Comments:4340 - take. her. for this course there were zero quizzes and zero homework and based on one big group final project, one mid term, a final exam, and a small mid semester 5 minute presentation. she is genuinely passionate about her field of study and has so much experience that she is willing to share with her class. i had a very personal and deep conversation with her where we both ended teary eyed and hugged at the end of our conversation. she is one of the few baylor professors who i feel comfortable talking about anything with. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:4341 - Cross Cultural Communication. This class is easy and a lot of the tests are common sense. Don't buy the book, instead just take really good notes during lecture. You will have two big group projects, if you have a terrible group then you will not do well in this class. Dr. Doyle is an amazing lecturer and I look forward to taking more of her classes in the future. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:4341 - Dr. Doyal's Cross-Culture class seemed exciting at first, but as it went on, I began to loathe it. We met once a week, for almost three hours, for fifteen classes. Main topics focused on different culture's views on medicine, their health disparities, communication problems that could arise, natural remedies cultures have, and how white people are oppressive... no, I assure you that you read that right. Towards the end, I lost all care for this class. While Doyal herself never said anything of the sort, the mandatory movie "I'm Not Racist... Am I?" and her guest speaker made it quite apparent that some blacks truly believe that "oppressive white culture" is to blame for majority of their problems in life. Because of my own personal experiences in life, I can understand and sympathize on some minor level. Discrimination will likely always exist, and it's apparent that a strong portion of blacks have been deeply affected by it in the harsh south... but to blame all white people? Some flawed logic there. NEWS FLASH: everyone is subject to some form of discrimination by some person at some point in their life. Be it by age, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, social class, political/religious views, et cetera. It's human nature to discriminate, it's how our primitive ancestors evaluated potential threats and formed tribes. Life is anything but fair and the world will definitely throw some hurtful people your way in life. All we can do is teach our children to do better and to DEAL WITH IT. Sorry, rant over. Now, back onto the main course. There are two tests, a Show-n-Tell, and a group project paper with a PowerPoint presentation. Tests came with a study guide, but were still moderately difficult and could trick you; so, definitely study and read the questions very carefully. The Show-n-Tell consisted of students gathering materials to make alternative medicine and presenting those items while explaining the supposed remedies and healing properties that these items can have. The project consisted of finding a "health" related business or service provider (such as the YMCA, CareNet, etc.), interviewing a supervisor there, and discovering where they lay on a Cultural Competence scale... of course providing detailed information proving why your group believes that they're at that point on the scale. My biggest advice? ATTENDANCE IS A HUGE PART OF YOUR GRADE AND YOU CAN LOSE POINTS ON THE PROJECTS SIMPLY BY BEING ABSENT ON THE WRONG DAY, EVEN IF NOTHING IS DUE. I was knocked down a whole letter grade by being absent twice out of the fifteen class lectures and was definitely taken off guard by this, so do yourself a favor and attend as much as you can. Beyond this, the subject was interesting overall. You'll definitely learn about different perspectives cultures have on American society and how to avoid potential conflicts/misunderstandings while working with different ethnicities. With that being said, the lectures were boring and definitely made three hours seem like six hours. Download the slides as soon as she posts them and make minor notes whenever she tips you off a potential question. She mainly just reads off the slides, and most of the study guide questions can be found online, but this doesn't guarantee an A on her tests! Pay close attention to avoid making mistakes! Doyal was only available via appointment only, but I never really had any concerns, minus the few absences I had. She was always kind and understanding to any concerns students had, but don't be fooled. Her grading on projects can definitely take you off guard and easily make an A impossible due to the few grades she actually takes in the class. Take my advice for whatever you think it's worth and power through! - Grade In Class:C
Comments:HED 2331 - Doyle's Health Concepts and Competencies class is pretty straightforward. You do have to study for the exams, but for most questions you don't know the answer to you can deduce the correct answer through simplistic process of elimination. The grade that kept me from an A or high B was the project, which she grades unfairly for in my opinion. If your profession has little to do with educating patients, prepare for a lousy project grade. Still, Doyle is a really nice teacher and wants her students to learn and succeed. Don't worry about her class being hard at all. - Grade In Class:B
Comments:1145 - This is the easiest class ever. Dr. Doyle is really nice and really helpful, and there is almost no work involved. Basically, show up for class and its an easy 100. Tests were easy...common sense really. Very easy project that was basically a binder. Take Doyle. - Grade In Class:A
Comments:HED 1145 - Very sweet lady and is very helpfull. is wiling to help you when you ask. - Grade In Class:B+
Comments:1145 - Great teacher! Willing to help with anything you need. Teaches multiple subjects; you should NOT leave Baylor without taking Dr. Doyle. In health all you have to do is a project that consists of keeping a binder. She's always in a good mood and very eager to help. Good Luck.. Oh, only 2 tests for health; mid term and final. - Grade In Class:B
