Comments:AST 4388 (ch soc/cul) - Good prof and very helpful. Lots of discussion (most classes are just discussion-based and participation is graded). Lots of reading, too. Short answer reading quizzes before most classes (online on Canvas). You have to facilitate two discussions during the semester, do like 5 discussion posts, write a 10-12 page term paper on any topic related to the course (he has deadlines for prospectus, outline, etc.) and if you write 2 pages per week you'll get that amount of points extra credit (up to 10). He's a pretty chill grader, though. Midterm and final are multiple choice, short answer, and essay questions which isn't fun but a lot of the questions are the same as the quizzes and he tells you essay prompts beforehand. If you prep you'll do fine. The course topics are actually really interesting. The first half is history and economic stuff which may be boring but second half goes into specific topics like technology, youth, environment, etc. If you have no background in Asian studies or international relations, things might be confusing at first but you'll be fine by the end.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301lab - This man knows how to teach. His lab is really engaging and makes things easy to understand. The workload is bearable, and his assignments are different practices and presentations, video projects. He is very encouraging and always willing to answer questions. Overall, one of the best professors at Baylor! Too bad, BBA only requires one semester of foreign languages. Otherwise I will continue with him.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1324 - THIS MAN IS AMAZING. He is so helpful in class. Truly, I learned a lot because of Dr. Wang. He is extremely kind and respectful. 100% recommend. Work was super doable. Quizzes and tests are exactly what he tells you to study, completely fair.  - Grade In Class:B+

- Grade In Class:A

Comments:4301 - It's a summer class. I had to retake this class after receiving an F from Yang's 4301 class. Wang laoshi's class is really the best. The class is online. We read five Chinese novels. all of them are great. I have never read five books in one summer. But I learned a lot. @e had online discussions. He answered my questions very quickly. He graded my papers very quickly too. And he is really a nice person.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1301 - wang laoshi is excellent!! Unfortunately he teaches only one Chinese class each year. I would love to take the next level with him. He is engaging and makes things easy to understand and follow. He is so encouraging and always willing to answer questions. Overall, one of the best professors at Baylor!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - I really enjoyed being in 王老师's class. It was very structured and I always knew what was being expected of me. This was probably one of my harder classes this semester. Don't think that you can pass this class without studying. You have to work for your grade. The quizzes and tests aren't difficult if you've studied. Though this class was difficult, I enjoyed coming every single day.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHI1401 - Dr. Wang is very knowledgable of China. His class can never be dull. His quizzes were written but all had the same format so you could anticipate what would be on them. He cares about students and is eager to help anyone. I would recommend him to anyone who is serious about mastering the Chinese language and enjoys intellectually stimulating topics.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - I've never been so happy to get a A- in my life. Wang laoshi is by FAR the best professor I have ever had. This has been the most rewarding class I have ever taken, and while extremely stressful at times, I would not hesitate to take it over again with him. He made speak in Chinese. He's so intelligent, knowledgeable and humorous. I would recommend him to anyone. The class is difficult, I am not going to lie about it, but it's completely worth it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - Wang is not terrible, but not great, and after taking both I would recommend Shi over him. He is unorganized, unpredictable, and honestly his class stressed me out more than anything else, especially taking him my first semester of college ever...lol, bad idea. That being said, though, I did learn, not only Chinese but how to work hard. I didn't really enjoy the class though and almost considered switching out of Chinese completely. You have to take this all in consideration with the fact that I had absolutely zero experience in Chinese beforehand though, unlike literally every other person in my class...lol second bad idea of mine. So if you have more experience, he's probably not that bad, but if you're more like me, I would really recommend Shi laoshi over him :/  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:1401 - Wang Laoshi is AWESOME!! I absolutely loved his class. He holds students to a high standard and if you want to learn Chinese - you will definitely learn. I am disappointed he doesn't teach CHI 1402, because I would definitely take him again. He has cultural Fridays - which usually are based around YouTube videos. He is very intelligent, well-read, and insightful on global issues. He also teaches in the BIC, and having had him in this class, I would definitely take his World Cultures course. If you have never taken Chinese before, it will be challenging. I had previous Chinese experience, as well as several others in the course. He calls on EVERY person in class to practice pronunciation and tones, so be prepared every class. You are expected to learn Characters on your own since he doesn't spend much time on them in class. Make sure you download apps for stroke order or use online resources in addition to the textbook. All in all, you will learn and won't be disappointed.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - Wang laoshi is incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic and encouraging about the subject matter. He is extremely caring about students. He makes the class engaging while being challenging and dealing with a lot of materials and cultural subjects. He calls on everyone in class. His class is consistently the highlight of my day. Every project is graded on Canvas, very transparent. Don't assume you can make an A in his class. You have to work extremely hard to earn it.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - We just finished our 1401 class today. Wang laoshi has been great. Love cultural Fridays and music videos he showed. I am going to miss the class and wang laoshi.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - Professor Wang has a serious favoritism issue. Many times he would call out members of the class for not understanding and has made multiple students cry when calling them out. His course load is, for the most part, understandable, and once you get the hang of studying the characters you will manage to squeeze out a B in the class like I did. But he truly favors students who understand the language better to start off. Wang spends way too little time time teaching how, and when to use spoken Chinese and will grade you lower just because he thinks "you aren't trying" even though everyone in the class has more expierience. I went in with no experience and often times found myself being called out for misunderstanding something. If you have the opportunity take Professor Holly Shi instead.  - Grade In Class:B

Comments:CHI 1401 - Professor Wang is a nice and funny man, but I was discouraged by his teaching style. Coming into the class with no prior experience with the language, it was disheartening when he picked favorites (native speakers and experienced speakers). The class moves VERY fast, that's sort of his style. High-energy class, but I wasn't inspired because I constantly felt as though we were moving too fast for me to truly learn the new vocabulary and really get it down. Language builds, and I would've liked to spend more time on each unit. I visited his office multiple times a week, half of the time he's not there when he says he's going to be. Tutors are difficult to get ahold of. Overall intimidating experience--I did not choose to continue to pursue learning Mandarin.  - Grade In Class:C

Comments:1401 - Luckily, I was very motivated for my first semester of Chinese, because Professor Wang expects much from his students. Looking back on the experience almost a year later, a Chinese learner should take Wang. His tests are fair, his quizzes are difficult, and he won’t make it easy on you grade-wise. Dr. Wang did bounce me form a B+ to an A, though, which was a great surprise. My advice would be not to care about the grade. What matters is that you ACTUALLY LEARN a lot of Chinese! Wang takes you from ground zero to and increases your Chinese level to a higher place. He explains things very well. If you practice a lot (spoken and written) you’ll do well. Wang is easily the best professor for Chinese. 你的中文水平应该提高得很快!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2320 - I am in Yang's 3301 class right now. It's a joke. Learning nothing. I miss Wang's class. I feel like I learned more in wang's class than my five semesters Chinese together. Lots of speaking and writing for Wang's class.I learned a great deal from him. If you would rather put in very little work and hope to get a good grade instead of learning something, this is not the class for you. For those who enjoy learning, this is the class for you. I would definitely take him again. He does not tolerate laziness well.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:CHI 1401 - i loved having this class at the end of the day everyday. he is always so positive and extremely interactive. you really do learn language the way you're supposed to. he is very passionate about his subject and cares that you learn, so he'll make you practice practice! all you have to do for hw is weekly workbook and, as for studying, you just gotta practice practice practice, and you'll do well :)  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:2310 Baylor in China - Just came back from the Baylor in China trip. LOVED it. Everything was so awesome. I had so much fun. The Shanghai World Expo was fabulous. Wang Laoshi was terrific. He's always classy, staying at classy five-star hotels, paying for expensive dinners at fancy restaurants, and taking us to amazing shows. I miss China! Some of the kids would never ever even have an opportunity to visit these places. Wang Laoshi was charming and witty, but blunt and cynical. You had to learn how to handle his sarcasm and bluntness. Poor Wang Laoshi, I dont know how he could even put up with us crazy Americans. BTW, we were known as Canadians while we were in China. Anyway, by the end of the trip everyone was basically fed up with each other.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401/1402 - BEST professor on campus. he's a lovable, caring guy. yeah he is serious about what he teaches and strives his students to do well. but hey, we're here for an education arent we? almost like a father figure. love the guy as a professor, mentor, and friend.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:CHI1402 - I love Dr. Wang. He is the best Chinese teacher at Baylor. He knows how to teach a difficult language and makes sure that you really understand. I have learned so much from his class. Ark, your comment is not fair to Dr. Wang and doesn't do justice to his teaching. You are a native speaker of the language. You just wanted an easy A and he whipped your butt. Suck it up Ark! Honestly he is an awesome professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1402 - Going into second semester chinese, I heard Wang laoshi was "awesome" and super cool, the best teacher ever, but I honestly have to say thats not the case for my class. We started out with 20 people and within the first couple days 8 dropped, and he made one girl cry. it was not pretty at all. dont get me wrong hes a great professor, i learned so much chinese from him but he scares the carp out of me. so many of us dread going to class because basically he just yells at you if you dont know it and cuts you down constantly. hes always telling us we are going to fail etc..the class is possible, but dont think its going to be an easy a, he takes attending class very seroiusly..dont EVER get on his bad side..once on the dark side always on the dark side. i think he does play favorites sometimes. he can be a pretty cool guy, but if i had the choice, i dont think i would take him again just because he honestly made me dread going to class everyday.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:1401 - This is the most amazing teacher ever ! He has a very good sense of humor, answers to all your questions willingly and his definitely dying to help you doing well. What's more the beginner Chinese class is very interesting in itself...Go for it !  - Grade In Class:A
