. Overall just get a smart friend, read the lecture notes and attend class and you will probably be fine  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-06-23

Comments:BIO3422 - Tandy is a pretty good professor, you just need to realize he's here to teach you, not to be your best friend. He can come across as a jerk sometimes, but it's really just because he wants you to learn the material well. If you ask him about something not relevant to what he's teaching he'll blow you off. If you record his lectures, re-listen to them before the next class (don't get behind) and take detailed notes over everything he says, you should do well. He provides a 200 page packet of notes in place of a textbook, but there's so much additional information you don't need to know that I would recommend not even bothering with those. Just make sure you know everything he says in lecture and everything that's on the power points he puts on Canvas (which go with the lecture). If you can explain everything in detail to a friend, you'll be in good shape for the exams. The final covers a lot of material, but it doesn't go into as much detail as the regular exams, and it's only weighted at 16% (same as the other 4 exams). The lab is pretty easy, just do the work and you'll get an A for that. I think the average grade on the lab final for my section was a 94 because they added 10 points to everyone's grade for doing the course eval. My biggest complaint about this class would be Tandy's availability, but that's really out of his control because he's a practicing physician when he's not teaching. He does try to make himself available before and after class, but for ~250 students, it's really not enough time for everyone to see him. There's actually quite a bit of overlap between this class and biochem, so if you're going to take them at the same time, it's definitely not impossible to do well in both. This class is touted as one of the hardest bio classes, but the test averages were like 79/80 on every exam, which is pretty good.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-05-08

Comments:3422 - First of all, stop listening to these people who got an A. There is literally only like 10-15 of these people in the usual class of 250. This class is not easy and one of the hardest ones I have taken so far. I just now figured out how to study for the tests. Record his lectures. I usually write down everything he puts on his slideshow before the lecture and then underline everything he mentions. His notes have a lot of unnecessary information, so don't waste your time memorizing them like I did. I hated his "textbook" and I would recommend getting a normal Human Physiology text book so you can understand concepts better. I am usually the type to do well by just staring at the wall, however this is not the case in this class. You must study or you will fail. Guaranteed. Oh, and lab was my grade savior. I ended up with a 93 in the lab that pulled my grade up a ton. Be careful of taking other hard classes in the same semester as this. Also don't be terrified. I work all weekend and sometimes during the week, so I had way less time than less to study and I still survived. You can do it, Don't freak out.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2016-11-08

Comments:3422 - This is a pretty challenging course, and it's definitely a major step up from the likes of Genetics and Bio 1 & 2. I did not think Tandy was as mean as everybody else claimed - he's actually quite friendly and patient when he calls on you during the review days of class (though that doesn't make it less intimidating). I think he's definitely cocky and a little pretentious, and in office hours he will spend as little time with you as possible because he is VERY busy. I think the most fool-proof and successful ways to study for his exams are to go over his lecture slides (posted under modems) and know them VERY well, read everything in his free notes packet that he doesn't explicitly tell you will not be on an exam and go over key concepts verbally with others. Don't listen to the reviews that say the course is easy because it isn't, evident by the fact that only 12 out of over 230 students qualified for rec letters last semester. Don't listen to the reviews that say this class is impossible, either, because he never EVER needs to curve his exams, as the averages are always within a fair range. There are four exams, none dropped, and a final. There is also a lab worth 20% that's not difficult and even fun at times - try to get a good group to work with! Study hard. Don't be intimidated by Dandy Tandy. Good luck!  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:Bio 3422 - Disclaimer: Before you look at his 60s rating and run, look at the scores individually. Dr. Tandy has 4/5 stars on teaching ability. The lower stars come because this class DOES require your time, and he does not have set office hours as he is a practicing MD (however, I gave him a 4/5 because he sets aside time when you come in to office hours to go over every question you missed on the exam and explain why the correct answer is correct). I\'m taking H-phys over the summer and I\'ve got to say that it\'s been one of the best decisions of my college career. This is a class with a lot of material to cover, but it is not a difficult class. His exams are fair, and he only tests you over what he lectures over (so record his lectures and listen to them again before the exam). The grade consists of 4 exams and a final (each 16% of the grade), and 20% lab grade. No homework, no extra credits. He doesn\'t curve. Like everyone has been saying, when you\'re studying, make sure you can rephrase/tell a friend all of the concepts in your own words. I found it helpful to use a whiteboard in the library and write concepts out. This class is really what you make of it- the effort you put in, the grade you will get out.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-06-24

Comments:BIO 3422 - Read the notes and discuss the material with your friends. If you do this a week or two before the tests they will not be that difficult. The final is worth just 16%, so your grade for the course is practically made after the fourth exam. Do not get behind early- the course is fairly cumulative. The lab was enjoyable, but the quizzes can be difficult, don't underestimate them. There is really no excuse to not get at least a B in this course- it's hyped as one of the hardest premed courses, but as long as you have decent study skills you should have no problem at least knocking on the door for an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:H-phys - In the realm of hard science classes, not a difficult course. Take Biochemistry with Jonklaas then try to complain about Tandy's "hard" tests lol. Not a bad class, you'll learn a lot. He does think he's better than you and will make sure that you know it. Not helpful in office hours.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3422 - Very fair class. Do exactly what he says: record his lectures, when you're done studying review out loud with a friend what you're going over if you can't elaborate it out loud you really don't know it. As far as "randomly" called on, he calls on you ONLY if you signed/circled your name at the start of the semester denoting that A. You want a rec letter from him B. That you will score high on your exams C. That you will be ready one lecture day before the class test is given (yes this means if the test is on a Tuesday and ¾ of the tests this year were on a Tuesday you need to be ready for the test 5 days in advance for that Thursday question session). I signed up for a LOR and did extremely well in this class. I am personally glad he puts these requirements on it, because it helps you become a better student and more confident in your abilities (as you answer in front of 230 other pre-meds). Lastly, yes he won’t be your best friend but you don’t need a best friend you need a teacher and I can assure you he definitely teaches you. Overall this class has been one of my favorite classes so far in undergrad.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3422 - Professor Tandy is a capable lecturer, but that's about all you're going to get out of this class. He doesn't provide adequate office hours, it's literally a mad dash to his office after class to review exams. The review sessions he holds in-class before exams are more stressful than useful, as he calls on random students in a room of about 300 of you. The notes he gives you in lieu of an actual "textbook" cover everything in the course, but they're not particularly well-written or well-organized. It's not impossible to get an A in the course. In fact I think most people get A's and B's. However, this depends on your ability to review the material before the lecture and again after the lecture. If you fall behind and cram for tests at the last minute, you ARE going to struggle with this course. The lab is easy enough if you put minimal effort into it. It makes up 20% of your final grade in the course which is a nice buffer since the tests can be tricky. Overall, it's a good course, but it stands to improve in a lot of ways.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3422 - He is a good lecturer and very knowledgable about the material, but he fails at pretty much everything else. Tandy is the type of person who would accidentally ram into your car while it's in the parking lot and then find a way to blame you for it. The only grades for his class are 4 hard exams and a final. Not only does he not drop a single grade, but he doesn't curve or give "+" grades. Most of his test question are worded extremely complex so you're gonna have to know the material inside and out to do good on them. Here's how I rank the exams as far as difficulty ( Easiest-- 3<2<1<4 --Hardest)  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3422 - Yes the rumors are true, Tandy is condescending and thinks very much of himself. However, he is an excellent lecturer. His test are challenging, but they are a very good measure of how much you know. You will do fine if you put forth the time and effort. He does not baby his students and is very helpful during office hours. I highly recommend pre-med students take this class before the MCAT, it will be VERY helpful. Overall, I loved this class and thought it was incredibly interesting. The only complaint I have about this class is the lab, it was very tedious and hardly did anything to help me retain content.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:H Phys - Tandy was great. I took him over the summer and that was by far my favorite class. I learned so much. Beware, he's a bit of a jerk. Questions aren't his favorite and because he is a practicing doctor he doesn't have much time. The good news is he is incredibly helpful when he does. he sets time to individually go over your exams and highlights the questions you missed and explains why each of them was wrong. It was super helpful when it came time for the final . Taking it over the summer was rough because it was an insane amount of material in a very short time frame. I took it with another class and that's probably why I didn't do as well in this one. Regardless, I would recommend Tandy to everyone, just prepared to work hard. he won't budge when it comes to your performance lacking.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:3422 - I love Dr. Tandy. He is a very excellent lecturer. He tells you outright in the lectures what are important and the degree to which you should learn it. He seems to care about you learning the material, but he is very busy, so his office hours are practically non-existent. I would recommend taking EXCELLENT notes during the lecture, then go over the notes while going over the powerpoints. I was making an A in this class, but I wasn't trying as hard in the lab so I got a B. This class is very doable. You just have to make sure you know the material very well.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3423 - This was best class I have taken at Baylor. Dr Tandy\'s lectures were always well organized and very interesting. As a premed I loved the ways he would try to relate things we were learning to real life things in medicine. As an earlier rating stated, he treats students like adults. He clearly states his expectations and then holds you accountable. He gives 4 tests and a final which make up 80% of grade. He does not curve texts but they are are fair. Questions usually require you to apply concepts, not just recite back memorized material. The last lecture day before many tests he would use half of the lecture time to answer any questions we had. He has office hours to go over missed questions on the previous test. His office hour availability is somewhat a problem because there are so many students wanting to go over their tests, but he does the best he can with this due to his commitments to his medical practice. I know that friends of mine who are now in medical school say what they learned in his class placed them way ahead of others. They even still use his notes as a reference. Lab comments others have stated I would agree with but overall the course was still my favorite.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3422 - Yes Dr. Tandy thinks he is god, and yes that does get old after 5 minutes. This class covers a lot of material like any other biology class. Be prepared to study several days in advance if you want to do well. I did think there was some variation in the test difficulty with the first two tests being pretty easy. The third test over endocrine and GI was the most challenging. The renal test was super easy, I only missed one question on it. I never could find the best way to study for the tests though. I would say that memorizing the power points is probably the most effective thing to do. Literally get to where you know what words will be on the next slide. Studying his notes is helpful but there is a lot more information in them than you need for the tests. I often found myself getting bogged down memorizing the details of everything when there wouldn't be a very detail oriented question on the tests. The final covered the big topics, but the answer choices were tricky. The lab is not cool. I had a good TA but it still didn't make up for how annoying the quizzes were. You literally have to memorize every sentence word for word from the lab manual to make As on the quizzes. Make sure you don't have any slackers in your group because that will destroy your lab average. I spent 8 hours and sometimes more writing lab reports. I woulda write between 12-14 pages for each one which is more than most people, but I can't complain because I got high As on all of them. The lab final wasn't terrible, in fact when I took it I thought it was so easy that I went through it way to fast and ended making dumb mistakes and ended up with a B on it. Overall, one should see this class as rite of passage for bio majors and/or pre-med students. If you fail out early on in the class don't feel too bad many, many people retake it. Good luck.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3422 - The only bad thing about this class is the lab. It's worthless and time-consuming and just like almost every other lab I've taken, the coordinators should be ashamed of it. Dr. Tandy, on the other hand is awesome. He is such a good teacher and he has tons of real-life knowledge about H. Phys. and medicine in general since he is a Medical Doctor. His lectures are really interesting and he presents the material in a way that you can understand well. A lot of people think he's rude. That thought never would have entered my mind if I didnt read it here. He was really nice when I went in to look at tests, and he never made me feel stupid. All his tests are about the same difficulty, and if you do well on the 4 tests, you shouldn't really have to study for the final. Like every biology class though, you'll have to put in a good amount of effort. It's not bad though since most of it is interesting. This is a fun class. Enjoy it.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3422 - This man is terrible. First, his exams are so tricky... they do not measure your comprehension of the material but rather if you have good test taking skills or not. If you make a 69.99 he will not pass you.. If you do not receive HIGH grades on the exams he treats you like Sh*t. He is so condescending. He has had an enormous amount of success and he has an elitist personality. He encourages cheating. Students run around with his old exams and he won\'t do anything to them because they are the ones with the highest grades; however, he will tell be condescending to you for not doing well. Study in groups but more importantly study the powerpoint slides.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3422 - Dr. Tandy is a wonderful professor. He is very straight forward and tells you exactly what he expects. There are 4 exams and a final. His exams are 50 questions multiple choice. Final was 100 multiple choice (comprehensive) The exams were pretty fair. Read the question CAREFULLY. Sometimes the wording confused me. I studied his notes mainly and looked at his slideshows a few hours before the exam. I made A's on the first three exams by studying 2 nights in advance and I made a B on the last exam by studying the night before. I did the best on the cardio exam and worst on the renal exam. It is NOT as hard as everyone makes it out to be. There are some tricky questions, but not too terrible. Just take it SLOWLY and THINK it through. I just speed through the exam and misread/misunderstood the questions. I had an easy TA for lab so it worked out great for me. I had friends that spent 6 hours writing a lab report. I only spent 1-3 hours and made A's on all the lab reports. MEMORIZE the lab manual for the lab quizzes. They were mostly fill in the blank. The lab exercises were pretty easy as well. Dr. Tandy is great, but he's pretty intimidating during office hours. One time, I missed 3 questions and he drilled me on them when I went to see him. He made me feel dumb, but right as I get up to leave, he would say "good job." The lines are always really long because of his limited office hours. (He's a practicing surgeon) I took this class at the same time I took biochem and I devoted most of my time to biochem. It's doable! Although, I was stressed out most of the semester. Everything worked out great and I made A's in both.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Bio 3422 - Yes, Tandy can be condescending. Yes, he has terrible office hours. And yes, he is arrogant. However, he is by far the best lecturer I've ever had the privilege to listen to. He doesn't go off on tangents in class, and he is very succinct in explaining concepts. Everything he tests you over, he will clearly explain in class. So make sure you pay attention. It's actually a little hard to NOT pay attention especially because all of the concepts you learn in this class are so interesting. If you are pre-med, you are going to love this class. I found it best to bring my "textbook" (Tandy gives you 200 pages worth of notes) and marking the sections that he covers in class. If he says something that isn't on the powerpoint, I would write it down on the margins. I made solid A's on all of the exams as well as the final by doing this. It helps you know what material to study over for the test. As far as the tests go, I would say that they are all equal in difficulty. The lab for this class just overall sucks. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to get an A in this lab, even with a strict TA (I had Kathy, who was a nitpicky grader). Memorize every word in the lab manual for the quizzes. The finals (for both the lab and the class) weren't bad at all. They were fair exams. Overall, Tandy is a great professor and you should definitely take this class. One final comment: Tandy is a practicing physician, which is why his office hours are limited. This may be why he can get a little irritated sometimes. Every T/Th before and after class, he has to robotically explain why people missed certain problems on the exam to over 200 neurotic pre-meds.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3422 - This class all around just sucks. I actually did decent on all of Tandy's tests. I made a B on all of them. The lab is what brought my grade down. A lot of people will say Tandy's tests get harder as the semester progresses. This is actually completely untrue. The renal test isn't any harder than the first test. The renal isn't the hardest, and neither is the cardiac. They're all exactly the SAME. So don't believe it when like a billion people tell you this is the case. So just study hard and re-read all of his notes, and you'll be fine on the tests. As far as the lab goes, the lab reports aren't bad at all. I wrote them all the day they were due and my average on the lab reports was an 18.25 out of 20. Just don't get stuck with a stupid group. Group work counts as a large portion of your grade in lab, so if you get a sucky group well your grade will suck. Lab counts as 20% of your hphys grade. So even with B's on all of Tandy's tests including the final and A's on the individual lab reports, I made a 79.4 in the class because my lab grade was like a 75.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:3422 HPhys - Tandy treats you like an adult, not a child. You shouldn't expect any true mentor to baby you by holding your hand through everything. He is the MOST engaging speaker I've probably ever had in my four years here. He lectures very well, his slides and notes do an excellent job, and you don't have to buy a book. Go to his lectures and pay attention. You can't just skim his material and expect an "A" -- I'm saying that because that's what I did and got a "C". The tests are not the easiest, but they aren't ridiculous. They are fair and truly make you think. I'd say they remind me of MCAT questions. Many claim he's rude, I claim he's just an assertive personality. And I felt his "supposedly" rude jokes were hilarious. He likes to jab at students every now and then. Learn to laugh. There's no book, no assigned reading, just lectures and exams. The Lab is honestly a waste of time because the experiments are so inconclusive. You're better off just reading the lab book, but they make you "pretend" to prove it experimentally. The TA's take points off your lab reports wherever they can find it.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:H.Phys - I am here to set the record straight regarding Dr. Tandy's H.Phys class. :] I am not the brightest of the bunch, however, I found Dr. Tandy's class to be the most interesting and intellectually stimulating class I have ever taken at Baylor, and I managed to pass with a B (since he doesn't give pluses!) Dr. Tandy is great at explaining the material from his powerpoints. He is clear and concise and will always emphasize the points that you need to know for the tests. He doesn't just mean be able to pick them from unrelated multiple choice options. Dr. Tandy really wants you to know the material so his multiple choice questions consist of A. Thing A B. Thing A and B C. Not Thing A and B but C and D. None of the above. Some people take this as him trying to trick you but in reality he wants you to really learn the material and apply the information on the MCAT. The MCAT is just as tricky! Trust me guys, his class helped me SO much on the MCAT. I'm so glad he really made me learn the material. I managed to pass the class by reviewing the powerpoints and taking notes from them before class. I filled in my notes with more notes in class and I reviewed them after class. It didn't take that long. Also, I went to one or two review sessions with the Honors Kids and I have to say they sucked. I'm no good at studying with people so I studied by myself. I simply read and reread the typed notes from Tandy and my own. I made sure I knew the information back and forth. My test scores ranged from 71 to 96 so the tests are definitely doable. Tandy is a great professor!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3422 - This is the most interesting course I have had so far. You will learn a lot of information that should help in the MCAT (so I heard). His multiple-choice tests get more difficult as the course goes. The hardest test is the Renal/Endocrine system. Tandy is in love with hormones and conceptual topics. Final Exam was 100 questions and will be easy if you did well on the previous exams. His office hours (or lack thereof) suck. Honor Kids' Study Sessions suck. Basically learn the material by yourself and quiz yourself and you should do fine. No textbook. Oh yeah, Lab quizzes and reports determine your Lab grade, which is 20% of the class. Lab quizzes are fill in the blank and straight off the manual, so memorize.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3422 - Dr. Tandy is smart and can clearly and concisely explain his lectures, however, he is a very arrogant and unhelpful man one-on-one. I loathed this class. He will (and I mean will) trick you on the tests. Word of advice: if you are an independent study kind of person, do NOT go to the study sessions held by the honor students. I went about this class the wrong way. I made a way better test grade studying by myself than when studying with others. He claims in the syllabus that your test grades will "exclusively" depict how hard you worked, but in fact, it doesn't. It just shows if you were able to find the right way to study for his class. Do not make the mistake I did and expect the study sessions will help.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:3422 - Tandy is a good professor but he is very arrogant and rude when you go talk to him. He thinks he is better than everyone bc he is surgon. His tests are super hard (unless you are one of the kids who study everyday) and he is super rude when you go ask him questions in his office. To do good on the tests, memorize and understand all his notes!! Then go over it with a group of people. He says he does not try to trick you but his questions are tricky on his tests. Overall study hard and you will do fine, and if you dont then dont expect any help from him!  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:BIO 3422 - Dr. Tandy is profoundly articulate in his lectures. He is a down to earth guy in class and lectures in such a way that breaks it down in an easy to understand manner. He is extremely smart and knows his stuff. Tandy is a practicing surgeon as well as a part time professor at Baylor. In class he is funny and great to listen to. But in a one on one conversation, he can be a bit critical and arrogant. I went over my first test with him and he sped me through it in less than 3 minutes. I couldn't remember a thing and didn't go see any of my other tests after that. I just didn't get a good vibe or benefited from it. Other than that. There were 5 tests, each worth 16%. The nice thing about this class is that he provides you with a free book written by him and the material on his test is mainly covered over it as well as the video powerpoints he posts up. The lab itself was worth 20% and could affect you if you don't have a fair teacher like I did (Anica Debelica is the best). You will have to write lab reports but I thoroughly enjoyed the lab aspect because it teaches you real life applications. Bottom line, Tandy doesn't give any "+". It is either an A, B, C, D, or an F. I should have ended up with a C since I was bordering but I guess Tandy knows me well enough to give me a B. That was a nice surprise. In my opinion, Dr. Tandy is one of the best lecturers at Baylor. Just don't expect the tests to be so easy or straight forward. Good luck. ~ T's Review.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 3422 - Dr. Tandy is a wonderful lecturer. He is really good at explaining complex concepts in a simple manner. However, he is a very rude man. He is never available. He is absolutely unwilling to prepare you for the exam during his few office hours. The only thing you have time for during his office hours is to look over your past exams. His exams are not impossible if you study hard for them. The lab is really annoying so be sure to take it seriously. It can determine whether you get an A or a B.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3422 - Tandy is a very smart man; he knows what he is talking about and is a good lecturer. However, he is a practicing surgeon, and this means he has very limited office hours. His tests are all multiple choice and relatively easy if you pay attention in lecture and study his notes. There is no textbook required for the class; everything comes from his lecture notes posted on Blackboard. Lab can be a horrible experience if you don't get the right TA. Be prepared to memorize the whole lab manual; for lab quizzes they basically take random sentences from the lab manual and blank out random words and you have to fill in the blanks. The quizzes are usually over the most trivial, unimportant information. The TAs won't tell you what they want on the lab reports but count off ridiculous numbers of points for the tiniest of errors. The lab literally dropped me a whole letter grade. The bottom line is this: the lecture is great, but lab sucks.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 3422-H PHYS - I really despised this class. A word to the wise: I am a psych major (not pre-med) and I had a choice between BIO 3422 and Chordate anatomy (or something like that). I have talked to a lot of people in Chordate and they said it was pretty straight forward, a lot better than Human Physiology. I do not like how condescending Dr. Tandy is. The tests are hard, but doable. It is definitely possible to get a B or an A, but I did poorly on one test, which kinda screwed me over. You have 4 tests and a final (all worth 16%) and your lab grade (20%). There are no drop tests. The lab grade definitely can bring up your grade, so be sure to not slack off. He did not take attendance this semester, but he has in previous semesters.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:3422 - Very great teacher his lectures are very interesting. That said, he practically has NO office hours because he is a surgeon. So if you want to review your test or get help good luck fitting that in his 1 hour time slot if you have other classes. He also just randomly cancels his office hours some days on very short notice. This isn't medical school but he sure makes it seem like it. His tests are ridiculous and if you are doing bad in the class don't even bother talking to him about it because he will make you feel so stupid. Good luck with this.......There is no book and he tells you to just study some notes he made himself.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:BIO 3422 - Dr. Tandy is a great professor. He doesn't baby his students, he excepts his students to study hard and ask for help when they need it. There is a lot of material, but it's interesting so just commit time to learning it. You don't have to buy the book, just use Dr. Tandy's notes. Pay attention to the examples he gives during lecture because they show up on the tests. The tests are mostly critical thinking, not just memorization. STUDY FOR THE TESTS IN GROUPS!!! Get into a good study group and quiz each other until you know the material forwards and backwards. If you email Dr. Tandy he can suggest people in class that you can study with. The lab is super easy and a great way to boost your grade if you do well. I really enjoyed this class.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 3422 - Tandy's class was fine, really interesting stuff, good lectures, but Tandy in person was pretty awful. Overly sarcastic with a bit of a superiority complex. Tests were fair. He goes over the top 10 missed test questions in class . . . but you don't get your test back. Ever. Even if you go in to see it in his office, he will only show you your scantron with a bunch of red marks and a blank test. Then he says something like "you missed these five, i went over these three in class . . . the answer to this one was a and the answer to this one was d". Then he kicks you out of his office--whole encounter lasts about three minutes. You have no way to really learn what you missed properly, which is a big problem as the semester goes on. Lab was fine, helped my grade.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:3422 - I thought that this class was difficult, although I knew a number of very intelligent students that made As. There's a ton of information, and if this is your first exposure to human physiology, get ready to work. Overall, Dr. Tandy is a good prof, although he has extremely limited office hours and will only reply to your e-mails IF he deems them worthy enough for a response. Go to class and begin to prepare for each test AT LEAST one week in advance. Study in groups - reliable groups - that seemed to help me somewhat. In my opinion, the first test was the most difficult, although some would argue that the cardio test was the worst. The final is very direct, unlike some of his tests. Good luck!  - Grade In Class:B

He lectures are great and he makes things interesting, lab is busy work but usually a grade booster so do well on the lab reports. Comments:3422 - Dr. Tandy is an amazing professor. He puts about 200 pages of notes on blackboard, and then goes over them in detail during the class. The lecture notes and the slides are what his tests are based on. However, memorizing the notes, without learning the concepts, will not get you an A on his tests. You have to learn the material and be able to apply it to situations. I thought the 3rd test over the heart was the hardest. He gives 4 exams and a final, with the lab grade counting for 20%. Overall, he is a good professor and an A in his class is very possible.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:h phiz - amazing teacher. lab is the most retarded thing ever! complete waste of time, and TAs are bitter bio grad students who are just jealous that they didn't get accepted into med school like students like me. and they try to grade super hard on lab reports to give them a 'power/ego' boast it seems like. sigh.. but the test (real h phiz, Tandy's lecture stuff) was easy. straight from notes/lecture. i'm only got an A because his test were easy, but the lab brought me down to a low A. how embarrassing. not everyone has hours to do lab reports. oh, and the lab quizzes: memorize EVERY word in the lab readins except the words: and, is, or, because that's what's going to be covered on the quiz. they basically block out a random word from the reading and except you to know what it is on the lab quizzes. again: lab sucks. lecture rocks! easy A.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:BIO 3422 - I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Tandy is an excellent professor with a very good sense of humor, though he is often somewhat sharp with people. There definitely is a lot of material to learn, but it all comes straight off of the notes. I paid attention in lecture, but I never took any notes myself. The ones he provides are exactly what will be on the test. He now puts up his lecture slides too, and those are helpful as well, as a general visual aid. It's very doable to make an "A" in Tandy's Human Physiology, though make no mistake: it will require a fairly large amount of studying. In any case, he's quite fair with grading.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3422 - Lots of notes to print out for this class, but it is very helpful to jot down whatever you see in the slides that Tandy presents. His test answers will be in the slides -- after our tests, he take the top ten misses questions and show us exactly where in the slides it was mentioned. His memory is very good. Reading the material won't help. You have to actually understand it and be able to apply it to situations, 'cause that's how most of his questions are. His tests are multiple choice, except for a section on one of the tests. The answers themselves are tricky, so you have to be careful. He kind of goes fast. You can go over your last test during office hours, but he will go over it so fast that you won't remember it that well. He's a smart man but it just seems that sometimes he expects you to be on his level.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3422 - i don't know if i necessarily agree with everything from the previous person, but he/she hit most of the solid points about the class. the tests are involved, and they are not just straight concept questions. you have to correlate material from different sections of the notes on the same question. that said, you do not need the textbook if you go to class. he has numerous descriptive figures that he doesn't source that help out with lectures. contrary to the previous post, tandy's lecture notes do not always correspond to his figures. plus, he jumps around pages (notes not in chronological order), which can get tedious. also, you do not really need to go to class. you just need to study a ridiculous amount, and spreading out over a couple of days probably makes it easier than cramming it in the night before like i did. diagrams about the notes can be found in multiple online sources, and are just as helpful as the book at $100+ less the cost. the first test is easier than the last two and the final, so make sure to study hard for that and get a good grade to help out in the end. the lab final is ridiculous, don't worry too much about trying to get an A. you probably won't, but do not wait until the last minute to do all the lab worksheets. tandy's method forces you to learn the material, and the workings of the human body turns out to be a decent thing to learn about. but, i am glad to no longer be tested over things like how bicarbonate must change back to carbon dioxide before it passes thru the apical membrane. *shakes head*  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 3422 - I'll start by saying that Dr. Tandy is one of the most HUMAN professors at Baylor. (Well he does teach HUMAN phys. but there was no pun intended). What do I mean by that? Well, from the very first day of class, he introduces you to his family (via pics on powerpoint) and makes it very CLEAR that he is a family man. Family is priority #1 in his life, and his career (which also includes being an ENT MD) is second to that. That was one of the most inspiring messages I've gotten throughout my career at Baylor. That all being said... the course is hard. He gives you printed out lecture notes that you can easily follow during lecture, but his lecture is a necessity for your understanding of the material. Don't think you can skip and just survive on his notes alone. What kills me is that there are only 3 exams and a final... and that (plus your lab grade which WILL be a B or lower due to an insane lab final) constitutes your final average. No other grades. No quizzes. No extra credit. NO CURVE. NOTHING. So if you tank one exam (like I did), your grade will ultimately suffer. But from what I hear about the guy that came before Tandy...Tandy is a blessing. I can affirm that... I hate T/R classes but his was the first T/R class that I enjoyed and sat attentively during the whole time. Study like you've never studied before for his hard exams, and you quite possibly could pull out an A. Oh yeah, an added bonus: by the second (yes the SECOND) day of class, he has memorized EVERYONE'S name in the class simply by taking digital pics of the class on the first day. You gotta give him major credit for that. He is obviously doing his part of the bargain by striving to learn who his students are.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3422 - Dr. Tandy is a very good professor. He clearly lays out his expectations and the material. His lectures are very organized and easy to follow. He lifts the material from the book and organizes it well for everyone to follow, then makes effective slides and lecture notes, and posts the notes on Blackboard. Basically read the chapters ahead of time, listen and follow the lectures, and then about week and a half before the test start reviewing using the notes. He holds review sessions that are very helpful. He made an otherwise very difficult class manageable.   - Grade In Class:A

Comments:HFIZZ - Dr. Tandy is a great teacher...maybe the most intellegent professor I've had to date. It is a difficult class, of course, but I think he makes it very possible to survive. The lab, which Dr. Tandy has nothing to do with, is pretty bad, but his lectures do help you out with it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3422 - I enjoyed his class and I think he tried really hard to help us understand the material. It was clear he was trying to help us learn and not trying to weed out any students. I appreciated his fairness in the tests. He clearly states what will be on the test and if you attend all the class times he even has periods where he will review in class, which was really helpful to me. It is a tough course though because of the amount of material that needs to be learned. So make sure to study everyday and review the notes. Dont put off studying until before the tests cause there is just too much info to learn. He is helpful as much as he can be with balancing his practice. But he is accessible by e-mail and responds to those quickly. Also try to go to his office after the tests and he reviews the missed questions with you, that is also very helpful. Overall, i think he cares about us learning and that shows in his attitude towards teaching inside and outside the class.   - Grade In Class:B

Comments:BIO 3422 - Human Physiology is pretty challenging as there is a lot of material--concepts to understand, and facts that simply need rote memorization. Dr. T is helpful in that he makes available an outline that covers the important stuff; i.e., the stuff he will cover on the exam. He gives scantron exams--75 questions which come from a test bank. He is a pretty good lecturer, although it's a challenging task to keep up with 80 minutes of physiology. Since he is a practicing MD, his office hours are not the best, but he is usually available after class. I found it helpful to go to the review sessions that he held prior to the exams, and also to be present the class before the exams because not only does he review, but he goes over actual test questions. It's important that you don't get behind because you don't want to spend the couple of days before the exam reading and learning the material the first time--you want time to actually study.   - Grade In Class:B
