Comments:3304 - The workload for this course is manageable but professor Hamerly will expect you to give 110% effort on everything. Every single point has to earned including participation points. She is an amazing professor though and cares a lot about her class. Learning is fun with professor Hamerly and I think that everyone should try to take a class from her if they can.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3304 - Although I got an A in this class I had to fight for every point. The participation grades are like to two decimal points (ex: 9.32/10) and I think that's over the top. I have no clue why all these reviews are glazing her so hard, yes an A is attainable if you do all the assignments, but you really have to fight for points on the graded writing. Just be prepared to give your all for every assignment/test/raising your hand in class. She treats her class like middle schoolers which I find a little demeaning as well.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:PSC 4434; 3304; 3374 - Dr. Hamerly is the PSC GOAT and anyone telling you otherwise is either lying or does not want to succeed. She is incredibly organized, offers amazing feedback, and will mentor you if you want to pursue further research or conference avenues. She has set me on the path I am going today. TAKE HER!!!  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3304 - If you need to take comparative politics, TAKE DR HAMERLY. If you are type A like me, you will thrive in this class. She is so incredibly organized and you can expect the same thing from the class each week. This makes it extremely easy to do well. Come to class, participate, and do the worksheets she give out and you will make an A. She also has premade quizlets for each chapter test as well as the final. Dr. Hamerly is such a sweet professor, I highly recommend taking her. There is a decent amount of homework during the week, but it is the same amount every week. So, once you get the hang of it and know what to expect it goes pretty fast. I was told to not even take COMP unless it was with Dr. Hamerly and that was the best advice I have ever recived.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3302 - Professor Hammerly is super nice and helpful for this class. At first the class seems a little daunting but Dr. Hammerly takes time to grade your work and give you meaningful and important comments. There is a decent amount of homework for this class but it all helps you build your understanding for the tests. It may seem like its a little pointless but I promise at the end of the semester it all makes so much sense. She kinda throws you out of the nest for you to learn and understand but you will catch on so quick. Every week you have 1 perusall, 1 textbook chapter, 1 quiz, and 1 assignment. She has open expectations of her students and what you put in you will get out. She does not try and trip her students up but she really tells you what she is looking for and her grading scale for everything is posted under her canvas assignements. I would highly recommend Hammerly for Comparative because you will learn so much about international politics. I love this class and this professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:3304 - Dr.Hamerly is very organized and clear with her expectations of you as a student. This is by no means an easy class but the work is not difficult and if you do it all you will end up with a good grade in the class. Work for the class consisted of weekly readings on perusall, short answer application exercises, and a short multiple choice quizs that are open note.  - Grade In Class:B+

Comments:3304 - Best choice for comparative politics!! She is a great professor, and is super understanding. She gives opportunities to resubmit assignments for better scores, and she is overall just a sweet lady. Highly recommend!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2023-04-14

Comments:Comp Gov - her lower score is only for people that don't want to do work. this women made me fall in love with political science and i learned things that will impact my future at baylor and more importantly stuff that i will actually use in a career field. weekly assignment really help you understand the materlal, she makes study quizlets for every unit and each exam. really cares about her students. weekly participation is important but not hard, she loves hearing ideas and covers for you even with less competent answers. late work accepted up until the last week of school!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2022-05-11

Comments:3304 - She is the Director of the International Studies department, so she is extremely knowledgeable. Her course is structured incredibly well. For MWFs, Monday was lecture day, Wednesday was applying the lecture with exercises, and Friday was discussion day. Homework was due Wednesdays and it consisted of a quiz, an application exercise, and a reading or two using Perusall. Overall, the course is challenging, but I learned a lot.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2022-05-08

Comments:3304 - Her comparative politics course is incredibly organized and easy to navigate. Additionally, she is always willing to answer questions and encourages questions in her meetings. If you see her course available, definitely consider taking it. The course is reading heavy, but if you have an interest in politics, then you will undoubtedly find them interesting.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2021-04-28

Comments:3304 - Dr. Hamerly is by far the best choice for comparative politics. She is an extremely fair grader and she let us turn in assignments late. Her workload is also pretty light. She is also very nice and understanding. She is incredibly brilliant and her class was very organized, which I loved. I have no clue why her ratings on here are so low. If you get anything less than a B in this class, then you definitely just slacked off and didn't do anything. I've done the minimum and I have a good grade in this class. Take her!  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2021-04-20

Comments:3304 - Dr. Hamerly is a GEM! She's so sweet and cares so much about her students and their understanding of the material. Comp gets a bad rap for being hard, and while it is more difficult than Constitution or Western Political Philosophy, it's entirely doable - especially with Hamerly. Her lectures are a blast, she essentially tells stories and draws diagrams the entire time; very easy to follow. Her assignments are challenging but fair, and she gives tons of instruction and feedback to help you do well. She even has made Quizlets for her own tests, and gives them to us along with study guides and extensive FAQs, so you always know what you're expected to do. She's extremely available for her students, and is willing to meet for help with essays, tests, etc. The TQCs can get tedious, but it's essentially you answering questions about the readings assigned - if you try you'll get a good grade, they're easy if you keep up with them, and really come in handy for tests and essays. I hope I'll be able to take more courses with Hamerly, she's definitely your best choice for Comp!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2020-04-14

Comments:3304 - I took Hamerly for comparative politics. The topics were interesting, and I learned some interesting factoids, but gained virtually no useful skills. Her TQC journals are obnoxious, and she often had TAs grading them, who looked for word-for-word responses. Her highly inflexible way of running her class and grading made the class incredibly frustrating by the end. She has this way of holding class discussions after lectures where she allows students to disagree with one another without allowing them to talk directly to each other. Essentially all interesting discussions were neutered by her refusal to allow students to delve deeper than one layer down into any ideas. If you can put up with this and keep up with TQCs (and figure out the TA's grading preferences) then the class isn't too tough. IMO the only reason to take this class is because it's mandatory for a PSC major/minor.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2019-03-31

Comments:3304 - Dr. Hamerly is really nice and brilliant. However, she wasn't the most effective lecturer. Her lectures weren't very cohesive and were hard to follow. She requires a TQC journal which either you hate it or you love it. I loved her tests because she provided a quizlet online. Basically, study the quizlet and you can make a 100 on the multiple choice questions. Her essay questions are hard because they usually include material that she either didn't teach or literally half the class doesn't understand the question. Overall she wasn't too bad. She loves to talk about Sweden or Mongolia.  - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2018-06-06

Comments:PSC 3304 - Dr. Hamerly knows her stuff and does her best to make class discussions interesting and relevant. For the love of God, DO NOT GET BEHIND ON YOUR TQC NOTEBOOK. It is the easiest way to get an A in the class. The tests are 50 multiple choice questions over vocabulary from the textbook, thesis statements from the TQC readings, and general topics that are covered in class. She has already made Quizlets for all 3 of the exams for the vocab. Great professor, great class... if you put in minimal effort.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-12-08

Comments:Comp Pol - Dr. Hamerly is an excellent professor. She knows her stuff very well and her interest in comparative politics is evident in her teaching. She is a very effective lecturer and makes sure you know everything that will be on the test. As long as you keep up with the daily readings and TQC entries, you should do well in her class. She is a very fair and reasonable grader and a really nice person overall. I would definitely take her again if I could.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-12-02

Comments:3304 comp pols - Workload is what you'd expect from a 3000 level psc course: 10pg research paper, daily article readings around 10-20 pages, article entries. If you study for exams, they will be easy. She has extensive knowledge on her subject and can therefore incorporate information into the lectures and classes that make it interesting and worthwhile beyond textbook reading.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2016-01-10

Comments:Comp Pol - Was one of the the best profs I've had at Baylor. She is extremely interesting and knows her stuff REALLY well. She really does care about her students, and tries to get to know you on a personal basis. Her tests aren't hard as long as you study the cases and listen to the lectures.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2015-07-22

Comments:Comparative Politics - Dr. Hamerly has an extremely effective lecture style and uses really great examples that are actually really interesting and usually pretty random. This class isn't necessarily a cakewalk, but it's relatively easy. TQC journals are worth 25% of your total grade, and are pretty much graded on completion, so if you keep up with them that's an easy 100% of 1/4 of your grade. The articles that you write the TQC's on are a bit boring at times, but there are a few gems, and if you read them (or at least skim) they'll be helpful for discussion and the tests! The midterm and final are very simple and straightforward. It's one short essay, a matching section, and MC section. The midterm and final are both worth 20%. For the essay she gives you 6 prompts before the test and you prepare 4 of them, 3 are given as options on the test. You write 1 essay that should be 1 page handwritten. She has created a quizlet for both tests to study for the matching. I just reread my TQC journals to study for the MC portion of the test and got an A. The research paper is graded from a rubric and she gives you prompts or you can choose another topic if you clear it with her, it's 8-10 pages and worth 25% of your grade. The last 10% of your grade is weekly participation, if you show up and pay attention you will get at least an 8, talk once a day and you're at a 9-10 for the week. If you do the bare minimum of studying, turning things in on time, and showing up for class you should not get a bad grade. This actually turned out to be my favorite PSC class I've taken because Dr. Hamerly is such an effective and organized lecturer.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:Comparative Politics - Reading some of the reviews from 2005 were pretty amusing, either she was a lot worse back then and has significantly improved, or they're exaggerated. Dr. Hamerly was a tough professor in the sense that she handed out a lot of busy work and the class was honestly pretty boring however I found most of her handouts to be fairly helpful. I second the comment, "KEEP UP WITH THE TQC JOURNAL" because life will probably be a lot easier and I would've received a better grade. The research paper for me was a grade booster and she didn't grade hard at all on the TQC notebooks. The essay sections on the test killed me both times and since there was such a large term bank to memorize for the final, it was kind of annoying. Overall, I would say look to a different prof if available for a comparative politics course, but if you have to take this specific course with Dr. Hamerly, just study and keep up in class and you should be fine.  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2014-08-27

Comments:Comparative Politics - Hamerly really enjoys comparative politics, but this class could be much more interesting. The majority of your work will be reading scholarly articles before each class. These can turn into busy work. Most of them are not very interesting and their conclusions are predictable. Tests and research paper are super easy.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2014-03-04

Comments:Comparative Politics - Fantastic professor. She's traveled all over Europe and has a ton of knowledge about different countries all over the world. She's more than willing to go more in depth on a subject you find interesting, and if you ask a question she doesn't know off the top of her head, she's great at getting back to you. You can tell she's very passionate about what she does and it makes an impact on the way the course is taught. As far as grades are concerned, she has a midterm, a final, one paper, journal entries, and points for participation. My advice to anyone looking to take this course, KEEP UP WITH THE TQC JOURNAL. It's an extremely valuable resource on both tests and the paper, and being able to cite scholarly political science papers will help you in classes to come. This class wasn't horribly difficult, as she gives you ample time to prepare for the paper and tests (and even has a Quizlet set for the midterm and final vocab), but it does take some work. Also, participate in class at least a little bit each class. Participation grades will impact your final grade a bit and she doesn't give the points lightly. All in all, I'm very happy I decided to take this class and wouldn't hesitate to take another class with Dr. Hamerly.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2013-12-25

Comments:PSC 3304 - Dr. Hamerly is an incredible professor. This class is not an easy, blow off course, but its definitely doable. There are daily readings and summaries, but they are manageable and very helpful for the tests. I loved her teaching style and I think she grades very fairly. Not an easy A, but I strongly recommend it.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2013-08-29

Comments:PSC4354 - Hamerly is an excellent professor. She takes political science - which I often find boring/monotonous - and presents it passionately in an interesting way. She often used media like NPR and NYT in class, both as stories we watched/heard and some that we read. I really think she is one of the best professors in the department. Take her!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-12-25

Comments:3304 - I thought Hamerly was great. There were a lot of people in my class that had taken her before, so that was encouraging to learn on my first day. She has interesting stories and a surprisingly funny sense of humor. There are a lot of readings and you have to make entries for each one in your "TQC" notebook, but they're not horrible assignments and the notebook is a priceless study-aid when it comes time to prep for the mid-term and final. These were the only tests in the class and they were very fair. There were two papers, but we didn't have to write the second one if we were happy with the grade from the first essay. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Hamerly as a professor.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2012-05-21

Comments:3304 - I learned a lot from Dr. Hamerly. She is really good at what she does. She takes her classes very seriously however... this is no blow off class. There are a lot of readings you must do and write about them in a notebook that she randomly collects. They aren't too terrible. Do the readings and the notebook...it is an easy grade but also a huge component of your final grade. Plus, lectures as well as exams center around the readings so there's simply no way around it. Exams are fill in the blank definitions from the textbook, essays, and multiple choice on the readings. Exams are pretty easy if you put in a few hours of solid studying. There are two research papers that will really boost your grade IF you write well. Cite your sources as specifically and as much as possible...you can't cite too much in this class. The worst part is the "participation" grade. She will deduct points if you don't VERBALLY contribute to class discussion...even if you show up to class everyday and pay attention. Shy people beware. She offers some easy extra credit. She's usually in her office if you need her. I had to work for my A in this class, but I would definitely recommend her. And don't be late or otherwise face a public scolding...  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-12-12

Comments:International Orgs - I loved having Dr. Hamerly as a professor. She is very knowledgeable. The first part of the class was particularly boring for me because it was all theory, but after that half the class was really interesting. There is a 20 page paper, but it is not bad. If you choose a topic that is interesting it is fine(you can write about anything as long as it pertains to IOs in some way). My best advice is try to say at least one thing in class each day, there is a participation grade and don't miss class. There is a good bit of reading, but skimming for the main points was enough for me.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2011-05-19

Comments:3324, 4354 - Hamerly is simply wonderful. She's always available in her office if you need help, and if not, she's usually quick to respond via e-mail. She's spent a lot of time in Europe and you can tell by all her interesting stories about how things work over there. If you love European politics, take her! She's one of the nicest profs at Baylor. The workload is pretty hard, but she grades fairly easy if you do the work. She's pretty clear about what her expectations are in the syllabus. Tests aren't too bad if you study for them beforehand. 4354's were take-home exams that were a little tricky, but they were also open-note. It helps to read the readings before sitting down to take a take-home exam.   - Grade In Class:B+

Date: 2011-01-10

Comments:International Orgs - Dr. Hamerly is a really good prof. She is very good at teaching material to the class, however, her IO class does have a pretty good work load. There are is a take home essay midterm and final, a pretty good sized reseach paper over an IO of your choice (20+ pgs), and a PCQ note book which seems a little useless at first, but is very helpful with midterm and final....DO IT, it's an easy grade also. Oh and there is a little poster presentation over your paper, but its fun and doesn't require nearly the amount of prep time that other presentations do. Overall, its a really interesting class with a really good prof who makes the class fun (We got to read about IR theory and how it relates to a zombie apocalypse!), decent work load, but it shouldn't deter you from taking her class.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-12-12

Comments:comparative politics - Dr. Hamerly is very fair, but she is very nice and understanding. She teaches the reading, but the discussions can get interesting and she presents it well. We had a few tests that were easy if you studied enough, and two research papers that were harder. She gives pop quizzes but gives opportunities for extra credit to make up for quizzes or missed days. I would take her again.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-05-19

Comments:Comparative Govt - I wasn't too interested in this subject but I did learn a lot from Dr. Hamerly. You must do the rather boring reading because there are a few pop quizzes. Her tests are pretty easy, a lot of vocabulary and a couple essay questions. I had the most trouble with the 2 research papers. They're only 5-7 pages, but they're over pretty obscure topics and she grades them pretty hard. I worked pretty hard in this class and barely got an A.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2009-04-10

Comments:4354 - Dr. Hamerly is a very nice professor, and I've had her twice now. The reading for this class is a lot, and much of it is pretty dry, but the content of the class is somewhat interesting (not exactly what I expected though). If you're going into a career that needs to know a lot of detailed information about the inner workings of the European political process, this is the definitely the class for you. Random quizzes, a term paper, a midterm, and a final.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-12-21

Comments:4354, 4375, 3305 - I've had Hamerly for Comparative Govt, International Orgs and Govt/Politics of West Europe. Her classes are a lot of work, and the 4000 levels have a lot of reading, and 20 page papers due at the end of the semester. But you will learn A LOT. And as far as Dr. Hamerly goes, she is very approachable, she has really helped me out a lot this semester, and even let me turn in a final late because I had 3 on the same day. If you're a Political Science major or an IST major, you should take her. Be prepared to work, but it's worth it. Just make sure you do the readings before class because it's most discussion-based.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-12-10

Comments:PSC - Hamerly is brilliant and you learn so much from her classes. I have taken her for International Organizations and Comparative Politics and received A's in both classes. She expects a lot out of you but her tests are relatively easy and it is not difficult to get a good grade in her class. Definitely my favorite professor at Baylor because she is very approachable and knowledgeable about the subjects that she teaches.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2008-07-15

Comments:3304, 4375 - Ok, I've taken Hamerly twice and I have no idea what the previous people were complaining about. On the note to the idiot who complained about 300 pages - the only way you had 300 pages a week is if you were behind. I've taken both of the classes that she teaches and none of them had over 100 pages, if even that. Idiot. Her papers are a bit strict, but mostly because she has a "heirarchy of sources". Basically, if it's not a top notch source, it's useless. Here tests however, like everyone else said is cakewalk...if you attend class. The only reason I had a B was because I kept turning things in at the last minute...eh...  - Grade In Class:B

Date: 2008-02-18

Comments:3315 - Everybody complaining about Dr. Hamerly must be on crack. She is an extremely fair teacher, very by the book. Extremely easy cakewalk tests, but she does grade her papers a bit harshly. Hard not to make an A with the 6 points of extra she usually gives  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-05-10

Comments:3304 - Dr. Hamerly can appear pretty strict at times, but she's really a nice prof. Just don't talk while she's talking; common sense. Do the readings every night - sometimes they can be repetitive, especially because class lecture is a direct repeat of what's in the books - but if the class isn't participating she will pull out a quiz. Tests aren't bad, just do the terminology; papers aren't too bad either, just 2 5-7 pages each.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2007-05-09

Comments:PSC3324 - If I had a choice, I wouldn't retake Hamerly. The class is pretty cut and dry- test comes from notes and READING. Do the reading and the charts she gives you. The class is very boring, and I would just stare at my watch the entire time in agony, hating every minute. If you have a know-it-all in your class, she doesn't filter conversation but instead eggs them on to be a know-it-all. No tricks up her sleeve, grading wise, but be prepared to work hard for your A- her tests are very unmerciful.  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-12-11

Comments:PSC 3324 wrld pol. systms - She comes off as a little stiff at first, but once she gets going, she's actually very funny! I think that she's got great teaching methods, and I have learned SO much from taking her class. She quizzes over The Economist (magazine) every week, but they actually help your grade a lot! Her attendance policy is pretty rigorous too, but as long as you show up her lectures are good. She shows a lot of films to supplement the text. I study pretty hard for her tests, but I usually do well. Overall, I would highly recommend taking Hamerly...it's worth the work.  - Grade In Class:A

Comments:comp gov - Dude, she's a grrat teacher, are you guys smoking some crack? Yeah, her tests are easy, and this is a 3000 level course, that's a major plus. No, it's not the most interesting course ever, you should be able to pull off an A if you read the glossary, so quit complaining. And her teahing ability is fine  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-05-08

Comments:comp. gov. - All of these comments are very unfair! Professor Hamerly's class is SO easy. The tests are easy, the papers are easy, and she is very nice. All she wants is respect. The class reminds me of junior--all you have to do is learn definitions for her tests. She is very helpful. Her attendance policy may be a little strict, but she offers extra credit to make up for missed days. I like her!  - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-03-29

Comments:PSC: 3324 - This class sucked so much. I hate taking pointless classes and this one was up there. She knows absolutley nothing about other countries unless it is Germany. She had to have several students help (including myself) just to get through certain sections. Every time I went into her class I felt like I was back in High School the way she yelled at us and got upset. The reading is decent about a chapter a week plus acouple novels. But the class is just boring and her tests aren't that amazing either. There are also 2 papers, all you need to do is get alot of reputable sources and spell check your work. She will love you for it.   - Grade In Class:A

Date: 2006-01-05

Comments:4375 & 3324 - This Ph.D. candidate is a miserable wench. DO NOT TAKE HER COURSES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! If her tests and papers don't kill you, the amount of reading will. You will have to read approximately 300 pages per week while producing 10-20 page papers and taking impossible exams. If you ask about her possibly decreasing the workload, she will get so mad that she shakes and tell you that you knew what you were getting into when she handed out the syllabus. RUN, don't walk, to your nearest computer and drop out of her classes!! If you have to take her courses in order to graduate like I did, spend plenty of time on your knees worshipping God/Allah/Muhammad/Moses/Whoever and maybe you will pass. Peace be with you.  - Grade In Class:C+

Date: 2005-12-01

Comments:3324 - This teacher is freakin' RIDONKULOUS!!!!! RUN like the East from the West!!!!! She is awful. She knows absolutely nothing unless it deals with Germany, and that's only two weeks of the class. Her 200 question test had to be condensed to 50 and it was still impossible. take her only if you want to write huge papers over untaught material. Students have even complained to the Dean over her. Run Run Run she is awful. She's bitter at the world and will argue a source from the CIA stating they are innacurate and would rather believe an indigent from the street who is not worthy of being a source. May God Himself be with you if you take her.  - Grade In Class:D
