Comments:5312 - Do not and I repeat DO NOT take this course, it is not worth it. First off, the workload is crazy, given it is a graduate class. But my goodness I did not expect this kind of workload and maybe that is to my own fault for not preparing, it's not like I was doing an internship before this or anything. I had Professor Hurtt for AIS and I honestly liked her. She was very sarcastic and harsh at times but ultimately wanted you to succeed as long as you put in the work. However, I don't know what she is on but during this course she has been absolutely unhinged. Maybe it has to do with the fact that this is an online course, but she is actually so vile in the comments she gives on EVERYTHING you turn in. She hides behind the excuse of "this is not graduate level work" instead of directing you or at least hinting at what you did wrong. Also half the assignments have pretty ambiguous instructions so it's honestly a gamble when you submit an assignment because 9/10 it will not be graded and you will be cooked alive about how you did not include certain aspects that were not clearly defined. Also the TA for this class is just as picky as her. Respectfully, you're literally a student same as me, why you acting like that. Take this class if you absolutely have to, but if you have a choice stay away as far as possible.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:5312 - I am going to preface that this is not her class she teaches, another teacher designed the course but she was asked to fill in for a semester. There was a huge workload which is understandable because it is a grad class so that is nothing against her. However, I have never been more scared to turn in an assignment in my life because of the berating I would receive after. I understand this is a graduate class, but there is no reason to be that condescending in your responses to your students. I loved working on the assignments but dreaded being done with them because that meant I was going to get scolded. I would try and go into her office to talk to her and there were times where she made fun of me and told me that she talked to the TA about how funny it was I was asking a question on that assignment, like who says that to someone? Her behavior to responding to students is no way a teacher should be acting to uplift and encourage her students. I felt belittled and discouraged any time I needed to email or talk to her. If she teaches this class again, please please please avoid it for the mental health and wellbeing of yourself. This is no way a professor should be talking to her students like. Everyone in this class has complained about feeling attacked and discouraged to even complete the course. We have never used some of these programs before and she expects us to be experts. Anyway that is all.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3303 - A QUEEN. I had her for AIS and honestly, these reviews do you a disservice because they give you the wrong impression of her. Dr. Hurtt might seem intimidating to you at first but she's actually the sweetest person ever. Get to know her in office hours; it makes the course a LOT less scary, and she truly is a great resource. The workload for ANY AIS course is big!! Don't just hate on her because of the workload. If you make the effort and see her in office hours, this class should NOT be scary to you!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:ACC 3303 - I would highly recommend taking Dr. Hurtt! She truly cares about your success and well-being, and she always made herself available to me if I ever needed help. She's incredibly kind and genuine, and I would encourage you to make an effort to build a relationship with her. The workload in the class is fair and pretty much the same as the other sections of AIS. Exams are somewhat difficult but manageable, and reading the textbook helps tremendously!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3303 - Kathy is awesome! She really wants to get to know you and cares about your success in the class. There is a lot of work, but all the work in AIS is the same. She comes off a bit severe at first, but once you warm up to her she is so kind and caring. She has a great sense of humor and knows her stuff. Communication could be better on the excel projects, but you can honestly Google those. My grade doesn't reflect her teaching ability, she is the best.  - Grade In Class:C+

Comments:ACC 3303 - I am not sure why Dr. Hurtt gets so much crap on here, but for students starting the accounting core I would recommend Hurtt for AIS. Every AIS class does the exact same stuff and everyone takes the same tests regardless of what professor you have so you can't really change the workload or test difficulty by taking a different professor. What I liked about Dr. Hurtt was her willingness to help, especially with the covid situation. I missed a significant amount of class due to covid exposure and Hurtt was super responsive and helpful during that time. She gave all of us her personal phone number so we could text her with questions which was nice because sometimes you need to know stuff quickly and email can be harder to get quick answers with. Lastly, a lot of students complain about her attitude but honestly I saw nothing wrong with it. The people that thought she was mean tended to be less socially aware people who didn't get her sarcasm and didn't know how to take criticism at all. I thought she was super helpful and she's a genuine and kind person. Some of the tests were definitely hard, but most of my friends who did bad only read the bolded parts of the textbook so they missed like half the stuff that was on the exams.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-11-16

Comments:3303 - She completely gave up during the semester. I don't know how the entire department got away with 30 minute lessons and still expect good results. If you ask for help, just know you'll only get sarcasm and personal jabs.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2020-10-29

Comments:AIS - Dr. Hurtt gets a really hard time on here but she is truly one of the best professors I have had at Baylor. Her class is hard but that should be expected in the accounting core. She sets you up well for the exams if you do the homework (even though it isn't graded) and pay attention in class. She is also incredibly helpful in her office hours and truly cares about how you are doing in her class. She spent many late nights and even a few weekend days in the computer lab helping us on projects when she easily could have left and told us to come get help at a normal time. She is amazing and I would take her again in a heartbeat for AIS.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-05-13

Comments:3303 - Kathy can be ruthless when grading but is one of the nicest people in the department. Get to know her and she becomes an allie for you in the ACC department . The class was the hardest class I took at Baylor but Kathy really did all she could to help me out and get an A.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-12-18

Comments:ACC 3303 - Her reviews don't necessarily do her a justice. She's a VERY intelligent person, and truly wants her students to succeed. Her class was a bit stressful at points, but she's super awesome during office hours and, for the most part, graded projects fairly. I would recommend taking her, as I felt she prepared us for tests significantly better than some of the other AIS professors did. The class is hard no matter what, but I liked Kathy :)  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-12-17

Comments:ACC 3303 - This class is insanely boring, and she doesn't help. When you ask questions in class she gives you the most smug response and outwardly shames you for not knowing the answer. One of the toughest graders on projects I've ever seen. She's very rude to students and does not seem to care how we do in the class. Do not take.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-12-16

Comments:3303 - This has been one of my favorite classes ever! Dr. Hurtt is super helpful in office hours and in class. She makes AIS way more bearable. The projects aren't too bad and she is very helpful if you get stuck. She prepares you well for tests. There are some quizzes over reading but they aren't too bad. Homework is never collected but she usually tries to go over it in class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-11-10

Comments:3303 - AIS sucks no matter who you take, but Dr. Hurtt makes the class much more bearable. She is the most caring and helpful professor I've ever had. She regularly stays in the computer lab until 11:00 pm before projects are due helping students -- she even comes up on weekends. She is more than willing to help her students succeed. The subject is boring and a pain to study for, but every accounting major has to take it, so you might as well take it with a great professor! The other professors don't help their students as much as Dr. Hurtt does; in fact, students with different professors go to Dr. Hurtt for help!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2018-12-11

Comments:AIS - AIS is an irritating class. It is not very hard, but it just has a ton of projects/tests. Overall, I think there were 7 tests in this class and a final (but 3 of the tests were Excel-based). This class is the same no matter which professor you take, and since Mrs. Edison (who is a lovely person too) is just getting into her groove of teaching AIS, honestly I would recommend Dr. Hurtt. Any qualms I had in this class mainly had to do with the class structure/tests which are standardized by the entire department and not Dr. Hurtt's fault. Sure Dr. Hurtt isn't the greatest professor BUT I think that's largely due to the material--how do you teach cardinalities? You mainly just learn a lot by practicing yourself. This is largely a teach-yourself course regardless of professor. Also, Dr. Hurtt is SO helpful in office hours! I cannot stress enough, if you are confused or have any questions at all GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Dr. Hurtt really cares about her students and worries about their well-being. In fact, she is so sweet that she sponsors 15 African children. Also, she is serious about her faith, and she prays for us right before we take every test. In this class the Access Database is a killer--nearly everyone I know including myself got B's on it so try to do well on the easier projects, like Quickbooks, to average that grade up. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Hurtt; the course itself is annoying, but Dr. Hurtt is very kind.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2017-12-13

Comments:AIS - Terrible teacher. Shouldn't be allowed any where near a classroom. Very condescending person. All tests for the professors are the same, but she doesn't teach you at all so her class usually has the worst grades. Homework doesn't have to be turned in but they help on the exams. Take another professor and save yourself the headache.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2017-12-03

Comments:AIS - Very irritating class, but prepares you well for real world working. Dr. Hurtt is hard and tries to make her test questions ambiguous, but she told me at the end it was all to prepare us for the real world. She ends up padding your grade at the end usually, I'd definitely take her again.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2016-12-01

Comments:5331 - Dr. Hurtt warned us that this would be a different class, and it was. We (the class) wrote the syllabus and assigned points to what we needed to do. It was frustrating at first, but I can honestly say that this has been my favorite class in all my time at Baylor. I did what interested me - and I could take it as far as I wanted to. A few too many presentations, but aside from that, I really thought it was great class. Hated the 8:00 am time.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-05-09

Comments:3303 - Awesome professor! I learned so much in this class. I have an internship this summer, and EVERYTHING they wanted me to know was covered in this class. You have to watch the videos and be willing to ask if you don't understand, but I thought it was a great class. Tests are hard - but they are the same for both professors.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2016-05-09

Comments:3303 - I think some of these are pretty harsh. She responds quickly to email and I always got the help I needed. This isn't a class where you can catch-up before the exam.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2016-04-11

Comments:ACC 3303 - Dr. Hurtt really isn't all that bad! The comment below makes her seem really hard and unfriendly, but if you make the effort to get to know her she's really awesome! I do agree that her teaching style needs some work and this class will require a lot of outside work in order to succeed, but Dr. Hurtt is available to help and really does want you to do well! As far as the Access and Excel projects go, Dr. Hurtt and Dr. Lail provide some videos of them showing you how to work the programs and honestly, kind of do a lot of the work for you. If you watch those videos, you'll have a pretty good understanding of how to do a majority of the assignments. Yes, her office hours are pretty packed, but she's got a lot of free time during the day and if you just email her and tell her you want to see her, she'll make time for you. I would recommend going in and introducing yourself during the first week of school because she's very personable and loves to chat about life if you'll let her. I also had a family emergency during my semester and she was very accommodating in helping me understand the material I missed. No lie, she's a pretty tough lady and her exams are a little difficult but they're manageable. Lail might be the better choice of professor, but if you get stuck with Hurtt, it definitely will not be the end of the world!  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:ACC 3303 - Dr. Hurtt is the single worst professor that I have experienced at Baylor. It was because of her class that I decided that I no longer wanted to major in Accounting. If you have the extreme displeasure of taking her class, remember this: she DOES NOT teach. You are responsible for teaching yourself most of the material. 90% of class time is spent going over homework. The homework itself isn't overly bad, just time-consuming. You will be constantly bombarded with homework assignments of varying length. The main problem with the homework is that she doesn't teach the subject; you have to first teach yourself before you can do the homework. There is a lengthy project over Microsoft Access as well as a large project over Quickbooks. The Access project is graded incredibly hard and you get NO prior instruction on how to use Access. The only instruction provided is a series of short videos that only show you the BARE MINIMUMS of using Access. Another part of her class requires you to take a timed test in Microsoft Excel without using the mouse. This actually isn't so bad if you prepare. There is also a 4-part Excel assignment that is added to as the semester progresses. This is more time-consuming than outright difficult. The Exams are incredibly difficult. She never prepares people for how confusingly she will word her questions, and asks questions that are incredibly vague. As for availability, Dr. Hurtt is always swarmed with students since she doesn't actually perform her job. To see her during office hours, you'll have to arrive 15+ minutes early. Avoid this class at all costs and take Dr. Lail. He is a far superior person and teacher.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2015-11-10

Comments:3303 - Dr. Hurtt is nice and all, but her class is overly difficult. She tells you that the projects in the class are intended to help your grade, but I didn't know anyone who consistently made A's on projects. The exams are much more difficult than the material we covered in class. Class time wasn't very helpful either. We just spent a lot of time going over homework and did little else. I would definitely recommend taking Dr. Lail over Hurtt.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2013-12-19

Comments:3303 - The worst professor I have had at Baylor! Very inconsistent and mean. Her mood goes up and down and you are going to pay for it. Always pretend to be nice, but indeed, she is so self-centered and nasty. A joke! All my friends hate her.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2011-12-12

Comments:5331 - If you are looking to work your butt off and not see any tangible connection to the grades you receive then this is the class for you. Clearly a disconnect exists between what student turn in and what Dr. Hurtt is looking for? Project grades are like playing russian roulette sometimes you may got a D other times you could get an A with the exact same project just depends on the day. Literally have never worked so hard and felt like it was mostly for not in terms of the grade result I received. Sometimes teachers need to look at the quality of work and not so much the meaningless paper you are supposed to write about it. Take at your own risk and only if you like the idea of fraud. *class changes each summer too so this thing could be completely different next summer since she takes into account student reviews. Our class had a lot to say...  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2011-08-11

Comments:5331 - Wow, the worst experience of my life. Dr. Hurtt was very inconsistent. She said that she would be flexible, but was anything but. The excessive busy-work made learning very difficult. She was mean all the way up to the last week. I guess she realized that her reviews were close and decided to quit being so foul. She brought food three times, and began to act pleasant. Not buying it, can't bribe me out of a horrible review after you have demolished my summer and knowingly put a group of students at a disadvantage in their other classes as well. Just because it is a seminar class, doesn't mean that you have a justification not to teach.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-08-08

Comments:3303 - Honestly, think of miss frizzle from the magic school bus, but rather than ecstatic to have her students learn new things, she is THRILLED to throw you under the bus and make exams more difficult than any material she ever taught for her own sick entertainment. I was making an A the entire semester until the final. She picks favorites, gave students with 87% A's and 86% B's... Not consistent with her grading. Also, there is a book for the class but she will argue and say that the author is wrong all the time, so if you take a test, go off of what she says and not whats in the book because if you use that as your support when discussing the test, she will not take that as substantial evidence for your correct answer. Her mood swings are a tad bit out of control and she has no problem taking them out on her class. good luck in the core, this class is a huge pain, but once you get through it you are done with it. happy accounting.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:3303 - OK, Dr. Hurtt..at the beginning of the semester, she is super jolly, friendly, and a pleasure to listen to. However, once the semester really got rolling it seemed like her goal was to point you the in the wrong direction rather than guide you to success. I will say that she was very helpful at first, helping us out with Peachtree on Saturday, being nice enough to buy us pizza, etc. However, she didn't seem to understand why we weren't doing well on her exams. It wasn't because the material was difficult, but her exams were just plain unfair. The questions she would ask were so vague and often actually led you in the wrong direction. They weren't the types of things you could anticipate, though..they were just trick questions and she would say "OK guys, no tricks..just answer the questions and don't overthink them" so you would look at the question's BIZARRE wording and think "No she can't mean that, she said no tricks" and it turns out to be a trick. I don't think she MEANT to write trick questions but they just turned out to be. She wasn't very good at seeing things from the eyes of the student. And yeah she would seem very irritated if you came in with a question that she THINKS you should have known. However, let's compare her to your other option: Kobelsky. I would say Hurtt is miles and miles above and beyond the alternative, so try to take Hurtt. However, if it comes down to taking Hurtt and Baldwin or Dave Hurtt and Kobelsky, take the other section (since you have to take the same sections with paired teachers). Baldwin was awful and Kathy didn't quite make up for Baldwin's deficiency, relative to the other section. Ideally though, I would recommend the Kathy Hurtt and Abbe section. I was very upset by Kathy's exams, in the end, but the rest of the class was fine. I learned a lot in the database project and really enjoyed doing it. Hurtt was ten times more helpful to us than Kobelsky was to his students. She will be great to have on your side in the future and I definitely recommend taking her class (unless she is paired with Baldwin) over Kobelsky's. Both teachers didn't do a very good job of writing exams, but Kathy did a better job helping us with assignments and helping us at the end of the semester if we needed it.   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2010-12-16

Comments:3303 - Kathy Hurtt will hurt you! I hate this woman! Her class is poorly organized and heavy workload and not enough explanation. She always pretends to be nice and helpful, but when you ask her questions, she is irritable and agitated, very rude and mean. She needs to take a pill. I thought I was going to like her, but I can't stand her now. She thinks she knows everything and she is always right. I hate going to her class! Can't wait to finish her class.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2010-11-16

Comments:3303 - This class is not easy like I think everyone was expecting. The low precentage projects are easy just takes time to do them. The access project is a little harder because there is not much instruction. Go to as many of the extra help sessions as you can. The tests are okay, just study the notes/ handouts, read the readings in the book, and do the homework. I would advise to not get behind with everything because it is hard to learn it the night of the test!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-12-30

Comments:3303 - Well, you guys who just started the ACC core. This is the class to watch out for! Forget about the Intermediate Accounting clas (3301), that class is easy as long as you actually read the book. This class? The textbook is unusable. Everything that is being tested is every CONCEPTS coming out of the professor's mouth. Notice I said concepts, not words. It's like the class expects you to be an accountant already even though you just started the core. If you have a work background and know how documents flow in a company, you are in a good shape. If not, this is probably going to be a huge pain of the ashes of a class. Good luck y'all.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2009-12-21

Comments:3303 - She acts like she is so helpful, but when I finally went to her for help she wasn't at all. She gets aggitated and angry when you ask a question, like she is upset that we don't know the answer already. She expects you to know a lot without really teaching it. I thought I was going to like her, but by the end of the semester I couldn't stand her.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2009-11-04

Comments:ACC 3303 - I love Dr. Hurtt! Yes, this class is tough with some big projects, but if you pay attention and work hard you will learn so much! She is also very willing to help you along the way. I definitely recommend going into her office if you have questions about class or accounting in general - she's very friendly!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-01-22

Comments:3303 - I think AIS is the worst class in the acc core, but Dr. Hurtt does her best to make it bearable. I loved her as a teacher and she was always there if you needed her. The tests can be pretty hard, but the main thing is to do good on all of the projects. I would definately take her again!   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-12-18

Comments:ACC 3303 - I mean why is this required for our major? It's so useless. I guess K Hurtt is cool and I mean I can't fault her as a person (except for occassionally being incredibly rude when people ask questions). The tests are like this... Database Test (12% and unbelievably hard, I made a C+), Queries and Doc Test(Super easy, made an A), and Internal Controls (average, just memorize and barf it out on the test). I mean I would say she is lesser of two evils between her and Kobelsky but I don't think you "lose" either way. Really, this should be an elective though at best.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-11-15

Comments:ACC 3301 - AIS is a terrible class, but Dr. Hurtt makes it as tolerable as possible. She assigns some big projects, but she's really helpful and ALWAYS in the lab to answer any questions and help you work through it. She's a really nice person and a great person to go to for general advice etc. The class workload isn't bad day to day, there are just some big projects. You can bomb a few tests and make it up on the projects, she's really helpful on grades.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2008-11-14

Comments:3303 - I really liked Dr. Hurtt. I started thinking I was really going to not like this class but it ended up being my favorite for the semester. Even if your not too good at test taking, you can make it up on projects. She is a very kind person, and a good teacher. She seems to love accounting. I would recommend her to friends.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2008-01-10

Comments:5331 - Dr. Hurtt is passionate about teaching fraud. It's a fun class and doesn't get boring. However, there is a lot of big projects and no tests. If you don't plan on working too hard during the summer, do not take this class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-07-11

Comments:3303 - I wouldn't say that the workload is horrible... I mean besides the projects, but there's no way out of those. Besides that, she is not the nicest lady. If you ask a question, be prepared for her to laugh at you or get frustrated. I wasn't extremely impressed by her teaching, and I can't say that I learned a whole lot.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2007-03-29

Comments:3303 - She is a good teacher and very helpful. I would reccommend taking her.  - Grade In Class:C

Date: 2005-12-26

Comments:3303 - I think she has improved in organization since the last person posted. This class is a lot of work. Unless you are a computer nerd (maybe even then) you won't like it. But Dr. Hurtt will tell you that on the first day. However, once you are finished with it you will realize that you have actually learned a lot of important stuff. It's painful but it's worth it. You only have two choices for this class, Hurtt or Kobelsky. They teach the class together so it doesn't matter which one you take. Dr. Hurtt is really cool and will bend over backwards to help you but she's also pretty intimidating towards the beginning of the semester.   - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2005-12-11

Comments:ACC - 4. Much of the material was subjective in nature. This created issues with grading, and most of the tests were not graded in a timely fashion. Before the final the class was still not aware of what their grades were or what they needed to make on the final. 5. At least two of the major tests were poorly produced. They either did not give good instruction or they introduced new ideas that had never been covered in class. Strengths 1. Her daily evaluations give an outlet to ask questions, and she does cover those at the beginning of every class. 2. She is not a boring lecturer, and as long as she knows the material does well with it. 3. She makes good use of class time, and provides both PowerPoint and chalk board examples.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2005-01-10

Comments:ACC - Problems areas 1. She required a specialized Baylor edition of textbook. The book was very poorly printed, and she corrected it numerous times throughout the semester. Then the bookstore would not even buy the junk textbook back. 2. She was poorly organized. On numerous occasions she taught the material, and then had to correct herself in the following class period. The PowerPoint slides were not even correct. 3. The projects were huge wastes of time. Very little instruction was provided, which resulted in inordinate amounts of time being spent on this classes material. Some of the projects were grade weighted to low for the amount of time they consumed. In the end you will find yourself just trying to plow through them to get them done, and therefore learning very little.  - Grade In Class:B+
